Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Will have to raise the salary to get the bald guy from Dubuque.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

That's so believable. Gwoz had a higher base at DU than Timmay, had far more ancillary income at DU than Timmay, and reportedly wanted more money. If you're trying to start a stupid rumor, go ahead. If you'd like to start one that will get some traction, you'll have to try a lot harder.
So you're saying your team shouldn't pay for a two time national champion coach? Gwoz is the best coach out there and a program like Maine deserves one like him. Of course from what I've gathered from the internets Maine wants to get someone with Maine ties. Which makes me now think Gwoz isn't that likely.

Not starting any rumor here.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Maine has always gone "outside" for a Coach unless they Coached there previously, so Gwozdeckey is a great fit, however, I would like to see Bavis get a shot. Things went south for Tim when Standbrook retired.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Whether they should or shouldn't is a moot point, B. They won't. And I'm not convinced that he would do better than some of the other names being bandied about. And I know you weren't trying to start a rumor. ;)

bu3: this is really the first chance that Maine has had to hire from within - it's a young program in a lot of ways. And Grant didn't really retire, he left with Timmay's bootprints on his back.

.......Why make such a brash move when you can let Whitehead go no strings attached in a year if you don't have someone like Gwoz in the pipeline? .........

The premise is that firing the coach will now sell out Alfond Arena more than compensating for the "buyout". It will be interesting to see if all of those empty seats in the middle of the ice will be filled this year. Many of them require a large contribution of money each year in addition to the season ticket price.

Hiring someone with Maine ties could be the wrong approach. Remember Cindy Blodgett?

True, but alot of people that gave up those donation seats said they would only come back when TW was gone, granted you won't get them all back or all filled but I would bet that Attendence will pick up just from this Announcement today....either thru regular season ticket sales/donation seat sales and single game sales....that is when tickets sales begin later this summer.

We will see if these people put their money where there mouth is. I do think attendance will be up, if only to check out the new coach.

Cindy didn't have any head-coaching experience, and precious little as an assistant, without a whole lot to show for it. At least the three names being bandied about have head coaching experience, and have been successful at it. .

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Dont want no stinkin 59 year old Gwoz
Dont want no angry Jack
Dont want no Blodget look alike

Just want a young, proven winner and a leader. And we know where to find him. ;)
