We actually have coyotes out where I live (it's very rural). We hear them at night. I've heard they are frequently rabid, but I don't know if that's true. Oddly I have never seen one as roadkill, and we get A LOT of roadkill of all different kinds. Maybe they get enough prey up in the wooded hills that they don't need to come down to the areas with roads.

MD Gov has now declared a State of Emergency. The head of the MD National Guard is the first black woman to hold the post; she was installed only a few weeks ago.

From looking at the pattern of the looting, this appears to be a methodical store-to-store operation, concentrating on Mom and Pop stores. One interview with one of the initial protesters had the man suggesting that the people doing the looting were not part of the protest.

Baltimore 4 NBC now has eyes-on confirmation that one hose was cut. They agree it was deliberate -- it was done as the hose was being deployed to put out a fire.

There are surreal "drive by" looters, who are jumping out of the car, grabbing stuff, then jumping back in and going down the street to the next place, like trick or treat. There doesn't appear to be any in-crowd violence.

Also: that crowd looks REALLY young. The station has reported that older Nation of Islam adults (there is a pretty big presence in this part of Baltimore) have been trying to stop the violence but the kids aren't listening. The Gray family has been pleading for a purely peaceful protest and are apparently very unhappy.

Census data: average income of the area where the protest began is about 30k average age late-30s, about half married, while at the area of looting it's 17k and average age is mid-20s, almost all singles.

Now there's a report of an "armed person investigation" at Towson University which IINM is also in B'more Cty.

Local NBC now showing the original protesters, who have been marching continuously since 3 pm. They started at a Mall next to Coppin State, marched in a big loop and are now starting to approach where the looters are. Hopefully those two groups aren't going to meet; I don't imagine the protesters are going to appreciate what happened.

There's now a large crowd of apparently organized men forming at an intersection a few blocks from the looting; many are wearing matching shirts, but nobody knows whether they're a gang, church, neighborhood watch, or what.

Weird the mayor has made no public statement at all.

It looks like the Ravens won the Super Bowl or the Orioles won the Series.

What just happened at the mall? Suddenly everyone scrambled back to their cars and now it's a rush to get out.

Curfew of 10PM now for the next week. The Orioles are also at home for the next week. Do they get an exception, move up game times, or will games get called early if they run past 10PM?

Black city councilman calls the rioters "thugs."

Can he say that? Isn't that word unacceptable? :rolleyes:

Day games most likely. Even if they go to a 6PM start there's no way they can finish the game and get everyone home by curfew. Other option is to play in DC or Philly, or even move the series to Chicago.

Towson's in Towson. I worked for a year at Goucher College just down the street from there.

I'm a long-time devoted Orioles fan. When I was single and living in Philadelphia, I used to travel to Baltimore frequently for games. I'd take Amtrak to Penn Station in Baltimore and then take a city bus to Memorial Stadium.

One time I was on the bus and two black dudes got on and proceeded to light up cigarettes, despite the "No Smoking" signs clearly displayed on the bus. The bus driver, who was white, didn't say anything.

A black woman in her 50's or 60's, seated a few rows back, spoke up and said "Young gemp'mens, PLEASE do not smoke on this bus. There is folks on here what has asthma and it bothers us something terrible."

The dudes put out their cigarettes.

I don't know what accomplishments the current mayor of Baltimore has to her credit. Maybe they are considerable.

But I can't escape the feeling that the elderly lady from that bus I was on 30 or so years ago would have done a much more effective job of defusing the current situation than the current mayor has done up to this point.

Holy ****. Those shots msnbc is showing are crazy. That massive fire must be that department store that was being looted.

The establishment is doing nothing to defuse the protests for a reason. It helps them justify laws passed to enforce segregation and African American disenfranchisement. It would not surprise me at all if the mayor sent his goon squad (aka police officers) to further enrage the protestors.

One of the most depressing realizations of a long life is that old black women are just as full of sht as the rich white men who run this circus.
