Bad Cop, Bad Cop, Whatcha gonna do?

Re: Bad Cop, Bad Cop, Whatcha gonna do?

Jesus, I hope not. That statistic would indicate a police state.

An interaction could be just saying hi while walking the beat. Technically, the incident I mentioned was in interaction with an officer. If he were a complete jack bag, he could have questioned whether I was drinking, if I was suffering from some sort of malady (given my confusion on where exactly I was), and escalated the situation. :)

I'm certain I did this math in a previous post, but can't find it - must've been in a banninated thread. Wiki says there are 765,000 "sworn personnel" in state and local law enforcement agencies. Figure only 5/7ths of them are working on any given day, that's 546,000 officers working each day. If each of them talks to just 4 civilians - once every 2 hours on an 8 hour shift - that's 2.2M "interactions" per day right there.

Even if I am way off on the 2-3 million daily interactions (your calculations suggest I'm probably not that far off) it's still estimated there are between 11 and 12 million arrests each year by law enforcement in this country. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/uc...ated_number_of_arrests_united_states_2013.xls

So again, notwithstanding the disturbing evidence which has made recent national headlines, I'd suggest that people getting illegally shot or assaulted by police in this country is probably still a relative rarity.

25% are "other offenses"... probably "obstruction of justice" and "resisting arrest". Plus, how many of those charges, do you suppose, are independent? And is that actually bringing someone in, or is that just arrest warrants that happen to be on file? The average citizen in Ferguson MO has three arrest warrants out for him/her.

The average American also has one testicle... Averages are probably not the best measure in this case.

I think if you look at the cite, and the links available, you'll see that it is based upon actual arrest data submitted by law enforcement, excluding instances where people are arrested "on suspicion" of some crime.

So, are the cops lying about the number of arrests? I don't know. I'm sure you believe that. I don't really care. I simply put the cite in my post because cops claim they had at least 11 million interactions with the public, excluding traffic offenses, in 2013, and so I wanted to point out that even if you can give me a bunch of citations per day to some cop somewhere beating up a guy or shooting a guy or whatever, it's still just a tiny, tiny fraction of the overall daily interactions between citizens and law enforcement in this country. Not to say that it's right for a cop to ever act illegally, but contrary to the claim of Priceless and others here, it is still just a rarity.

By your lack of outrage, it shows your complacency that it's OK. And if we go by Kepler's suggestion of a gun ban, there's no way the cops are losing theirs, and that leaves us defenseless against tyranny. Let us not make the same mistake that occurred in the 1760's American Colonies. It is our duty as American citizens to question our leadership and rectify any oppression.

Oh, and if a cop lives in your house, throw him or her out, and cite the third amendment. They are essentially military now, and are trying to quarter themselves in our houses in peace time.

My serious suggestion would be to ban guns in public space. You can keep all the firearms you want at your home, where I will not be visiting. I am actually a big proponent of the fondlers' right to shoot themselves. I just deny they have a right to shoot me.

There are in excess of 315 million people residing in this country legally and illegally, in addition to 100s of thousands of visitors every day. Anyone getting shot by anyone is a relative rarity. But using that metric alone does nothing to signify we don't have a serious problem on our hands with out-of-control cops.

It's still an outright gun ban. How are you supposed to get the thing from the place of purchase to the domicile? We're not stupid.

Re: Bad Cop, Bad Cop, Whatcha gonna do?

You still have to received it from a Federally licensed gun dealer. It can't be drop shipped to your house under current law.

Hand deliver it, or carve out special handling rules for the mail. It should probably be at least as difficult to mail an instrument whose sole purpose is to kill people as it is to ship class 9 dry ice.

First you try to claim the episode at the Bundy Ranch was some kind of Bunker Hill moment and then you say police officers should be barred from living amongst civilians under the 3rd Amendment.

Good effort at late campaigning for Poster of the Year but I've already got that vote locked up.

I would be more likely that you'd see a law put in place where a dealer cannot sell a firearm and the ammunition to that same customer during a single visit to the store. That way the weapon is given directly to the buyer without any undue burden upon the merchant and it can satisfy your overly anxious, puckered sphincter from worrying about the thousands upon thousands of wackos out there taking home their purchases.

Re: Bad Cop, Bad Cop, Whatcha gonna do?

your overly anxious, puckered sphincter

As I said before, I encourage fondlers to kill their family members at home and one another at ranges. That is a public service; let Darwin claim his own.

Just leave the innocent bystanders out of it.
