B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Exactly. Now, I don't necessarily blame Michigan for not wanting to travel to play away series, as it may not be advantageous for a variety of reasons, but I think we all kind of chuckled at the thought of Michigan being willing to schedule a 2 for 2 contract with North Dakota (as was suggested).

.....

So, it appears that the last time Michigan played a road non-conference series was December of 1986. I'm not going to hold my breath until they schedule another.
It's just like B1G football, we're not about to go schedule a game at a MAC school like some of our other conference mates. Why should we go to your rink, when we can offer you the opportunity to play at Yost?

Perhaps I should have said this earlier, and I know this might be difficult for Michigan fans to realize because their team doesn't ever travel, but outside of Michigan, nobody really cares about the GLI. :p:D:D
I live in Michigan and do not care about the GLI. I usually still go, because it's hockey, and I like winning.

Sure. Michigan plays in a crap conference and gets easy wins. Congratulations. Minnesota could be a consistent Top-5 program if their entire conference was filled with pseudo Community Colleges like the CCHA is.
Is this where I'm supposed to apologize that all Michigan does is win? Or am I supposed to point out those strong WCHA opponents of yours like Tech, Bemidji, SCSU, Mankato or Anchorage? Or how middle of the pack UNO has done about the same in the CCHA as in the WCHA? Or perhaps point out how 45% of the CCHA teams made the NCAA tourney last year and only 33% of WCHA teams made last year's tourney? Since we all seem to have so much fun picking whatever statistics make our arguement and ignoring everything else.

Of course none of this CCHA vs WCHA crap will matter once the B1G takes over.

Because Yost looks like the inside of a garbage can. If you want to experience history with the modern convenience of color take up a game at Mariucci. If you want to experience arguably the nation's most exciting student dance group, travel to Madison. If you want to watch hockey how it was meant to be watched, come to Grand Forks. :p:D:D

As a matter of fact I would like an apology from you. I'd also like several $100 bills. When can I expect to be receiving these things?

If you want the most intimidating atmosphere in college hockey, where very few teams come out with victories in, come to Yost.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

How is it possible to go the tourney 22 straight times and only win two of them? That's a staggering amount of failure.

Then again, coming out of the CCHA probably doesn't prepare a team for actual competition.

The Bills are embarrassed for you guys.

I rather be invited to the dance than be some loser program who makes it once every 4 years and gets destroyed when they get there.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Love how you cherry picked a one year time frame here and acted like this is typical.

Well, looking at the NCAA Tournament since 2003 (when it went to 16 teams, and yes, this is purely an arbitrary selection on my part), we get the following numbers:

NCAA Participants:
WCHA - 44 (~42%, including 9 of the 12 teams currently in the conference (Bemidji went as a member of the CHA))
CCHA - 38 (~32%, including 9 of the 11 teams currently in the conference (10/12 if you include Omaha from '03-'10))

Head to Head:
WCHA holds a 14-9 advantage

Frozen Fours:
WCHA - 15
CCHA - 9

Frozen Four Head to Head:
WCHA holds a 3-1 advantage

National Championship Game Participants:
WCHA - 7
CCHA - 5

National Champions:
WCHA - 5
CCHA - 1

What does this tell us?
The two conferences have been fairly equal in getting teams to the NCAA Tournament. The conferences have also had strong success getting their teams to the title game (7/44 for the WCHA (~16%) and 5/38 for the CCHA (~13%)). The biggest discrepancy that I see is that the WCHA has been significantly better at winning the whole thing (50% of the time) compared to the WCHA (10% of the time).

Again, this is looking at data from the last 10 years. CCHA fans could rightly look at the last 4 years (2009-present) and point to the fact that they have sent more teams to the NCAAs than the WCHA (17-16), and that they have a winning record against the WCHA in the NCAA Tournament (6-5). However, the WCHA still has the only title between the two conferences in that group, while the CCHA could come back by pointing out that they have had 3 title game participants to the WCHA's 2 (and 5 Frozen Fours to the WCHA's 4). Ultimately, I feel that a 10 year period is more reflective than a 4 year period, but I think either way you look at it, these two conferences have been very similar on the national stage over either period of time.

Of course, if we wanted to see a more historic approach, one could go back to probably 1981-1982 and pull the data from that time period. Unfortunately, I do not have that extra amount of time at the moment.
