B1G Championship in Detroit

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

This debate can go on for a long time.

But what to do?

How about we all send letters to our athletic directors telling them what we see and explaining that a little work will go a long way.

Here is what isn't going to change, the 2016 championship is at the X, and the 2017 will be at the Joe. The B1G hockey conference will go on.

This isn't going to change.

Let's see if we can address some simple changes to make the event better?

The simplest of all:
Reduce ticket prices
Increase the advertising budget from it's current amount of $25.87

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

I think it will take more than that but it is a start. They need to find a way to make the fans care.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

Big question now is if we have enough gas to survive.

We've had softer Saturdays and so appear to gotten a bit tired towards the end of the weekend. And we fly like you do. The impact (if there is one) will last the second half of the second and first half of the third (then mindless adrenaline will kick in).

I for one would like to see a Minnesota state conference sweep: U MN, MSU and SCSU.

I think that might only come with time. Rivalries have to develop. How weak the conference was this year wasn't much of a step in that direction. In the WCHA, I could get fired up for at least half the teams based on something that happened in the past. It might also help if a couple teams are added that can become competitive a la Penn State. When there are only 5 other teams, if a couple have a couple down years, it doesn't leave much for competition. Seems with more teams, there will typically be a couple on the upswing.

Quick thread recap for anyone just joining:

A bunch of people that don't bother to go to the tournament complain about attendance.

Minnesotans like hockey of many varieties.

tInsecurity complains about marketing of Hockeytown

B1G conference does lousy job of promoting hockey, tournament attendance looks pathetic in NHL sized arena

Ok, now maybe we can talk about games? I'm hoping we see both teams playing their game tonight, because it's an exciting match up and good hockey when both of these teams are on.
Also, my picks in this tournament were correct so far, I'm hoping to be wrong tonight.

You're the best WT, hands down.:o As for the game, I am looking for some racehorse hockey with a lot of odd man rushes because both teams have good transition hockey and aren't afraid to get their d-men deep. I am hoping that your squad is a little gassed for game three, but I am not banking on it. The Gophers better play better than last night or they are toast. Now of course, if the Wilcox can have a night like last night, I like our chances. If not, lets circle back to your team being gassed. Good luck & go Gophers!:)

Spot on. When both of these teams are playing their style of play, and at their best, these games are a TON of fun to watch.

I am an old-timer who now mostly lurks. But, since I first engaged in this debate, my perspective has grown--I started as an Ann Arbor-based Michigan fan, but I now live in Duluth and have for almost six years. So I have perspective on both environments.
Welcome back to a five star poster! Please feel free to come in from the shadows more often.

Irresistible Force vs. Irresistible Force should be a great show. My picks were exactly the same as yours, proving once again great minds think alike.;) Naturally my heart and head were conflicted in the first semi-final, as yours will be tonight. I'm still saying Wilcox>Racine. But both played very well Friday; it is at the Joe; so it's a certainly open question...

Great summary, anyone new to the thread won't have to read back now.;)

I'm with the Captain in his assessment. Hope the Ugly Helmets are tired, but won't count on it. Gophs better be more aggressive on forecheck and more responsible in their own zone than they were last night or the Wolverines will kill them.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

Very entertaining game and fun to watch.
U-Mi through everything at MN in the 2nd but could not create separation. Thought they lost a half a step or so in the 3rd, which is understandable given its their 3rd game, to me it was more apparent along the boards.

I noticed that as well. Good example why it's so important to get one of the top two seeds.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

The attendance at the BIG tourney is reflective of a league with too few teams. How many times do you have to play the same teams
Realignment caused by BIG has ruined most tourneys out west
Hockey East with over 13,000 both nights had biggest crowds

Not just the tourneys...regular season, too.
What the B1G powers to be have failed to grasp is college hockey is a regional sport built on regional rivalries.
I loved it when MN played U-Mi, MSU, & OSU - on occasion - but our bread and butter was games against rivals from the general geographic area. Hockey just doesn't have the national pull & unless there is a huge influx of teams it never will; the Hockey East tourney is exhibit #1.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

**** could be worse. Michigan could be Wisconsin or sparty and not have a solid coaching situation.

If the old man hangs it up, Mel Pearson will come back. If not, doesn't matter, he has one more year left on his contract here and it will be nice to send him off the right way next year.

Stick with Racine all year long next year and Michigan can skip the B1G Tournament altogether, they'll be at-worst 2 seed at-large. But this hot potato **** is what the problem is, IMO. Racine did exceptional tonight. He proved he deserved that starting spot after saving 40 of 41 shots against Tech in the GLI.

Coach Pearson signed a 5 year extension, he is not leaving Tech. Why would he want to follow Red. He is making his own story at his alma mater and enjoying all it has to offer.

Michigan's interim AD swiped Jim Harbaugh from the NFL. Not to mention Mel's buyout is probably chump change to this athletic department.

The only reason you have Mel Pearson is because Michigan's previous AD who was run out of town had a requirement for his head coaching hires to have prior HC experience. It's pretty well known around here and inside the program that that's why Mel took a vacation.

Oh well not true, Mel is not going anywhere, he is going to finish his career at Tech...
