Re: B.U. Season Thread 4. From a weekend that will determine playoff seedings on....

Doesn't surprise me. Sure, his slapshot is NHL ready, but his defense is not. If he does go pro, I'd bet he'd be AHL for next year at the very least.

Probably true. If he makes the NHL full-time, probably as a third pairing guy EV, no PK time, and a PP specialist.

As much as I love Colby I think he's in the AHL forever unless his defensive play makes a huge improvement.

Teams are willing to put up with subpar defense if they can get goals galore out of their D. Look at a guy like Marc Andre Bergeron. Guy is as bad defensively as they get, but his PP production is through the roof.

So, Brett Bennett is going to the Frozen Four.

He and Milan will get about the same amount of playing time. :D

Wisconsin looks like the team to beat. Brendan Smith is a force.

As much as I know people don't want to hear this, don't bet against BC. They peak at the right time every year (save last year) and when their big guns are not scoring others pick up the slack. Matt Lombardi I believe has scored more goals in the last 2 games then he did his first three years, John Muse is playing like the Muse of old.

I hope the personnel turbulence for our team ends soon in terms of potential underclass defections. Should we lose three more underclass defenders, we would be very thin there.

To be truthful, I didn't have a lot of high expectations going into the season given the loss of 5/6 of our first two lines as well our first defensive pair, particularly the unexpected loss of Brian Strait, a legitimate stay at home, defensive defender. It is not easy to repeat as NCAA Champion and the danger of a hangover is always present. That and the difficult first half made it tough to climb out of a hole we dug for ourselves.

I am proud of our seniors and the contirbutions they made over 4 years. I wish them well along with Nick and any of the others that decide to move to the next level.

I hope that next year's team comes back with a great resolve to return BU to an elite status. That means a lot of guys stepping up their games and a contribution by the incoming freshmen.

Not if my Bulldogs have anything to say :) As a proud BU alum, I would love nothing more than Yale to put BC away! It would mean a birth for Yale in the Frozen Four, something they haven't done since 1952.

Regardless, BC didn't look particularly sharp against Alaska (minus Lombardi's SH which was nice), and Yale's strength is their forecheck, so they can make some of those young BC defenders a little shakey.

Cam Gaudet, Ross's brother, made Globe Super Team from Austin Prep. He'll be in prep school next year. He's a D-man. Does anyone know if he's legit D1, or is he a D3 type?

I'm excited about today's BC-Yale game. Two teams that love to go up and down at a fast pace. Two teams whose defense could be exposed by an aggressive forecheck. I could definitely see this game playing out similar to BC-Maine in the HE title game. I was in Worcester yesterday, and I thought that Yale looked like the best team there for 40 minutes, but then NoDak really took it to them in the third. BC and Alaska were very evenly matched. I think I'd still have to go with BC today because of the experience factor, especially in net, but I expect it to be a very close and very exciting game.

If you play all 4 years, then after your senior year at some point in the offseason you become a UFA and can sign with anyone. I think the date is August 1st.

The date is August 15th.

The ATOs keep the clock on the contract w/ the NHL club from starting. Schroeder, for example, signed a contract with the Vancouver Canucks, but then a couple days later signed an ATO with the Manitoba Moose.

Correct. Schroeder signed a 3 year contract and without the ATO, his playing this year would burn one of those years.

mwade is correct. No one else can sign Gryba to a deal while Ottawa has his rights, an ATO allows them to evaluate him at the professional level. After the season ends, they'll likely give him a two or three year entry level contract if they like what they see. With Schneider, I think they knew what they had so they signed him immediately, but only for the next season and on. An ATO allowed him to play the remainder of that season, too.

The evaluation thing is typically for undrafted free agents. Gyrba, as a drafted player, most likely would have a contract before he went to the pros. His agent would insist on it. Plus, as a 22 year old, he only has to sign a 2 year contract.

I don't see him leaving before graduation unless he can finish his degree before going to Binghamton. His parents are very serious about him getting his diploma. FWIW, I saw him on campus this morning, so he's still here.

If this is true, it is very refreshing for me to read especially since he is canadian and his parents value the meaning of getting a college degree. To many players leave early - especially if they were not 1st rounders - and end up playing in the AHL all season. Most recent example of that for BU is Strait. I am sure he is developing fine and his stats in the A look like it but have to wonder if BU would have gone back to the tourney had they had his presence in the locker room?

I doubt anyone is betting against. BC. I've been saying for months they are going to Detroit. It's different than saying you don't want to see them in Detroit. :)

That fluky shorthanded goal just iced their trip for them.

Agreed. I felt they are as good as anyone the last 2/3 of the year, Wisconsin seems to have some mojo right now. Then again, we won't know for 2 weeks. RIT probably wishes they could play tomorrow

I thought North Dakota would be going from this region. Won 12 of their last 13. Pretty surprised Yale made it this far.

Wisconsin vs. Boston College would be a very entertaining final.

Re: B.U. Season Thread 4. From a weekend that will determine playoff seedings on....

why would you have ill will toward brett bennett?!?
would rather not see him win a national title after the circumstances that led to him transferring to Wisconsin in the first place

it also would have been nice for BU to make the national tourney my senior year at BU... is that so much to ask?

clearly, I'd still root for Wisconsin in that national title game

Miami coming back to win after being down 3-1 with a minute to go would be a very entertaining final.

I had a living-in-the-past moment tonight and popped in cc99's highlight DVD from last season. *siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*

OK. I'm back. So, one thing that kinda stood out on this viewing was the NCAA semi-final game against Vermont and VSap's game tying goal in the 2nd period. A beautiful, bangbang play that he one-timed perfectly. If he was able to do that with any regularity this season, who knows where they might have wound up. Shows to go ya just how magical the 08-09 season was.

bennett wouldnt really be 'winning" the title, he's been riding the pine in every important game this season since december i believe. so hes just along for the ride.

I totally agree. It's weird about McConnell, I was reading some ushr archieves and how highly regarded he was growing up. He seemed to get worse every year at BU. I don't think there was a slower guy on the ice. It's like he was skating around with weights on his legs.

They have showed the last three goals twice during the Miami-Michigan broadcast. *sigh*

Anyone watching this game? It's a crime one of these team's season ends tonight. By far, the best game I've watched all year. Two teams playing with intensity and skill at the top of their game. Haven't seen that since April 2009.
