B.U. Season Thread 4. From a weekend that will determine playoff seedings on....

Re: B.U. Season Thread 4. From a weekend that will determine playoff seedings on....

Had some people asking at various points this year about the BU 5-on-3s, so I sat down this afternoon and scoured over the BU boxscores from this season and calculated the team's 5-on-3 conversion rates. There's a post on the blog in my signature where you can read about just how bad (and oh boy, was it bad) the BU 2-man-up unit was.

The blog entry should be below the live blog for tonight's HE finals, [shamelessplug]which you are obviously all welcome to follow along to tonight starting at 7 p.m.[/shamelessplug]

You beat me to it. I'd planned on researching the 5 on 3 "efficiency" this coming week. By my observation, not only was BU unproductive with the 2 man advantage, it was usually a harbinger of doom once the second penalty was over (opponents scoring within 3 - 5 minutes).

You'd have to look into that yourself, although there were at least a few times I saw BU scored after the 5-on-3 was over, but while still on the PP. Maybe 2 or 3 additional goals of that nature, something like that.

I don't think #6, by himself, would be an optimal choice as captain. Sure he always works hard, but he seems to try to be the friend of everyone on the team, reminds me of McGuirk in that regard. And while he skates his arse off, nothing that I have seen indicates he would get in the face of someone who wasn't doing the same themselves.

I would definitely support a cocaptaincy with him and #5. Who when the players were meeting with their families and friends after QF game 2 didn't seem to say a word, except when 3 players were talking amongst themselves and laughing he told them there was nothing to be laughing about and then left the room.

A little good cop/bad cop between the two of them, a la Gilroy/McCarthy and Zancanaro/Vandergulik would be my desired result. Maybe an A for 12 also.

Also thanks to all the players leaving for all they have done during their years in Boston. I just hope 25 doesn't also end up going, the team would be seriously undermanned on D if that happens. Maybe the coaches would try converting Kilroy back to D, it worked the first time.

Good stuff. However the ridiculously small times for some of these PP's just reconfirms my belief that with the status of technology nowadays PP's should be graded in goals per 2 min of penalty time, not conversion percentage.

Question for anyone still out there: if the 2 uvm-bu games at the gut went to bu would we have gotten the last at large bid? :(

Question for you all - if BU went out the way Maine went out tonight, would you all be as disappointed? I know I wouldn't be. Maine played great and stayed with BC the whole game. It was a great game and a shame someone had to lose it. I wish the BU-Maine game had been like that.

Prob not..my guess is UMD or Ferris....UMD would move up with that loss to UVM dropping UVM down. BU would also but too many teams to jump over.

Probably but I, like many others, came to grips with the fact that this team would come up short either way. That was a great hockey game tonight no matter who you support.

Not that anybody here was doubting 3hock, but just got official word from the team that Bonino is in Anaheim, will sign with the Ducks and forego his senior season.

So there is a fairly good chance that next year's senior class could be Pereira, Victor Saponari, and Kraus?

Sorry Nick, while you're with that organization, I can't root for you to do well. Especially if you're up with the big club.

Here's to hoping you get traded soon!

Re: B.U. Season Thread 4. From a weekend that will determine playoff seedings on....

Good luck to Nick, the real Most Outstanding Player of last year's Frozen Four.

I loved the way the kid played. Worked hard on his shortcomings, and very rarely gave us a truly poor game. Unfortunately I think he went out with one of his worse efforts but, unlike his classmate #25, I'll never doubt the effort and heart he put into being a member of this team. If he's healthy this whole season, I feel like not only are his numbers better, the entire team is better.

I will proudly add a #13 jersey to my 33 jersey and fondly remember the kid who scored the greatest goal I've ever seen in person. (97 made the perfect play to set him up, but we should never forget the shot he drilled there).

Nick was the first Terrier since Drury to get over 100 pts and average better than 1pt/g for his career. Congrats and good luck.

Millan and Muse are a wash when they're on their game and BU has some name guys on defense (but BC had the best team d in the league). You can't tell me there isn't a talent gap up front between the two teams. BC has a clear edge.

BC does seem to have the edge for sure, but when BU actually came to play head to head they were able to hold off BC and each game was quite competitive. I think most on here would maintain that if BU had even a little bit more consistent, they would have made the NCAAs and made some noise there, but it is clear to me that this team didn't have the talent overall to come close to repeating.

The real problem was that this team wasn't deep. It had that nice 9-3 run after New Years, but was just 5-5 after Trivino got hurt. Who knows what would have happened if that hadn't happened, but that 9-10-11 line was playing great hockey. Nothing seemed to gel when he was out.

Well if Bonino is the only forward departing early and Cisse comes next year despite his injury, we'll have 3 reserve forwards. Still a ton of young guys. The situation on defense will be much thinner.

Re: B.U. Season Thread 4. From a weekend that will determine playoff seedings on....

The name on the back of the jersey seemed to be more important then the name on the front.... That is the difference between BU and BC this year, not talent or coaching....

That has been the problem for most of the teams for the last decade. I would disagree and say that is an issue with the coaching.

Right again on Bonino I see.

could have 30 reserve forwards... if we don't have 3-4 1st line caliber, and 3-4 2nd line caliber, with 3-4 3rd line caliber, etc --- we'll be looking at roughly the same thing.

Going to disagree but more on a technicality. I think everybody who was regularly in the lineup proved they could play at the D-1 college level (thinking specifically of the freshie D-men, Santana, Courtnall, Megan, Chiasson).

The problem, especially after Trivino went down, was that BU didn't have that go-to top scoring unit with the talent to score even on a down night. That Trivino line was great defensively, and it was freeing up Bonino's line to go ahead and play offense, which was working well, but still couldn't compete with a lot of HE's best top scoring lines.

All that said, count me among those agreeing with 3hock about the whole, "name on the back" deal.

I think I should have known the team was in trouble during the first couple weeks, when I'd ask the same question of both Parker and the players, and the player's answers would often be amazingly different than what Parker was saying.

There was just something strangely off about the team's mental state from the get-go.

Re: B.U. Season Thread 4. From a weekend that will determine playoff seedings on....

How can you watch BC this year and then look at BU and say it was just coaching?

There was a vast talent disparity between the two teams, especially at forward. BC's third line would rival our first.

Maybe that's coaching philosophy and our talent is closer to BC's...but it sure doesn't feel like it. It seemed like every time a BC player had a one on one to enter the offensive zone they got it done. BU couldn't enter the zone against Maine with any sort of ease on Friday.

BC had the speed, the playmaking, from three lines. We barely had one line that could do that.
