Atlantic Hockey Pick the Standings Contest 2021-22 (komey1 Edition)

With regards to note 2, I like the Christmas Jesus best.

I'm hoping everyone is aware that I'm quoting movie lines and not making untoward religious commentary.

Quote "(4) Mercyhurst is sitting in 2nd on 4 tie games!"

This one shouldn't surprise any of us, Mr. Gotkin is known for his thoroughly defensive style of play first, usually has fast counter attack teams and will make you pay the price when any opportunity arises. I remember the fantastic Mercyhurst teams of years past, blessed with good goaltenders and mobile defensemen, they would be outshot by 20 plus shots a game and still eak out a win. The opponent would get tons of opportunities from outside the slot, the speedy Hurst defenders would then clear out for a quick transition up the ice for a chance to do something. Mr. Gotkin however was always a your end of the ice hockey man first, many would say that he played for the "tie" more than play for a win. It is part of the reason he has been so successful over the years, however part of the reason he seldom reaches for the top. A good man, a good school, a good team and a long time sticking to the same style.

I would describe the Hurst teams as a transition team, solid all round with an emphasis on defensive play and always ready to capitalize of any mistake on the quick transition.

Things to note:

(1) The Random Number is angry and chasing TalonsUpPuckDown for his statements about Baby Jesus.

(1a) Only TalonsUpPuckDown is better than the Random Number this week.

(2) Canisius creates the biggest goal differential this week by defeating RIT 5 to 2 on Friday and 4 to 1 on Saturday. (Everyone else likes to win by one goal, and in OT, if possible?)

(3) Canisius now has 4 games in the division and sits at 75% games won.

(4) Mercyhurst is sitting in 1st with 4 tie games!

(5) AIC makes a great showing by taking #12 Providence to OT

(6) Canisius gets 18 votes in the poll and RIT gets 1...but they are there

Biggest movers this week:
Canisius moves up 5 places from 9th to to 4th with an impressive sweep of RIT
Sacred Heart and Army drop 3 places to 7th and 10th, respectively

Things to note: (or things I note that have no relevance, but I find it interesting)

(1) Random Number and the Coaches Poll are in a dead heat.

(2) Random Number is still performing very well.

(3) AIC has a huge goal differential game with a defeat of Bentley 5 to 0 and then Bentley takes them to OT and wins the very next night.

(4) Canisius puts up big numbers against Mercyhurst defeating them 6 to 1 and then Mercyhurst comes back to defeat Canisius 5 to 2 the very next night.

(5) Holy Cross has the top 2 point scorers in the Atlantic Hockey division but the team is currently positioned in last place.

(6) Hale (Holy Cross), Bendorf (Mercyhurst), and Liebold (Holy Cross) have established themselves as the playmakers with assists leading their point scoring by 90.9%, 87.5% and 60%, respectively.

Biggest movers this week:
Sacred Heart moves up 5 places from 7th to 2nd.
Niagara drops 3 places from 6th to 9th.

Just for clarification, I think the Win % column you have is overall, not just conference. For this game, seems like conference win % would be the better stat.

Things to note: (or things I note that have no relevance, but I find it interesting)

(1) Niagara is the only team to play only 6 games. All other teams have at least played 8 with a maximum of 10.

(2) Bentley jumped 5 places going from 6th place to 1st place.

(3) Bing also made the same big surge this week going from 8th to 3rd, which makes sense since Bing is the only contestant with Bentley listed in 1st places. Not other contestant has them listed higher than 4th. (The Coaches Poll has them listed in 8th place.)

(4) Keaton Mastrodonato (Canisius) has an impressive name. It seems like it should be announced in the octagon.

(5) In non-conference play, on Friday:

Holy Cross beat Brown soundly.
Mercyhurst beat number 17 Ohio State
RIT squeaked out Princeton.

(6) In non-conference play, on Saturday:

Holy Cross took New Hampshire to OT
Mercyhurst lost to 17 Ohio State by only 1 goal
RIT squeaked by Princeton in a 1 goal game in OT

(7) Niagara had a more difficult time, playing number 4 Michigan. Niagara did well against Michigan until the 3rd period. Then, on both nights, Michigan ran away with the scoring once the last third arrived.

Biggest movers this week:
Bentley moves up 5 places from 6th to 1st.
The next 5 teams on the list dropped 1 position and Bentley just stepped on them all.

Things to note: (or things I note that have no relevance, but I find it interesting)

(1) Air Force is making big strides upward, now at position 6 after being in 9th just a couple of weeks ago.

(2) Air Force and Army are matching each other in games won, lost, tied, conference winning percentage, overall winning percentage, home and away wins....the only differentiator seems to be goals against, which is lower for Army. Perhaps this is a military strategy?

(3) Three (3) AIC players now lead the stats with Rigali, Theodore, and Stella, respectively.

(4) Chris Theodore of AIC has moved into the lead as a playmaker, with 17 points on the season and 13 of those coming from assists.

(5) Goals, and not assists, seem to be the predominate point makers on review of the points from the year, this week. Five (5) of the leaders getting more than 50% of their points from goals, 2 splitting their points evenly, and 3 having assists give them 50% of more of their points. (Now that I look at it, not that interesting, but I had already started the comparison. Just don't read note number 5. Oh, are you here already? Now you know how I felt at this point.)

(6) With 8 games played between the pipes, Debrouwer from Bentley is sitting on 7 wins and no losses with a save percentage of .939 and 1 shutout.

(7) AIC is pushing far up and will be hard to catch, leading the league with 38 points. Bentley is 8 points behind with the same amount of games played. Canisius is 8 points behind and they have already played 2 additional games.
