Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

This is why I detest the shootout. If there had have been a shootout last night and if Mercyhurst loses it, does anyone remember what a great comeback they had? No, it's lost in the fact that Michigan won a skills contest at the end of the game. Sure they still would have got their one point, but it's tarnished by the fact that it goes down in the record books as a loss.

Great stuff by Mercyhurst last night. I love when David falls Goliath like that.
Actually, I believe it goes down as a tie. The shootout was purely exhibition because the CCHA is using a 3-2-1-0 point system (which at least is preferable to the NHL system) in it's regular season this year.

The NCAA officially recognizes it as a tie for all tournament implications.

Report on the Scrimmage AIC@Holy Cross. Free admission, maybe 100 people there.

First two periods, there were penalties called, but not served. AIC rotated goalies. Score would have been 2-0 Holy Cross. offense looked rusty, but elsewise, they looked decent.

In the 3rd period, they played 10 minutes of AIC powerplay first, with the last 2 mins 5-3. AIC sputtered badly in the first 8 minutes. Then Holy Cross went on their 10 minutes, and didn't do much except a late goal on the 5-4. Then they obviously dominated on the 5-3.

Boulevard Diner capped off the evening.

Next week starts the season for AIC with Robert Morris coming to town Sat & Sun.

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

USCHO Poll was released today. Atlantic Hockey is represented by RIT at #18 (up from #20), with Mercyhurst, Air Force, and Robert Morris all receiving at least 1 vote.

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

What makes you say that? They don't even play the three teams they either beat or tied last season. QU, RPI, and NU beat them last year. Lowell is better than Brown. What they do have going for them is two games against (I'm guessing on the road) Clarkson. If the Knights are as bad as they were last year, at least the Falcons will have a shot. Although... as bad as Clarkson was, they did beat the # 1 team in the AHA.

Bentley OOC went from 0-6 in '08, to 2-4 in '09, to 2-3-1 in '10; I think their OOC record will continue to improve, as the opponent is irrelevant, up to a point anyway.

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

Kudos to Canisius for getting the conference's lone win last night (let me wash my mouth out now :D )

RIT showed they will be tough in their loss to St. Cloud.

Let' see what today brings.

Report from Robert Morris(4) @ AIC(1)

Pretty good game. AIC still looks rusty on offense on the small, but important things. Let me first say Robert Morris is the better team overall. Hats off to their goalie who played a solid game. AIC had chances, but could only get one past him.
Meisner was solid himself, for AIC and made some fantastic saves.
The first two goals that R.M. scored were passes from down low to a skater coming in from the blue line, uncovered. The first was perfectly placed in the upper corner and the second looked to be on a deflection.
R.M.'s third goal came on a failed clearing, which was quickly followed by a 2-1. Both of these in the 3rd period. AIC was pressuring R.M. in the 3rd until this point. After a timeout, AIC quickly scored on a cross ice pass.
AIC did look improved. Hopefully time will allow the players on the same line to be on the same page(that sixth sense you have with linemates) because with some decent bounces, and being in the right place, they could have easily won this game or made it a tie late. Three times, AIC had a guy right in front of the goalie, alone with the puck. But each time the player was not positioned to get a good shot off, or did not know he had time to make a hockey move.
Robert Morris does not give teams a chance to take it easy, and buzzed around the ice much of the game, so this weekend should give AIC a good learning experience game.

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

Another solid night for the AHA. UConn, Niagara, and Canisius all get points in OOC games. Hopefully this is an early indicator of the success the league will have all year

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

RMU leads AIC 3-1 after the first period. Trevor Lewis, Colin South, and Nick Chiavetta have goals for the Colonials. Tom Mele scored for AIC.

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

RMU won 6-3 at AIC.

Better game in some respects, but worse in others. Simply too many quality chances for RMU. AIC had the ice advantage early on and scored the first goal on a quality pass and score(which all goals had to be vs RMU this weekend)
AIC took a penalty and almost killed it off when RMU was able to turn around play quickly and score on a good shot. RMU turned it on in their offensive zone for the next 4 minutes, even though Meisner would like to have the 3rd goal back, I'm sure. AIC didn't fold, and was able to get out of the period only down 3-1.
In the 2nd, they were able to get one back on a 5-3. They also had a couple of high percentage opportunities that just didn't go their way. Plus, like I sad, RMU's goalie was solid. Another AIC shot, into an empty net, looked to be blocked by a stick of another AIC player.
In the third, AIC could not get anything started. RMU came out pressuring, and AIC's first thought was to get the equalizer, and RMU took advantage of that 3 times in the 3rd. AIC answered RMU's 4th goal to make it a 3-4 game, but they got no further. With about 7 minutes left, AIC was on a delayed penalty, but got called for an interference call while trying to skate the puck into the RMU zone. This brought a 4x4 for 2 minutes. AIC was either overwhelmed or not ready to play defense and RMU took advantage to make it 5-3. RMU stepped it up with it counted, and held a 21-9 shots advantage in the 3rd, and control of the majority of the period.

Big rebound game for AIC upcoming Friday at home vs Holy Cross. This team has potential, but they need points Friday!

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

RMU defeats Ohio State in Columbus tonight, 4-3. Crichton, Hervato, Cramer, and Lyle scored for the Colonials. This is the first 3-0 start in RMU history

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

Good win by Robert Morris. Niagara with a decent tie against Lowell. Every little bit helps the conference.

Heads up to anyone going to see a Sacred Heart game @ Harbor Yard.
Tickets are $19.50 at the door. At least you get a free ticket to the night's AHL game. (but they will clear the building)
I did check on the Sacred Heart Website, and if you purchase tickets directly through the Sacred Heart Ticket Office at least the day before, tickets are only $10 each, which can be left at will call.

Re: Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

Looking like a 2-0 weekend for Atlantic Hockey in non-conference play...

Niagara up 4-0 on this year's favorite AH punching bag Northeastern; Army's up 4-1 7 minutes into the third period over the University of Massachusetts

EDIT: 5-2 Final for Army, 4-1 for Niagara. Good weekend for AH.
