KILLEEN, Texas - Officials at the Fort Hood Army Base in Killeen say seven people are dead and at least 20 are wounded in a mass shooting on the Fort property.

The attack apparently happened at the Soldier Readiness Center at the post in Killeen, Texas.

One shooter was in custody, one was surrounded and another was on the loose.

Army personnel say they are not certain whether the victims are civilians or military personnel.

The Fort Hood public affairs spokesman said the Army is setting up a special operations center to handle the response.

The official base Web site has posted a message that it is on lock down and in an emergency situation. It also urged people to stay indoors.

Nine schools on the base -- seven elementary and two middle -- are included in the lock down.

CBS out of Austin, TX is reporting one shooter is still on the loose.

Number of wounded believed to be around 30.

12 confirmed dead, 30 wounded. The shooter was a soldier - he's been neutralized.

Two suspects caught, one still at large. Usually it seems like these things are done by lone gunmen, I can't recall anywith multiple shooters.

Columbine is the only incident I can think of with multiple shooters.

On a much smaller scale, this has happened there before. My son was there for 4 years until this past June. His best friend's wife delivered a baby there this afternoon.

Fort Carson in Colorado Springs has had similar issues with their military personnel too...big story in Rolling Stone about it this month. Murders, drugs and all sorts of violence.

I meant in regards to someone shooting people on a base. Regardless, though, this is awful.

A U.S. official tells MSNBC that the Fort Hood shooter who was killed has been named as Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan.

Thankfully, this jackwagon was ventilated rather quickly relative to his shooting beginning.

He cut into what he was already doing to address the shootings. If anything, the media is culpable for being clumsy about starting their feed.

No he came on stage - talked about the conference and then the shootings.

For a minute. He gave some group that had probably waited forever for today's event the courtesy of a minute or two before brushing them off with "this isn't just talk - we're going to act on this" and then switching gears to the shooting.

Sheesh. The lengths people will go to, sometimes.
