ASU Hockey

Re: ASU Hockey

I think the WCHA should admit them. Nobody else has to go to Alaska for conference games.

Phoenix is a lot easier to get to than Alaska.

Re: ASU Hockey

They've been doing it to the Coyotes for years. Print media isn't going to bother covering something that no one bothers to attend in person. You're lucky if you get some bloggers in their basements to write something. The now "Arizona" Coyotes are once again dead last in NHL attendance. Just over 180,000 fans total through the gates so far this year, less than half of what the top teams have drawn (in excess of 400,000).

The shear number of ASU students might get them a reasonable crowd at games if there was even bare minimum interest in hockey . Heck if only 5% of the student attend they'll have crowds of 3500+. Unfortunately right now they are drawing less than 1% of the student body, barely averaging 700 per game.

I went to two ASU/UofA games when they were a club team. I think they are still playing in that same arena...which I would assume is pushing capacity with 700 people. The rink just isn't built to hold that many people. Its a hockey arena in Tempe AZ.

The Coyotes are looking to get out of Glendale once their current lease is up. It seems the top two scenarios are the Suns/Coyotes rejoin forces and share the suns arena. I've also heard rumors that ASU and the Coyotes are talking about building an Arena to share. If you're familiar with AZ, Talking Stick, which is associated with one of the native tribes, has been building things like crazy down here and would be interesting to see if they'd jump on ship to build the new Coyotes/ASU arena.

The biggest mistake the Coyotes ever made was building in Glendale. I live in Gilbert, it takes over an hour to get to Glendale, especially considering you are driving in rush hour most games. I go to 1, maybe 2, games a year. If they were in the East Valley...they'd have a lot better attendance.

They will run out of dough before any of this comes to pass. Athletic department will never support hockey

I'm curious what you are basing this on. I have many friends in the athletic department and they are optimistic they can make money or at worst be a break even sport. We have a long way to go, but that is expected being in our first year of D-1 and having little to no publicity while in the ACHA.

Playing in an arena that small with the amount of travel you have to make? There's no way you're coming anywhere close to breaking even.

Re: ASU Hockey

So something odd was noticed at the game last night. ASU didn't have their goalies sit with the team, but rather behind the large doors across the ice leading towards the visitor's locker rooms. No other team does this. Do they always do this? Any idea on the 'why' ?

They've said they don't plan on playing in Oceanside going forward, whether they build an on-campus arena or not. They're going to play where the Suns play or at Gila River before they keep playing at Oceanside. I'm not saying I think they're gonna make a profit either way, but going forward the size of their rink shouldn't be a problem. I'd be surprised if they play at Oceanside at all next year, except for maybe one or two exhibition games.

Anyway I really hope they don't join the Big Ten. That would be beyond stupid for us and for ASU.

Oceanside is a temporary fix. Next season most games will be played at Gila River Arena where the Coyotes play. The school is weighing options on potentially joining with the Coyotes on a joint venture or building something on campus. But Oceanside is not a long term arrangement.

I have heard that the Big Ten was one of the three options the school was weighing. However, when we were at Bemidji State, they were saying that we had not had discussions with the Big Ten. The WCHA seems to be the most aggressive in trying to get ASU, but it would seem the NCHC would be the best fit. The talk was year three to be in a conference, but scheduling has gone much better than expected and may push it back a season. Hard part is there very little media room in this town and none of these things are able to be vetted.

One side note on the Arena stuff. The Coyotes CEO said on a local radio station that the club will have some news on a new Arena by the end of the season. That will at least clear up that side of things and the CEO mentioned ASU as one of the possibilities.

Is there a list of who ASU has scheduled for next year anywhere? I noticed this year, ASU's season is over at the end of February. Any chance of getting a March series next year (maybe one of the Atlantic schools has a bye that week)?

Agreed, I would be against actual membership for Hockey. The Big Ten should just agree to a scheduling arrangement with them/guarantee them 8 games a year. That shouldn't be a problem with the number of non-conference games the Big Ten has right now, and I would think that ASU would be amenable to that (depending on how other conference negotiations go).

Almost everyone is done at end of February. Conference playoffs start in March.

ASU to WCHA. AAU rules or something prevent ASU from B1G Mistake. Heard the WCHA rumor yesterday from someone who's known in the business. I won't reveal the source.
