Arena organs in college hockey?

Re: Arena organs in college hockey?

Organs are great in both hockey and the baseball. College, not a lot of organs. Pep bands fill that void. Quite a few pep band are zany and can be extremely entertaining.

ND plays organ music over the sound system, particularly when the pep band isn't there.

That's exactly the pep band road trip I was mentioning earlier. Judging by the people in the photos (a couple of whom I recognize), it was longer ago than I thought. That was at Princeton though, right? Or am I getting that confused with another trip?

It may have been Princeton, but I thought it was Yale.

Re: Arena organs in college hockey?

I realize that most college hockey arenas utilize bands and piped-in recorded music primarily, but I was wondering if there any arenas out there that still have a live organist or use piped in organ music? You still hear these in pro hockey arenas quite a bit, but my guess is that it's pretty rare in college arenas, if at all.

Denver had an organ into the 1990s, but no longer does....Do any of your rinks use one for games?

Bands are way better anyway...

Re: Arena organs in college hockey?

I play keyboard at RMU...Well... it's a laptop keyboard, with organ clip sound bites ;)

Does that count?

Seriously, I love using the organ music at the barn. I use it mixed with regular "hockey music". The RMU Pep Band only makes it to a handful of games each year.

Re: Arena organs in college hockey?

I think at least one rink in the ECAC has one - I remember other members of the RPI pep band mentioning a road trip to an arena with an organ, but I missed the trip for some reason and can't remember where it was. I want to say it might've been Princeton, but I'm not positive... if it was, they didn't use it the one time I did make it there (December 2007, I think).

I think Yale has one, possibly Colgate as well?

Re: Arena organs in college hockey?

Ah, memories of the old D.U. Barn during my season ticket-holding days in the '80's and '90s! The little "cage" over the north end zone of the rink where the organist sat, with the occasional flinch when an errant shot rattled off the cage. The circus calliope-like sound of the organ when the DU fight song was played after goals scored. The chunky coed in the Boone costume who rarely completed a lap of the rink without taking a spectacular fall on her keester! The scoreboard at the north end where I can still close my eyes and see "BADGERS" being stomped out by electronic boots, before being replaced by a mocking electronic funny face! And, during the weaker years, seeing the board post, "O-NO-PIONEER POWER PLAY" and smirking at the unwitting irony of the board operator, since for a few years (Late Backstrom and early Frank Serratore) that PP was extraordinarily anemic! We all were going "Oh-No" too! The organist wasn't nearly as entertaining when moved to a little prison cell in the pressbox, out of the line of fire. But organ music at hockey is still something I miss. The Barn is gone, but memories linger. Glad I got my first chance to see games at the Magness last year on a visit to my old Denver haunts. Hoping the Pies have a successful season, and I can come to Ford Field in March to watch them in Frozen Four!

Re: Arena organs in college hockey?

Back from 2004 to 2007, there was a member of the Princeton Band who would go play a keyboard/organ (plugged into Baker Rink's speaker system) for games that the full Band couldn't make it to (typically because of a basketball game).

Since then, the rink announcer/DJ has some pre-recorded, baseball-style organ cheers that he plays (along with other piped-in music) for games the Band can't make it to.

Though nothing is better than having a live pep band at a game.

Re: Arena organs in college hockey?

During the first couple years of our pep band here at RIT they had a keyboard player who would throw on the organ effects and play some classic hockey stuff. We don't get it any more though now that the band has a decent selection of music to play and has gotten better. But I wish we still had some solid organ music. Nothing beats it.
