Alright, alright. It’s a niche market for private insurers in single payer, like cosmetic surgery. Basic healthcare in single payer countries is covered by the government, whether that’s UK-style, Canadian-style, or Australian-style. Single payer is always universal in nature. Universal healthcare is not necessarily single payer, and could be achieved with robust insurance companies, if we chose that route.

Sorry, that isn't clear at all is it.

I have a few concerns here:
  • Democrats bungling the messaging in general.
  • Potential for a "fine, f it, we're going to outlaw private insurance effective tomorrow because we think its our least bad option" and the resulting economic chaos that would bring... that would likely lead to many years of GQP electoral victories.
I think there's likely a place for private insurance, even in a single-payer system, but I absolutely haven't thought that through so don't come at me on it.

Gradually lower the age for Medicare/allow people to opt in to its coverage. Merge medicaid with Medicare. Keep private insurance for people who want extra, ala Medicare advantage plans.

More or less, my understanding is that for someone like me (Type-1 Diabetic), Single Payer will greatly cut back on the price gouging that goes on with "everyday" prescriptions like insulin that I need. Stuff like this is what is draining the finances of A LOT of people in this country.

Personally I'm at around $50k of out-of-pocket medical expenses since 2010. Not all of it is Diabetes related (About $9,000 is related to a broken left wrist in 2018), but its a vast majority of that.

Where the private insurance would come in would be for people who either want elective stuff (like cosmetic surgery) or for people who need everything ASAP and it needs to be "the best" (think athletes and their injuries). A small, but wealthy segment of the population. I think it's doable to give them an outside choice if they want to pay for it.

I think DGF has mentioned it before but going to universal care would be a boon to unions because they wouldn’t have to be constantly making concessions in order to keep health care benefits in negotiations.

UPS and the Teamsters are heading back to the negotiating table next week. Be interesting to see if they get a deal done in time.

There is a conspiracy theory abound that a deal has already been made but they're not announcing it so the union can go around and hold these big rallies and practice strikes to look strong and put more pressure on the Amazon organizing efforts.

Or the corporate class is a bunch of greedy idiots wildly out of touch with the rest of society.

Private insurance in this country would likely follow the design used by other nations. There is a base insurance that will handle all necessary medical procedures, but then if there’s a premium or “luxury” option to accomplish the same goal, private insurance would step in to pay the difference.

My friend spent a year abroad in Australia, and she needed medical care to the point of a serious surgery and almost two weeks in the hospital. Government insurance provided double rooms for recovery while privately insured people would be upgraded to single occupancy rooms.

One other benefit to single payer- small businesses. All the people who want to start a company don’t have to worry about getting sick, so they are far more likely to start one. As well as less likely to fail due to medical problems. Let alone having to deal with employees.

Single payer will be a huge benefit to the economy.

So it will save money overall, help the economy, and really help the overall health of the economy.

Too bad Ronnie said it was communism back when he was still an actor.

My driver only wants less hours, he has too many stops and doesnt get back to shop until 7 or 8 pm
7pm? Lucky guy. That’s one of main reasons I’m not a RPCD. I think there’s supposed to be stronger 9.5 protection language but I guess we’ll see.

My work days fluctuate between, I'm kicking butt, feel like a valued member of the management team and I can't keep up with emails let alone get half the work done, there's too much on my plate and my team is too small. Then I have the worst days where I feel like my mental capacity is slowly deteriorating to the point that I give a commit date to something while looking at a calendar, thinking that gives me just over a week to work on it only to find a day later someone sets me straight that next week is August and the date I gave is tomorrow.

anyone know of a quality engineer looking for a job in the ann arbor area? found someone I was ready to offer the position to, but as has been happening, his current company made him a better offer.

My boss might hate me, but I questioned the design engineering manager what the salary range is for his open position. I wouldn't mind a 10% or less paycut to be able to work from home 3 days a week. If I do find work elsewhere, it'd leave my manager with open positions at 4 of her 7 plants.

That's your employer's problem, not yours.

I'd say it's a very good thing to bring up to your employer right about now.

Extorting an extortionist is just good common sense.

My son-in-law found this out accidentally. He completely naively went into his company's senior leadership to tell them he was accepting another position, and they said "we know you're the only thing keeping us afloat so what if we double your salary and benefits and you can write your own job description and if there's anybody you don't like we'll get rid of them?"

He took the deal and learned a valuable lesson. Either they bend you over or you bend them over. There is no other outcome. That is the market. Don't treat your company or your boss or leadership as compatriots, they aren't. Under our system, they're parasites because they are forced to be. Dick them before they dick you. It's nothing personal, Sonny. It's business. Tell the kid I always liked him.

So, to keep with this subject matter...as I mentioned a few weeks back my team, my department and business - actually pretty much the entire company - was re-orged. I did not lose my job. Actually my whole team was fine. I just found out that two members of my team were promoted. They each posted on LinkedIn this afternoon. They are both in the office today and hadn't said anything, nor did my manager or head of our team make an announcement. I ran over to their desks to congratulate them. I am happy for both.

Here's my conundrum. I have told people I am not going to complain about lack of advancement. In fact, my job was downgraded three years ago and I didn't complain. It was at the start of the pandemic, people were losing work, etc. I didn't lose any salary but my earning ceiling was lowered. I am at the same grade level now as I was when I started here 23 1/2 years ago. Half of me is fine - I don't know if I want the responsibility of higher grade positions, you know? And I like what I do. And none of what I do has changed from when I was a higher grade (so the downgrade is kind of bullshite if you ask me). I keep my mouth shut and do my work. The other half of me, though, is getting increasingly annoyed at not even being given the chance to discuss. I know the two girls on my team work super hard and deserved it. I do also feel that neither of them bitched and complained to get promotions. One of them said she didn't even know she was getting promoted. However, why wasn't anything presented to me? I'm actually a little nervous about approaching the subject, wondering if I will hear that they don't think I'm up for the additional work and responsibilities. Part of me also thinks they stay quiet because I stay quiet. Honestly, I am not going to go anywhere. I am heading towards retirement soon. I don't have the wherewithal to look for something else. I'm frustrated and disappointed at not just the management team but also in myself for not having the spine to say something.

I got involved in a class action suit against Kronos (time clock company) for a data breach while I used their brand's time clock at work. 14 months after signing up, I finally got a settlement check. A cool $431. And all it took was having my biometric date (fingerprint) compromised, lol.

I mean, free money I suppose. But I also know that the lawyers made $TEXAS on this deal, so....

I really don't know how to feel about this. I mean it's free money. But I also realize I got played, so internally I'm kind of annoyed.

Such is life I suppose. Just cash the check and put the money to good use **shrug**
