Is that what happened here? If they did give him the gun obviously they would be liable but if he took it from them it’s on him.

If the parents can't secure their guns from their kid, then they can't keep them secure from anyone else who should not get the gun. They are liable either way.

Because they are parents, they are double liable, since it's their kid.

Stop making excuses in the idea that "nothing more can be done" because if that's the excuse, then it pretty much demonstrates that gun owners can't be responsible- and the 2nd amendment should be repealed.

They can't be responsible and it should be repealed. They've proven their irresponsibility over and over and over again.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with holding a gun owner liable if they’ve done something negligent but I doubt it happens very often. How successful are parents keeping liquor away from their kids? It’s the same idea with guns.

Minnesota Dram Shop laws hold parents responsible if their kids get drunk at home and drive and hurt someone. (underage of course)

Plenty of responsible gun owners never have kids get access to their guns. Plenty can be done and should be required under penalty of law to be done. Gun safes exist for a reason.

Parents, or homeowners, can be held civilly liable for damages if they either furnished the alcohol to the minor, or if they had control of the premises, were in a reasonable position to prevent the consumption of alcohol, and either knowingly or recklessly permitted the consumption and the consumption caused the intoxication of the person who drove the car.

A parent or guardian can be held criminally liable for furnishing or giving alcoholic beverages to a person under 21, unless it was done with the expectation that the alcohol would be consumed solely at home.

Death toll is up to 4.....

Lock up the shooter, sue the family into oblivion for not being responsible. Or just throw them all in jail.

One wonders why an idiotic parent would have a gun readily available for a 15 year old? Must be a complete fucking moron.

If the reports are true, it was not just available, it was gifted to him a few days ago. What makes them real rocket scientists, the local news is reporting his parents where called to the school due to threats he made. Yesterday morning. (if you are reading this late- that would be the morning of the shooting)

Give a kid a gun, and then not be overly concerned that he's making death threats. What amazing parents.

This was inevitable.

And another example of how gun owners can not deal with the responsibility of owning a deadly weapon.

MI Republicans have started their "freedom over safety" schtick, and Soldano is using the shooting to appeal to voters.

Wow, the bodies of the dead are not even in the ground. It's one thing for people to just talk about it, it's another for a politician to make it an issue to run on- supporting the rights to have the tools to murder people.
