Another hoops team in OK?? Are you serious??

Re: Another hoops team in OK?? Are you serious??

I would argue that the WNBA is better basketball then the NBA. Women actually run plays and pass instead of playing isolation one-on-one crap.

You can argue that, but you'd be wrong.

The NBA is crap, but the WNBA is beyond crap.

Re: Another hoops team in OK?? Are you serious??

This is the saddest day in this Forum's history. A WNBA-based thread?

You sicken me.

Re: Another hoops team in OK?? Are you serious??

Bottom line is both the teams will fail within the next 10 years. This is a fad that will get old, and people will stop showing up. The Tulsa "Shock" will start out with good numbers, but will see attendance drop before the end of their first season. Mark my words: Pro basketball in OK will fail.

Because she wore the pants in that relationship like any self-respecting lesbian would.

Heh. She looked alot like Tea Leoni, and generally wore skirts or dresses. The looks from some of the "Diesels" were pretty interesting. However, since this was in the days before iPods, etc., I usually brought along a copy of the Irish or Bermuda tax code for excitement. :D

Re: Another hoops team in OK?? Are you serious??

Tulsa metro area = 1,000,000 people and growing, most of whom have jobs.
Detroit = deserted wasteland of nothingness with massive unemployment.

You can argue there are better places than Tulsa to move to, but you can't really argue against it on a straight Tulsa-Detroit comparison.

Not really relevant considering that you followed up this gem by pointing out that the WNBA isn't really basketball. I think that is more to the point than anything.

Auburn Hills is near one of the wealthiest areas in the country (Oakland County-Bloomfield Hills, etc.) so, if you were speaking of inner city Detroit I would agree. Most of the inner city folk do not travel up to Auburn Hills to watch ball, as most of the fans are suburban folk that still have their corporate jobs. True on the vast unemployment in the area, though, but the Shock never drew when times were better, too. Not much publicity for a team that won three championships. I think this is why Laimbeer bailed (also b/c Davidson died) and handed the reins to his assistant, Rick Mahorn. BTW, I heard the Nolan Richardson will be the new coach.

Tulsa is indeed in the heart of oil country, but I doubt that has much bearing on the common people there. Just farmers and ranchers waiting for the next F5 to blow through after dealing with drought and 100 degree summers.

Re: Another hoops team in OK?? Are you serious??

All I ever needed to know about the WNBA came when a friend, his sister, and his dad went to a game in Cleveland when they walked up half an hour before the game and got fairly cheap tickets (less then $40) in the front row where they bring your beer to you.

I'm astonished that Stern keeps throwing money down the pit, considering his savvy about other things, though I guess he'd take some "political" heat for pulling the plug on the "girls".

Hell, I'm just glad they've cut back on the pushy advertising on this and the women's NCAA tournament. That got really old a few years back.

I've already told myself that I'm not taking any kind of ticket or cooperate sales job with a WNBA team... I honestly don't feel that I can sell that with a straight face...

I will admit, there is somewhat of a cult following that seems to be centered around the powerhouse NCAA Women's Programs... I know some people that went to Purdue and they are adiment supporters of the Indiana Fever as well as teams with various alumni... I also saw some support for Tennessee alums in Knoxville... I would imagine there would be similar support around UConn... There are small patches of loyal fans, so I do think that the league can be successful... The powers that be need to realize that this is NOT a national sport... It's a niche sport at best...

Which is exactly why a team in Tulsa could succeed.

Now, the WNBA is a different animal, but the original poster had to drag OKC and the NBA into it, too - which is a huge mistake IMO.

Streaker, it's not often that you and I agreen on things, but this statement is exactly what I had in my head, but didn't feel like taking the time to type out. The Pistons/Shock are not "Detroit". They are Detroit only in name.

Re: Another hoops team in OK?? Are you serious??

I really wanted to believe this theory because I love college hoops and hate the pros, so I gave them a try. It's awful. Dullness punctuated by fairly common abysmal play. It's just awful. Women's hockey is a hundred times better, and women's hockey is pretty bad.

I always thought women's basketball was designed for Civil Engineers. No, really, it makes sense - only people who like making bridges out of balsa wood and canoes out of concrete (the wrong materials for the job) would enjoy basketball teams made up of people who can't jump, shoot, or pass...

Why is that a mistake? Why is NOT a mistake to place a NBA team in OKC?

I just looked on their site, and season tix are currently $861.00 for pretty crappy seats. Given the fact that all sports teams are money grubbing whores, I'll just say that in 10 years those same seats will be $1200.00. I'll go ahead and and buy a 5 year CD right now, and renew it for another 5. I then go take that cash out in 2019.....Oh no! Why can't I find the OKC Thunder website? Oh, that's right...they don't exist anymore.

Again, they filled the place to 97.7% capacity last season to watch a horrible team (23–59).

I guess you'd also expect the Utah Jazz to fold, since SLC's metro area is actually smaller than OKC's.

Soemtimes it's good to be the big fish in the small pond.

I agree with some of your points, but the bolded statement is incorrect. OKC comes in at around 1.3 million while SLC is at 1.6/1.7 or 2 million for the entire Wasatch Front.

I thought part of the problem wasn't just attendance, but also media market. Its one reason moving to smaller Canadian metropolitan areas for the NHL (QC, Winnipeg) would be unwise decisions.

You sure about that?

OKC MSA: 1.26 million

SLC MSA: 1.15 million

Salt Lake's population along the Wasatch Front is indeed higher, but if you're going to go down that road, you might as well do the same for OKC and consider Tulsa part of their media market as well.

Anyway, this is all nitpicking, really. My point about the NBA is that they've got a track record of really succeeding in smaller markets.

Now, all else being equal, would you trade Seattle for OKC? No. But things are never equal...
