America's Cup

Anyone else following this? While it is a long way away from the sailing and racing most people do, it remains an amazing comeback story by Team Oracle. Down -2 to +8 they have scored 10 straight wins to be tied going to the final race this afternoon (if winds cooperate).

These machines they are driving are amazing too, although as I said not much like any other sailboat.

I've been watching off and on during the finals--mostly off. I don't like the class of catamarans they chose for this years AC. I guess I would have liked to see the more conventional "racing yacht." That's just me.

I find the America's Cup racing fascinating and look forward to it. I did not like the catamarans at first, but those things are pretty cool up out of the water like that. I've been digging around to try and find out what exactly Oracle did to get their boat to perform better.

Fired the coach for one thing. Changed Tacticians after going down 4-1 in races, I believe. Also at times started to go up on foils upwind which no one had done before. Clearly though they found some more boat speed somewhere.

Extraordinary comeback by Oracle. Time marches on, I suppose. But I miss the 12m boats.

Re: America's Cup

We were able to sneak down for the first weekend races. It was amazing to see them whipping by.

The crowd that first weekend was almost all Kiwis. Lots of bummed people wandering the streets tonight.

Re: America's Cup

In one of the earlier weather delays they broke down the "Sails" of these boats... The idea of using an airplane wing really caught my attention... Granted I'm someone who thinks the height of boating technology is a Ranger 621vs, ha ha :p Still held my attention for several days.. Just couldn't stay with it because of the constant weather delays though :(

Re: America's Cup

I caught some of the replay of yesterday's race last night. Those suckers are fast! Nothing like the old yachts.

All sails are wings - unless on a run dead downwind when they are kites. Some are just much more efficient airfoils than others. :)

30-40 knots into the wind... insane... i read somewhere a couple of the boats broke 50 knots.... i too prefer the traditional yachts, but every now and then, throwing something like this into the mix isn't a bad thing... you should check out team oracle's testing videos when they were burying the the bows and flipping the boats... insane....

Ellison made a good point about picking these boats for the challenge. If you want to get today's youth interested in sailing, you don't do it with a 12 meter, you need something fast and awesome looking. And these boats were all that.

I always have loved sailing multi-hulls anyway. Ever since my first ride on one and my buddy picked a hull up. A b**** to tack but so fun on a reach!
