Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Sam "The Great" Brittain is one of the 18 nominees for the inaugural Mike Richter Award, honoring the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men's hockey.

Among the other nominees are Aaron Crandall (Minnesota Duluth)and Ryan Faragher (St. Cloud State) from the NCHC as well as Jason Torf (Air Force).

First Star: Sam Brittain (Denver)
Second Star: Emil Romig (Denver)
Third Star: Will Butcher (Denver)

Honorable Mention to Gabe Levin who had DU's first shorthanded goal of the season.

Do you call this the Goal Cycle?
Even strength(Romig), Power Play(Butcher), Shorty(Levin), and Empty Net(Tabrum)

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Thoughts on next year's schedule anyone? Last summer, I was kind of disappointed in the schedule for this year; but looking back on it now, I feel differently. My hope is that now that everyone is over the realignment name calling, now you'll see some better pairings and travel. I've had my fill of east coasters and Ivy. No Tuesday nighters on the other side of the country, please. As far as non-NCHC dates, I would like to MSU, U of M, OSU, Notre Dame and probably the Goofers and Badgers, simply because of thier following. I'll take any NCHC teams. We fore sure need a home and away series with NoDak. But would DU be ready for a meaty schedule like that???

I know BC is coming in for homecoming weekend.

If DU can go 3-0 in their last 3 games, they are guaranteed to be hosting the first round of the NCHC playoffs.

Isn't either Minnesota or Wisconsin coming in for one game at DU and one at cc? I didn't mind the mid week game since it was part of a road trip and was over the Christmas break.

My pet peeve of the morning:

The Pioneers were playing without three players Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, B.C.), Josiah Didier (Littleton, Colo.) and Quentin Shore (Denver, Colo.) , each of which were out due to injury. denverpioneers.com
.
Somebody needs to take the Freshman writing course. The offending phrase "each of which were out due to injury"
The pronoun which refers to things, not people. The correct pronoun is whom.
Each is singular, not plural and uses a singular verb. In this case the correct verb is was.
Therefore the sentence should read: The Pioneers were playing without three players Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, B.C.), Josiah Didier (Littleton, Colo.) and Quentin Shore (Denver, Colo.) , each of whom was out due to injury.

Bravo.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

I hate to say this, but they played last night like they've thrown in the towel. No shots on goal during a major penalty is simply unbelievable.

Jeez, I miss the old WCHA. It doesn't seem right that UW didn't play DU this year. I haven't been able to get up for MI, MSU, OSU like I did for the WCHA. I just wanted to let you know....I miss you, man!!!:(

Pleasantries aside, how are you guys liking Will Butcher? I can't remember how hard "we" recruited him, but it was a huge loss for Eaves & Company considering UW's defensive player's accomplishments and Will living in UW's backyard.

Yeah, not quite the same without playing Wisconsin and Minnesota. It was always fun to have those teams in our barn. And it was good for attendance, too!

As to Butcher--I think people are pleased with his play. He has 7 goals, 5 assists, and is even on plus/minus. Not mind-blowing stats, but I've heard positive things about his vision and hockey sense. Seems to have a good match of skills and a head on his shoulders. He should have a very good year next year. Being drafted by the Av's might motivate him to play extra well, especially at home.

I still default to clicking on "WCHA" on various sites to check scores, news, and the like. I miss it more than I thought I would. Might feel differently if Miami and Western were doing a little better, but probably not.

Butcher is kind of going about as well as Wiercioch went for us :D, similar playing styles (though Butcher is probably a little better defensively).

Yeah, I hope we DU gets WI and MN back on the schedule as out of conference games. I know we have BC coming in for 2 next season. With this year's team being a transition of coaches, it should have been good that both Alaska teams, Canisius, Niagara, Brown, AF, RPI, UMass and Merrrimack were on the schedule as out of conference opponents. Had this been a typical Gwoz team, I would have expected DU to go something like 10-2. DU ended up going 6-3-3 with losses to both Alaska teams and Canisius. They tied AF, RPI and Brown. The team is 15-13-6 overall and 9-10-3 in the NCHC. 20 wins is going to be tough to get. It will have to take a sweep against Miami this weekend , two wins in the first round of the NCHC playoffs and at least one win in the Target Center. DU is still alive for a home series in the first round but they have to sweep Miami and get some help. Realistically, DU is going to have to win the NCHC playoffs and get the autobid to go to the NCAAs as they sit at #26 in PWR. Monty said in his post-game that Didier and Leggs are possibilities for this coming weekend but Q is definitely out. Will has been a solid frosh D-man who has contributed at both ends of the ice. He is far from being ready for the pros and I expect at least 3 years out of him at DU. With Makowski graduating and Didier and Leggs likely headed to the pros, a lot more will be expected of Will next season. Nolan Zajac will be the only upperclassman with more experience than the current frosh D-men.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Now that the team enters that portion of the regular season schedule during which it plays seven of eight games on the road, it has the chance to show if it is a group of Road Warriors or tire-treaded roadkill.

Denver has completed that portion of its regular season schedule in which it played seven of eight games on the road. The team went 2-4-1 in this stretch. There were twenty-one points at stake in these games and Denver earned seven [.333] and lost its only home game. In a word, Denver was unimpressive. During this stretch the team clearly was roadkill and did nothing to clinch home ice for the playoffs. Entering its series this weekend with Miami the Pioneers need help from NoDak and/or Duluth to secure home ice for the playoffs. I'll be in attendance at both games this coming weekend to see Sam Brittain and David Makowski play what I certainly believe will be the last home games of their careers.

With 15 wins to this point in the regular season the Pioneers are going to finish precisely where I thought they would: with 14 to 17 regular season victories. The Pioneers have neither surprised me with their lackluster play nor any sustained stretch of excellent play. This team is the picture of an "also ran."

When this season concludes it will be the third consecutive season in which the Pioneers have been outshot by their opponents. This is one aspect of the team's play which I hope changes beginning with the 2014-2015 season.

Your analysis has been spot on all season long, more's the pity. As I indicated earlier, the eye opening moment for me came Saturday night: a major penalty with no shots on goal. Perhaps I should have snapped to the reality earlier, I guess I'm just a DU Pollyanna. It doesn't really matter how this thing plays itself out. Whether DU backs in to home ice in the playoffs or not. And how they do in the playoffs. What's important is this season brings back memories of the Dark Period, (after Murray and before Gwoz). And we don't want to go back there. Let's just hope this is a bump in the road and not a precursor.

On the positive side of things, Mrs. Shot and I returned earlier this afternoon from three glorious days of skiing at Breck. Snowed all three days we were on the slopes. With goggles fixed in place, we cruised the bumps and the groomers while enjoying the powder.

Also on the positive side: we've sh*t canned Boone, still display a jelly donut in our locker room and still haven't honored our hockey immortals. You can't say DU doesn't honor its traditions. Because ignoring those traditions is a tradition.

A long regular season is coming to a close this weekend. I simply can't remember, but has there been a Senior Night this season? If not, are there plans to recognize Brittain and Makowski before the start of the series on Friday night?

One assumes Saturday night.
