Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

For better or for worse, here are my shots of the Friday CC @ DU game at Magness. You can see them by clicking HERE!
The worse--too much tiggie black
The better--another good portfolio
The best--#13 Brittain in the crease and Tabrum in the net and #33 not sure how to caption this pile up/totem pole

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

According to Monty DU will be missing 4 regulars in the line-up this weekend. I count 3 with Q, Leggs and Hawkinson. Anybody have an idea who the 4th is?

Edit: Chambers says its Didier. Ruh roh

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

We can agree to disagree. Mistakes are made in recruiting. The players I named were all recruited during George Gwozdecky's tenure. Those players haven't produced on the ice. Jim Montgomery is under no obligation to compound recruiting mistakes made by Gwozdecky by continuing to play the players or keep them on scholarship.

Absent some behavioral or academic justification, DU should never renege on its commitment to a recruit. If a kid turns out to be a "bust" then we just have to live with it.

I bet (with no research basis) that it's more often the case that the player decides to go elsewhere for better fit or mostly more ice time, rather than a program yanking the rug out from under him.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

I'm not sure what the standard practice in the industry is when it comes to new coaches de-committing players or removing scholarships. Obviously, we haven't had this situation in Denver in the last two decades (pre-my time). I would agree that Gwoz barely ever did this (if at all). I can't recall an instance. But, Monty does seem to be "cleaning house" after taking over, or previously committed players have opted to renege. Commitments are different than LOI's (not sure where "morality" begins), but here is a list of commitments from DG's blog dated May 10, 2013 right after Monty took over:

2014 Recruiting Class Updated Stats
F Tyler Pham (Indiana Ice, USHL) - 46 games, 4 goals, 13 assists
F Jared Fiegl (U.S. Under-17) 44 games, 4 goals, 9 assists
F Garrett Gamez (Tri-Cities, USHL) 30 games, 6 goals, 5 assists
F Cody DePourcq (Penticton, BCHL) - 49 games, 11 goal, 8 assists

2015 Recruiting Class Updated Stats
F Dylan Gambrell (Dubuque, USHL) 45 games, 5 goal, 19 assists

2016 Recruiting Class Updated Stats
F Troy Terry (Thunderbirds, AAA) 41 games, 14 goals, 35 assists

I believe the entire 2014 class is busted, while Gambrell (notably from Dubuque) and Terry remain. Also, I did not list the 2013 recruits that DG had, of which Landon Smith and Ray Pigozzi won't make it to DU. My uneducated take is that coaches only have a moral obligation to players they personally offered scholarships to, and vice a verse for the players. Also, Miller leaving even further distances Monty from the old recruits.

DU men's hoop on Fox Sports tonight if anyone cares. 8PM Eastern Time.. On Fios, it's either 300, 301, or 302. Direct and Dish also get it for sure among others.

Danton Heinen ‏@DHeinz43 8h
Excited to announce my commitment to Denver University. Thanks to everyone who has supported me along the way. #pioneers

That's a real solid pickup for Denver. 9th leading scorer in the BCHL with 29 goals and 33 assists in 57 games. 6'0 160 pounds. All this as an 18 year old this year.

I certainly agree to disagree. No coach has to keep any player. Scholarships are year to year. Montgomery is not obligated to keep anyone. However, there can be big differences between what you can do and what you should do. Coaches that usher players (that have worked hard and been good teammates and students) out the door are scummy.

there a couple scumbags out there that do that. the class coaches though dont. might be blunt and explain the lay of the land, thus forcing there hand. good coaches develop, bad ones pull their schollys.

players also have the right to appeal to a board made up of all faculty, no one from athletic dept. this is first year only.

ncaa needs to address this and it looks like they are. a coach can leave. a school, get a big raise and start coaching next day. players are stuck. new coach can come in, pull scholarship for no reason and if they leave have to sit out a year. if anyone thinks ncas is about the kids they are wrong

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Here are the stats on new recruit forward Danton Heinen. This is his first year in Surrey in the BCHL, not sure when he will be coming to DU. Not yet listed on Heisenberg or College Hockey Inc. 62 points in 57 games so far this season and is 9th leading scorer in the league. I could see him coming next season with DU's need for scoring forwards.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

I am too, I just don't see it happening under any circumstances. This past weekend was the nail in the coffin for me, sorry. I am not a fair weather fan, I have been passionate about the Pioneers since 1976. I just want the season to be over. Finally, Old Pio and BigBossMan, can you guys call a truce? We have better things to talk about!!

Oh sure the season thus far has been disappointing. To say the least. But ... Monty has been building a tournament team. All Monty's efforts have been toward developing a team the can win the big games when it really counts. So the next couple of weekends are just practice. Getting the boys tuned up and ready to play in the big games when it really matters ... at tournament time!

I guess playing for the Gold Pan isn't a big game that really counts. Or at home against #2. Or at home against arguably the most heated rival of late.

I don't consider this all that disappointing a season compared to expectations- and what you can demand of a new coach- but this team is not trending towards a tournament run. Not even a conference tournament run.

Montgomery seems as committed to developing players as any coach could be. He speaks often of the process and that it takes time to get all the pieces just right.

I think we will have some very good teams under Montgomery in about 3 years. Until then, probably upper mid-pack teams. Maybe one tourney appearance?

It's been a long time since 2005, no? I remember after the repeat titles thinking it was reasonable to expect one every few years. Yeah...not so much anymore. Makes you appreciate the magic and good times of Boston and Columbus, though. As the sign said in Boston: "By George, we did it!"
