Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Great effort by DU. Sam was obviously outstanding. His control of the puck and rebounds was phenomenal. Credit the d-men, too, as Sam seemed to see every shot, and I don't recall a single odd man rush by nd. Lastly, when was the last time we had 3 goals all scored by forwards? Encouraging. Good recovery night all around for DU.

Sigh. Bad refs and shytty ice. What are you gonna do?

Backstopped by Brittain's terrific performance, DU got the job done last night. Better effort, better compete level=better result. UND played well both nights, but the Pioneers did what they needed to do to get a W last night. Brittain saw a lot of rubber, but they key was he saw it.

UND, as usual, was impressive. They have talent, depth, good puckhandlers, and play hard.

Only 10 games left in the regular season, 7 of which are on the road. This stretch should go a long way in helping the Pios get ready for the postseason.

Looks like my fear of Brittain stealing a game from us came true Saturday night, the guy is good. Hope to see you guys in the Frozen Faceoff in Minneapolis.

You can't stand around and watch in your defensive zone against a team that skates as hard as UND. DU did a lot of that on Friday. Every aspect of DU's game was better on Saturday. Which isn't to say that the Fighting North Dakotas played worse- they certainly didn't. Had Sam not been seeing the puck so well, it may have been a 2-1 game or something like that, but the team earned it, too. The quality of shots was down for UND from Friday, which points to better movement in the D zone. It was one of the best quality hockey games (both ways) I've seen in a long time.

Glad we don't meet again in the regular season, the fka Sioux are in typical second half form.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Looks like Matt Donovan headed back to Bridgeport as Lubomir Visnovsky is coming off IR today.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

I like how Monty took responsibility for the egg..

"We couldn't get anything going," DU coach Jim Montgomery said. "North Dakota was well prepared, and I didn't prepare our team well enough to have success (Friday night). And we're going to have to be better at that (Saturday)."

"Our players have to bring some energy and emotion to the game. You play this game without emotion and you end up getting dominated in face- offs, footraces and body contact. There were a lot of crimson pants on the ice compared to green."

I don't agree with Chamber's headline that the egg was solely laid due to special teams--it was as both quotes from Monty state, it was an all around weak effort.

@22 in the Pairwise, DU has a long way to go and a short time to get there. This team is blessed with a ton of talent and Monty did a great job of getting his team headed in the right direction on Saturday. Let’s hope that direction continues. Let’s Go DU!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

On an intermittently snowy, cloud covered day in Denver, I thought I'd stick my head in those clouds in search of a silver lining regarding the remainder of Denver's regular season schedule.

Following this week's open weekend Denver plays two at Saint Cloud, then two at Nebraska-Omaha, then a home/home with CC, then two at Western Michigan and then finishes the regular season schedule with two at home versus Miami of Ohio.

The bad news. Seven of Denver's next eight games are on the road. Road warriors or roadkill, which will Denver be? That's a brutal piece of scehduling for a team which has only won four road games thus far. Two of those games are against Nebraska-Omaha, a team which swept the Pioneers earlier this season by matching 3-2 overtime scores.....with Josh Archibald scoring the game winner both times. If the games go to overtime in Omaha, I hope coach Montgomery has someone give Archie the "shadow" treatment. With the exception of Saint Cloud none of the teams Denver will face is in a position to help the Pioneers improve their PWR much. Solely from that standpoint, the games versus St. Cloud are vital to DU's chances to make the NCAA tourney. Yes, Denver could win the NCHC post-season event, but right now I'm not hanging my hat on that possibility.

The good news. None of the teams on the remainder of DU's regular season schedule has won more games than the Pioneers--Saint Cloud has won 13 contests to match Denver's total. Denver has played ten games against these five opponents and won 5 times, lost 4 times and tied 1 game versus CC before winning the shootout for an extra point. As of this posting three of DU's next five opponents have losing records on the season: CC 3-17-4; Neb-O 9-11-2 and Miami 10-11-3. Neither CC nor Western has beaten Denver this season. Frankly, in its first year of existence none of the teams in the NCHC has yet proven itself to be a legitimate threat to win this year's NCAA tourney. Home ice is hanging in the balance for many of the team's in the conference--including Denver. If Denver scores three or four goals in any game the team has an outstanding opportunity to win given the likelihood that Sam Brittain will hold the opposing team at bay.

I'm not overly impressed by a team's non-conference wins, at home, early in the season because it isn't abundantly clear at that point who the contenders and pretenders are. I am far more impressed by how a team plays on the road, late in the season, against teams in its conference as those are likely to be the teams a squad needs to beat to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament. The final ten games of the regular season give Denver a clear opportunity to show if it's a legitmate contender or pretender once the post-season arrives.

My $.02.

The first part of the season 3-7-0 (4 OT losses), will be hard to overcome.
