Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Just a little side note. Today would have been Jimbo's 70th birthday. I have been thinking about him alot today....wondering what his thoughts would be with all the changes surrounding the program...

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Jim Montgomery‏@DUCoachMonty28 Jun
Good luck to Pioneers @QShore27 @WillButcher4 @t_moore8 @NHL draft. Enjoy&learn from the experience and ur journey 2 NHL has just begun

Good luck to Evan Cowley too. Don't think Coach can mention his name since he hasn't signed.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Drew Shore is 1 of 8 centers currently on the Florida Panthers roster.
6 of the 8 are 1st round picks. Drew and 1 other were 2nd round picks.
Only 1 of the Panther centers is 30 or over.
1 center was on injured reserve last year.
There are currently 16 forwards on the roster--50% are centers.

Panthers defense was terrible. Seth Jones was available.
And the first round pick this year is another center.

Does this seem odd to anybody, but me? And what does this mean for Drew?

Update: Florida did draft a D Man,with the 1st pick in the 2nd round

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Chris Peters of The United States of Hockeymade some picks to watch at the draft today.

Honorable Mention
Will Butcher — D — U.S. National Under-18 Team: Butcher is a high-level offensive defenseman, who distributes the puck well ...

Other Notables
Evan Cowley — G — Wichita Falls Wildcats: For the second straight year, the most intriguing American goalie prospect will be coming out of the North American league.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Round 4 #92 Florida Panthers pick DU recruit Evan Cowley Goalie
Round 5 #123 Colorado selects incoming DU freshman Will Butcher Defense

Round 6 #168 Ottawa Senators select Quentin Shore Center University of Denver
The 3rd Subban brother was drafted today as was the 3rd Shore brother. No more bros for Subban. but a 4th possibility for the Shores.;)

Q to Ottawa in 6th round #168
Really happy for Q.
Congrats to all three draftees. Remember boys, at least 3 years at DU!

BTW
Round 3 #74 Chicago At age 5 John Hayden, became a Denver Junior Pioneer. Think we can clairm him as the 1st Pioneer drafted this year:D
( Even though Hayden will play at Yale next year.)

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Cowley coming to DU this year. He as originally slated for 2014/15 but he met with Monty a few weeks ago and they moved him up to this season. Video of him after being drafted yesterday. Select the interview with Cowley at the link.

Comes across as a great kid. Interesting that Gwozdecky & Co. originally recruited him, and it appears that Montgomery & Co. closed the deal.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

I don't know that it was Gwozdecky and Co - I think it was Steve Miller and David Lassonde ;) How cool is it, that we have 2 Panthers goalies!!! It's kind of awkward how Cow himself is the one who broke the silence and "officially" came out and said he was headed to DU; everything else I've seen on him said nothing about it. I think our goalie situation is going to be better that most people expect.

Me too. We all miss his insight and supreme decency.

...and both were taken 92nd overall in their respective drafts....the only DU goalie I can think of that was drafted higher was Bryan Schoen, who was taken 91st overall in '89 or '90...I believe these 3 goalies are the only true freshman goalies DU has had, at least in my time, with Chris Olson possibly having been one as well.

Yeah. To be honest, he was a WCHA guy through and through. I'm pretty sure he would have been quite conflicted about the whole NCHC move. Yet, obviously being the diehard DU supporter he was he would have accepted and embraced it by now.

Off the top of my head I can think of one other; Pete LoPresti came right from Eveleth High School in 1972-73.

Yeah I miss trading stories with him and the good banter. I think he would agree with me that the best incarnation of the WCHA was when it was a 10 team league in the 1970s with DU, CC, UND, MN, UMD, ND, MI, MSU, MTU and WI. I would say the 2nd best line-up was when it was in its 2nd 10-team incarnation with DU, CC, UND, MN, SCSU, MSUM, UMD, MTU, WI and UAA.

I can guarantee he would agree with this. We talked a lot about this era, which I technically witnessed some of but I was waaaay to young to have much recollection. I know you would know which year, but one of his all-time favorite games ever came from this era, which was either the '75 or '76 NCAA Championship game at the old barn between Tech and Minny...seemed like it was an amazing (and amazingly rough) game.

Yep, Minny beat Tech in '76 in the old barn. I was there along with your dad. That was the infamous Final Four with the fight between Minny and BU in their opening game. Very physical play in that Final Four. That Minny team had future NHL brawler Russ Anderson on it along with dynamic players Joe Micheletti, Tom Vannelli, Reed Larson, Bill Baker, Warren Miller, Don Madson and Tom Younghans, among others. And of course it was John MacInness versus Herb Brooks as the coaches. MTU was led by Mike Zuke, George Lyle, Stu Ostlund and Jim Mayer.

Although Minny had a tough team, CC had 3 of the top 6 PIM guys in the WCHA in Jim Warner and Greg Smith tied at #2 (123 minutes each) and Dean Magee at #6 (104 minutes).

Unfortunately for DU, they did not have a good season that year but bounced back in 76/77 and of course had the great 77/78 team two years later.
