Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Current USHL standings. Dubuque is leading the pack.

FWIW, former DU player Mark Falcone (sits on Board of Directors of Mn Wild) along with his brother Phil (Harvard player, CEO of Harbinger Capital & part owner of MN Wild) and Pete Chiarelli (Harvard player & current GM of the Boston Bruins) are some of the owners of Dubuque. There is a DU connection through Mark.

FWIW, and it probably isn't much, Pete Chiarelli's father Frank was an All-American in RPI's 1954 championship season. He still is RPI's career scoring leader. He scored 55 goals as a freshman in 18 games in 51-52. http://www.augenblick.org/rpi/h_02sc.html

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Won't be disappointed wit Monty. Was Asst. here in Troy for our great coach Seth Appert. Great hockey guy. Should have never fired Gwoz.
You are correct:

  • Never should have fired Gwoz
  • Seth Appert has made his mark at RPI and is appreciated by the administration.
  • If Monty is the man and as you say a great hockey guy, can only hope he proves you right at DU.
  • :o Appert and Gwoz have great hair. We'll have to count on Monty to shine:D

The following may not amount to a hill of beans, but...

Will Butcher, a talented defenseman, has commited to D.U. Upon further investigation, when Butcher played for Dubuque in the 2010-2011 season--albeit just two games--his coach was Jim Montgomery.

...;)

To take it a step further Montgomery is currently coaching DU recruit for 2016-16 Dylan Gambrell.

If the reports are true, you got yourselves a good coach and you will enjoy the style of game he will bring.

Glad to hear that about Gambrell. Always nice to have some continuity in coaches and players following each other from outpost to outpost. ;)

Amazing how things kind of come full circle. Great example of networking

Monti is a great coach. Enjoy him while you have him, cause after a couple of years success at DU, he will be off to the bigs.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Nick Shore going straight to the big club in LA with the Kings willing to burn a year of his contract. Tough to turn that offer down.

UNH fans will remember his final shot as a college player (it wasn't a shot on goal).

At the top of my "wish list" for the next DU coach is his bringing a goalie with him to the program. With Juho Olkinoura having signed with Winnipeg just days ago, the lone goalie currently in the DU program is senior-to-be Sam Brittain.

With sophomore defenseman Scott Mayfield having signed with the Islanders, Olkinoura having signed with Winnipeg and Nick Shore--who would have been a senior--signing with the L.A. Kings, Denver's next coach will have plenty of scholarship assistance available to bring in/offer to a goalie candidate.

It sounds as though it is a "fait accompli" that Jim Montgomery is the next D.U. coach. I hope he can "cherry-pick" one of the USHL's top uncommited goalies and bring him to Denver. Such a kid would have an immediate chance to play in the 2013-2014 season, likely as Brittain's back-up. Additionally, such a kid would get a head start on becoming Denver's #1 goalie in the 2014-2015 season. Again, this is just from my "wish list," but if Montgomery is coming to Denver I think a USHL goalie [and his family] would listen intently to an overture from Montgomery given his coaching record in the USHL and the quality of education the young man would receive at DU, not to mention having the opportunity to play in what should be a competitive new conference.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Finally. Now thank heavens we can all get back to the off season talk, wishing and speculation like we normally do here, and get ready for New Brunswick! How many more days?

The Pioneer Hockey Awards evening in a couple weeks should be kind of strange. Changes are a-comin boys

Any thoughts on who will be Montgomery's Captain? I'll go with Makowski or Doremus; one or the other, not both - please.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

With some significant graduation losses, combined with the early departures of Mayfield, Shore and the goalie (whose name I won't even attempt to spell), do DU fans see next season as sort of a rebuilding year, or are there enough good young players on the roster who can lift their games a bit and give DU the firepower it needs to truly compete?

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

I suppose that none of us envisioned Jim Montgomery leading DU into the NCHC transition. I hope this is a good hire for the program.

Obviously bringing in a goalie will be a priority for him. With Brittain having previously shown the ability to carry the load, maybe a top end goalie isn't a necessity right now. Yet, Sam does have an injury history.

I have to wonder, though, about how he feels about being handed a staff. Can Montgomery work well with Miller, Lassonde and Tenzer? Would he prefer his own guys? Does he defer to the current players in choosing captains? Or combine their thoughts with the assistants he was handed?

No matter what, next season will be an interesting one...for a variety of reasons...

I plan on burning an effigy of you, asshat. If that's not the answer you are looking for, then I don't apologize.

Quite. I have no idea what the expectations, or even the reasonable hopes, will be next year. Will winning the NCHC be a reasonable hope? Home ice advantage in the first round? Continuing the run of NCAA tourney appearances? Just finishing with a winning record? Avoiding the basement?

I feel like as long as we have Brittain, we should be able to avoid the basement, and it's pretty hard to accept that home ice in the first round isn't reasonable. I guess we'll just have to see how the season starts again, just like this year.
