All Things Denver--XXXV

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

I'm a bit surprised at the timing, but I am not disappointed with his departure. GG had terrific success in winning back-to-back titles with Denver and helped direct the team to the NCAA tourney more often than not. Recent early-round losses in the NCAA tourney may have been a factor in his departure. Good luck to him wherever he lands.

I expect there to be many applicants for this coaching position.

I think the players are probably in obsolute shock. As I am at the moment.
Gotta agree .... Personally, I think its an incredibly dumb move...a la the firing of Howland at UCLA. All these guys did was run very successful, clean programs that won a huge amount of games. If DU slides over the next few years, Pio fans won't need to look far for the culprit.

Wow...he has exhibited some odd behavior this season ( starting with fielding an incomplete roster) but I did not expect this...

Obviously our verbal commits could be open for poaching and the LOI-signed guys could possibly seek releases, though when Gwoz came from Miami he made sure his recruits stuck with Miami inspite of his departure, so I hope he takes the same position now.
This is different. They'll have a chance to revoke their letter if they want. They're committed to playing for him, Moreso than DU.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Cary Eades--had to look up who he was. A North Dakota assistant who was recently let go as part of a restructuring?? Hardly seems like an "A" candidate, but maybe I am missing something.

Seth Appert would be a good choice. As would Rico Blasi, but I doubt that DU could pry him away from Miami.

It's shaping up to be an interesting off season, that's for sure. I sure hope Peg knows what she is doing with this decision. I give her the benefit of the doubt, but hopefully she can clarify what really happened.

Wisconsin fires Eaves and Gwoz steps in. The fit is great. Gwoz doesn't have to face his old team and he's now in the bigs with a nearly limitless budget. I see it happening.

Cary Eades will probably apply but I don't see him getting the job in any way, shape or form.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

I hear Gwoz is going to the ECAC. Don't know what school yet.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

I think this makes sense in some ways. It seems reasonable to believe that a rift may have been forming. Whatever happened today, I would say Gwoz is the most successful coach in the country over the past 19 years, bar Jerry York. On the other hand, perhaps it's not a coincidence that DU has had very little success in the NCAAs in the era of being able to recruit NHL-caliber players. The team has really only been getting those serious blue-chippers since their '04 national championship, and since '05 they have only one win in the tourney I think?

Anyway, obviously everyone will have great memories of Gwoz's time at DU. Undoubtedly head and shoulders above the success of any coach we've ever had not named Murray Armstrong, and I really hope that whoever we get next (and Chris, I agree that Miller is probably not likely, but you definitely are in a better position to know these things than I anyway) is in the same league.

Edit: I seem to remember a rumor that Wisconsin approached Gwoz asking him to interview the last time they had an opening, and he declined to interview, said he wasn't interested. Am I imagining that?

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Blasi obviously has a connection to DU and he would be welcomed, though I don't see him leaving Miami. Motzko has a good thing going though the DU job has to pay more than SCSU, so possibly.
Motzko is reportedly making $167k, and I would expect him to get a raise after this season. Add in that SCSU is his alma mater and I don't see him leaving for 221k.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Seems like they should be able to put up more than Mel Pearson's $275k salary at Michigan Tech.

New (first/2nd year) coaches at SLUt and Clarkson. Top tier coaches (still playing as of yesterday) at Quinny, Union, Yale. That'd leave only Cornell, Brown, RPI, Colgate, Harvard, Dartmouth and Princeton.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

It will be very sad to not see two what seems to be very close people face off against each other in December. :(
