All Things Denver--XXXV

On a side note...I think I have to say that I would take Todd Anderson anytime over those ccha hacks we got stuck with today.

Nick Shore deserved a penalty but I'm not sure a game misconduct was warranted and how it went down was just plain whack. Penalties are to be called on the ice only. The linesmen have every right to conference with the refs if they missed what should have been a major but replay is not an option. No one could convince me that they used replay to identify Nick as it was on open ice hit and not a scrum with multiple bodies flying everywhere. However, I don't believe the situation altered the outcome so it is what it is.

I was center ice directly behind the Denver bench and saw it as it happened. It looked like it could have been 2 for contact to the head, but having watched unh all year I actually thought goumas was going to get the embellishment, as i feeI he has exaggerated hits throughout the year. couldn't believe they reviewed it and that it was a major. Tough call against Denver, but they did well to it to give themselves a chance.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

It may have not altered the outcome but it took DU's #1 player out of the game, forced DU to expend 5 minutes killing a penalty in the 3rd period with them down and made Gwoz have to change is lines. It pretty much ended the game earlier in the 3rd than normal when a team is down.
Shore took himself out of the game with his hit (and took Goumas out with him, and maybe for more than just this game.) The whistle should have been blown, and wasn't. To say that Shore didn't deserve the call because of bad officiating (i.e., no whistle) is to say head injuries are OK, as long as the ref didn't call a penalty.

Whether it was or wasn't intentional, only one player -- Shore -- knew of the impending collision. Goumas was hit in open ice, while looking away from his opponent and was thus unaware and vulnerable. Head injuries make these sorts of situations different.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

As dirty a play as I have ever seen in college hockey. So you are upset with the refs?

Sorry example of play by Denver; Goumas, our top player out with a concussion, as is Downing, who was hit after the whistle. Can't have much sympathy for you guys.

Not asking for sympathy just some decent reffing. They should have made a call and didn't. You don't fix your screw-up by going to a video replay. Also I have seen a lot dirtier hits than that one. I never want to see anyone hurt. In 3 years I can't remember Nick Shore ever getting thrown out of a game.

I agree it should have been a penalty. The refs should have called it but they didn't. Questionable if it was a major. They didn't call it and screwed up. Dave Starman is getting a full explanation on the call from the NCAA and will have it tomorrow.

What??? Goumas hit the ice and didn't as much as twitch for several seconds. He then tries to rise, and drops again. He looked unconscious to me. Did you watch Goudreau last week get the boot for the hit on the BU player (Rodriguez, IIRC)against the boards (which looked harmless to me)? Rodriguez looked hurt, and the call was upgraded to a misconduct against Goudreau. Rodriguez came back out to play regular shifts afterward. That hit was nothing compared to what Shore did to Goumas.
Brutal.

.

Got it, but all we want is decent reffing; they should have made the call without the replay, and decent reffing would have done that; so the replay did not really cost you; decent reffing would have made the call without the replay.

Who were these guys? From what league? They were less than impressive.

It's not questionable at all. Contact to the head penalties are a major point of emphasis this season, and I believe they are also automatic majors with discretion for Game DQ. When your first point of contact on a defenseless player is their head, you get tossed. They are calling it "targeting". I couldn't tell you why they didnt see/call it the first time around, but regardless of how they got there, they got it right in the end.

My understanding is that they were from the CCHA. They blew whistles when the puck wasn't covered and still in play. They were bad all around. Given all that, UNH beat DU soundly. They took advantage of DU's dumb penalties and once again, like in November, used the stretch pass to take advantage of the aggressive play by DU's D.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Gwoz's post game interview. He addressed the Shore penalty at the end of the interview. The refs called no penalty. At the stoppage in play, the refs conferred with the linesman who called the penalty. He never mentions if the linesman ever raised his hand to call the penalty. The review was to determine who made the hit on Goumas. If the penalty was called, it was the right thing to do. Still hard to believe that neither ref saw the hit and called a penalty as Goumas had the puck.

Goumas, Downing questionable for Northeast Regional Final against UMass Lowell

Coach Gwozdecky said he was proud of team, seniors, said it was a unique group. He said linesman was the one who called the penalty or that was explanation he got in post game presser.

And DU's #1 player took UNH's #1 player out with a cheap shot. Shoddy way to come by it but they got the call right. The officiating was awful both ways last night.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

I don't think linesmen typically raise their arm to call a penalty, but I'm not sure. Anyway, if that's what happened, kudos to the linesman for having the balls to speak up and tell what he saw. In the end, they got it right. As my girlfriend said to me on replay, "the ref had a great view of it...how did he not see that?"

The linesmen don't raise their arm, they are just allowed (after play has stopped) to tell the refs what they saw. Besides icing and offsides, about the only time you will see a linesman raise his arm is for a delayed too many men call which is really the one penalty they are allowed to call outright. For a few years, back before the current 2 ref system, the linesmen were upgraded to "assistant refs" (or AR's) and were allowed to raise their arm and call basically anything.

I was typing on my phone so I couldn't go too in depth so let me clarify. When it originally happened I thought Goumas was trying to sell it, he's done it a few times this year and its one aspect of his game I dislike. My buddies and I even commented on how slow the athletic trainer was getting out to him. It was fresh ice so he had to be careful crossing, but I get the impression that they initially thought he was selling it as well. I agree it should have been a penalty, and question why one wasn't called initially, only once the aftermath was seen did they decide to review it. Obviously once Goumas didn't return it was clear it was a serious hit and that he wasn't faking.

Two former Pios face off tonight in the Battle for Ontario,
Sens' Patrick Wiercioch and Leafs' Tyler Bozak.
Yes, they did play together one year at DU.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Congratulations to the DU team on another really good season. At the end of the day, in a "rebuilding" year they had another 20 win season and got to the NCAA tournament again. That's a major accomplishment and one I think we would have been happy with before the season started. Although, the frustration of another first round exit (5 out of last 6 years and being the higher seed almost every time), getting trounced by UND the one year we did get past the first round, and not even making the tourament the 2 years after the titles, is undeniable. I guess all we can do at this point is look forward to next year where we should have some great recruits coming in and, of course, pray we don't have too many players leave early over the summer. Hope everyone has a good summer and see you in October.

And UNH fans, great game by your team last night and sorry to hear about the injuries. As fans, I think we all straddle the line of wanting to see our team play tough and physical, without having any injuries to the opposing side. It's a shame you won't have two of your best players today and I wish you the best of luck being shorthanded.
