Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Umm, tomorrow night is the home opener. Good luck getting anybody who wants to go to a sporting event to go to anything else! Besides, at least until tomorrow, the Rockies are a playoff contender.

Umm, no yourself. The opener for the Rockies is tomorrow afternoon, not night. Plenty of time to catch both the 2:10 afternoon game at Coors and then the lacrosse game at Barton. As I plan to do.

Oh I suppose that's true that you could do both. But that's ambitious. Better take the train. :)

Yeah, I guess everyone is a playoff contender right about now, except maybe the Marlins.

Talking about baseball...In about 45 minutes, my Red Sox will continue their season-opening beat down of the Yankees...just thought I'd throw that out there for DU78. :)

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Look, here's what's going to happen. DU will eventually pick a new mascot. And we will accept it. Because the new mascot didn't cause this mess. And because we want the mascot to be successful. That's not to minimize our feelings of disappointment and betrayal, we're fully justified. But at the end of the day, we're Pioneer (or whatever's coming) fans. That's the bottom line.

If you're going to quote me to make some titanic point, I'd appreciate quotation marks and attribution.

Nothing. Any more than a Sioux guy dressing up like a Sioux guy offends Sioux guys. But if that's not okay, we have to be consistent, and not offend Davy Crockett and his ilk.

UND had no guy "dressing up like a Sioux."

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Just like that bird? It was a dismal failure, in every way. Took only a short while for it to die, but die it did. It will take a long time for a new mascot to take hold, but it will only take a short time if it will fail.

On that note, since miners rape the earth, and when people think "Denver" they don't automatically think 'OX', please please please pick the astronaut. I want the astronaut.

Or a pony.

If they go for Ox (or oxen) apart from the total lack of connection with "Pioneers," they're gonna have a problem. What in the wide world of sports is an Ox costume going to look like? And it's doubtful they'd opt for a live ox. Peta wouldn't like it and there's all that messy cleaning up. And where would he be during games? Sitting next to Jay? As silly and non-Pioneer as an astronaut would be, you could at least come up with a plausible costume. And we could call him Yuri, after the first man in space. Or Valentina for the first woman in space.

Sigh, it is gonna be a long year :(

Astronauts = Pioneers of the Universe :)

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

There's a timely article in the current issue of Sports Illustrated[April 8, 2013 cover date]. It's called "Big-Name Hunters" written by George Dohrmann. It details the use of search firms by college athletic departments in filling coaching and administrative openings. [In relation to college athletics] the preamble to the story calls such search firms the new "power brokers". Given DU's current situation I found the story an interesting read. Just passing this along for those who might want to read it.

Although a pony would be nice...

I have 2 nominations which both gained attention in the TV seies Bones. When the team was studying a murdered victim who was supposed to be killed by the cryptic animal, chupacabra, intern Vincent Nigel-Murray says, "I'd be skeptical if you told me there was a venomous, egg-laying, duck-billed, beaver-tailed mammal, and yet the platypus, it does exist."
Chu-Chu or Platy the Pio, a choice for the ages or until Chancellor Coombes is replaced. :p

As an illustration of the obvious result of PC thinking, empowering the most easily offended, I offer this example. Target "apologizes" for using the term "manatee gray" on a plus size dress but not on smaller size versions of the same garment. Now if Target had called it: "fat, sloppy, unattractive hippo gray," the lady might have a case. But manatee? What about the plus sized ladies who live in Manatee County, Florida, and consequently have "manatee" emblazoned on their license plates? This is the world DU is enthusiastically entering, with eyes wide shut. Good luck in choosing a mascot somebody won't find offensive, for reasons the triviality of which makes no difference.

*Imagine crawling into the rack at night with a woman who trolls websites, looking for "insulting" differences in color nomenclature. I suspect nobody does, at least nobody male.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

I have mixed emotions about Mayfield signing early. On one hand it comes as no surprise. I think his temperment and style of play are better to suited to professional hockey than collegiate hockey. On the other hand I think his departure could--I emphasize could--be "addition by subtraction" for Denver. All season Denver was at or near the top of list of division 1 teams in terms of amassing penalty minutes per game. Mayfield led the team in that category so his departure, while costing Denver an aggressive defender with decent offensive skills as well, also represents a decided chance for the Pioneers to stay out of the penalty box far more often, thereby not placing so much burden on the PK unit and gives Denver the opportunity to play more minutes at full strength.

With Zajac, Makowski and LaLeggia the Pioneers have three capable "offensive" defensemen. Josiah Didier is a solid "stay at home" defenseman. If Denver is able to find one or two capable "stay at home" defenders they'll have a nice offensive-defensive mix on the blue line. I never expected Mayfield to stay past his sophomore season and my own $.02 is that the events of earlier this week had little to do with his decision to head to the Isles. Good luck to him.
