Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

I think it will be a blast to watch hockey at 11:00 a.m. Bizarre, but fun.

Live feed for the slalom championships: http://www.ncaa.com/championship/liveplayer/player?gameId=290785&date=2013/03/08

Nice! DU's Kristine Haugen wins the slalom, and DU's Tianda Carroll finishes 3rd. Great result for the DU women.

DU men about to do their 2nd run, DU men did well in the first run.

And there go DU's chances...two DU men completely messed up the slalom. Oh well, wait til next year. DU will be lucky to finish top 5 finish this year. (Edit: DU is in 3rd place right now, but would need a super-improvement in their 2nd day of XC in order to keep that spot. They better get some space-age wax on!)

Andy LeRoy had some great success as coach early on, winning 3 national titles in a row. He has also recruited some great skiers (see our women's alpine team today). But this is the 3rd year in a row with a mediocre result. I don't know enough to say whether coaching had anything to do with the busted men's slalom result today. In a sense, they had to go for it, in order to stay in contention. But when only a few racers had any real trouble with the course today, and two of them were DU skiers, it leaves some room to second guess. The poor result in the XC races also put too much pressure on the alpine team. I'll think about it over a beer at the hockey game...

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Here is my gloomy prediction for the weekend--UAA takes 3 points from DU. I know it could just as easily be a sweep for DU, if DU had an excellent week of practice. But I base my gloomy prediction on a quote from one of the Shores in the paper, in which he says DU has been playing "playoff hockey" recently. If playing "playoff hockey" means losing 1-6 and 1-5 in consecutive weekends, we are in for a surprisingly disappointing weekend. The boys better bring something DIFFERENT this weekend, or it could be one of those "I can't believe they laid an egg" things.

That said...GO DU! Gotta come out strong and dictate the pace, score the first 2 goals of each game. That's a tall order, but that's what it will take.

Patrick Wiercioch scores his 2nd goal--again on the Power Play. Ottawa leading 2-1 in the 1st.

Drew Shore one of the featured players on the front page of Florida's website

CBS Sports Top 10 College Hockey Players in the last 10 years
!. Zach Parise Sioux
2. Jack Connolly tUMD
3. Matt Carle University of Denver
(missed the rest--think 4 and 5 were also from the WCHA)

bump!, what a bizarre season!

Yep. Being 8th in the PWR given our roller coaster ride is surprising. Some of it is luck some of it is scheduling.

Our D and Jussi are dialed in. My biggest concern is the PP. We had 6 chances last night and converted once which on paper sounds okay. The set up was sloppy.

Lot's of great goals last night . The feed from Philips, the feed from Loney. The five hole bigger than Texas that Zachary drove through for the shorty and 10's move and blast from the point were the highlights. The talent discrepancy was about as large as Gundie's five-hole.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

UAA has a 75% kill. That makes our troubles with set up last night seem bigger. Who gets the start in net? Sam I Am? Or Red Hot Finn?

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Nice work. Sounds like the team took care of biz. Rycroft seemed amazed about UAA's level of play, and gwoz seemed to give...how shall I say...faint praise...to Shiak. You have to think UAA will play better on Sunday, so DU will need to elevate its game a bit, make sure and get on the board first. The guys need to close this out strong.

I agree. It's pretty hard to judge DU's performance last night, since UAA's goalie seemed like the only player who played well. I can't remeber ever have seen a team play as badly as UAA did last night. And still, DU was only one of six on the power play.

I think the biggest dangers to DU will be assuming that UAA will play that badly again tonight and not taking them seriously, and preparing for next week as though they will have another easy weekend. It seems likely that DU will play either Minnesota-Duluth or CC next weekend. No matter what the standings say, either one of those teams has the potential to present big problems for DU. Given that the team has by no means guaranteed itself a berth in the NCAA tournament, I really hope that they all have the attitude that the next several games are must-win.

Not to sound too critical, but what has Sam done lately that deserves a start? He's been a major disappointment all season long, not the dominator he once was. Lingering effects from his surgery and rehab? Something between his ears?

The decision may hinge on what happens tonight, but I'd go with Sam.

DU is 2-8-1 on Saturday's after the 9-1-0 start. Granted this game is on Sunday, but the Saturday issues for this team are not on Sam.

Lets keep Jussi fresh for the playoffs.

Depending on what happens tonight, it wouldnt surprise me if Giwoz goes to Murray tomorrow, last home reg season game as a senior.

That works for me. This young man has been dealt a bad hand. And I haven't heard about any bad attitude.

From my limited interactions with Adam Murray (happened to sit next to him twice while he was injured), he seems to be a great kid and was really cheering on his fellow players. However, I would suspect that Big Sam will get the start as a tuneup for the playoffs in case Jussi falters or gets injured. If the game is in-hand, I wouldnt be surprised to see Murray play maybe the third period. Sam is also the only goalie on the team with any playoff experience, so making sure both he and Jussi are as sharp as possible may just be ideal. However, trying to figure out Gwoz is pretty much as feeble a task as there is...

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

The DU men's basketball team shares the regular season WAC title with Louisiana Tech after finishing the season with a 78-54 over same. I think DU will probably be the 2nd seed in the WAC tournament. Because they split the season with each other, the tie breaker is, I think, RPI, and I doubt that DU will have a better RPI then Louisiana Tech.

Nevertheless, it would be pretty cool if DU wins the WAC tournament and goes to get slaughtered by Gonzaga in the NCAAs.

No jumping to conclusions. And you surely don't want to offend them. Then again, maybe you do.
