All Things Denver, XXX1X

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

UMD had similar gaudy numbers with a second period lead in '04. In fact, they lost only one game all year long leading after the second intermission. Guess who to.
And that was a 3-1 lead for UMD going into the third period. (As DG said to me in Boston at the end of the 2nd period--"we got 'em right where we want 'em." Prophetic.) Just think, if Berkhoel doesn't make that amazing kick save against Lessard on the 2-1 break at the end of the third period, it would have been 4-1 going in the 3rd, and probably no national title for DU that year. Thanks, Berkhoel!!

I couldn't find any highlights of the 2004 semifinal against UMD, but here are some highlights from the championship game vs. Maine. Inspiration for tomorrow. Key points in video are Maine goal at 2:00, goal waived off at 4:00, 4:50-6:25 Connor James gets hooked for the penalty and Gauthier scores. 13:40---the start of the craziness that became the legendary 6 on 3 to end the game.

For even more inspiration, from about 7:30 forward on this video are highlights from DU's 2005 national championship win over North Dakota, with Stickney's calls:

I haven't seen that power play since it happened. 11 years later, it was still hard to watch. I kept hoping they would kill it. That was a crazy way to end a game.

Thanks for posting this Pablo. I have heard about this game but never seen it. I was just telling someone about it this morning. Is that DG holding the banner at the end?

Jaillet in goal tomorrow for DU per Monty
Good decision not surprised.

2004 game regional final against North Dakota in Colorado Springs was the best hockey game I've ever been to. What a huge upset after they embarrassed us 8-2 and 6-2 at Magness earlier in the year.

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

Wow, some early surprises so far!! Tech and Minny are done. Who would have thought this given Tech's huge start to the season. Minny looked terrible, no more Rau!! Not gonna miss that guy. But what about all the empty seats?, it boggles the mind! In a world where women's college basketball sells out and regional college hockey games look like a ghost towns!! What the Hell?

I've said it numerous times before, but I believe the 2004 Regional Final between North Dakota and DU was the best game I have ever seen in college hockey. As you mentioned, North Dakota dominated DU early in the season, and won a third game 6-1 (I believe). Then, in the fourth matchup, DU held North Dakota to a 1-1 draw. Gwoz used that blueprint in the Regional Final to stifle North Dakota's high-powered offense. What I loved about the game was that both teams were firing on all-cylinders. North Dakota had a ton of chances, but never was able to slip one past Berkhoel. Denver meanwhile, did its best to limit the Sioux to the outside and did a good job of letting Berkhoel do his thing. Then, as it looked as it was going to go to OT scoreless, a puck flutters past Jordan Parise and gives Denver a 1-0 lead. North Dakota fought hard in the waning seconds, even hit a goal post, but were unable to solve Berkhoel. I thought it was an extremely even game, either team could have won, but the puck just bounced DU's way that night (hey, it had to after bouncing against DU for 35 years).

I even rooted for Denver at the Frozen Four that year...to date, the last time I have rooted for the Pios. :p:D:D

I was sitting there just waiting for UND to put one in the net.. I always kept an eye on Zach Parise who killed us in the first two games at Magness... I think Drew Stafford was on that team as well. Shutting out that high-powered offense and winning the game was to me, truly a miracle.

I'm a little nervous about today. We've just done horrendous in the tournament ever since 2005. I hope our guys are ready to play today.

As I'm sure everyone in this thread is well aware of, DU has the talent to win it this year. The way I see it, DU's biggest weakness is inconsistency in net. If Jaillet plays solid today, and if LaLeggia is back to his normal self, DU should win. Demko is a bit of a streaky goalie, has been playing well of late, and BC might just have the top D-corps in the country. I don't see this being a high-scoring affair, so DU can't afford to get anything besides a strong performance in net. If either team gets a 2 goal lead, it is probably over.

Anyway, good luck to DU...keep the NCHC's perfect record in tact.

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

Anyone else nervous this morning?

Ready for the boyz to skate for victory today! DUIT!

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

Of course I'm nervous. I think this is the best chance in years we've had to make it to the FF. If we get that "one and done" monkey off our backs today, look out! Go DU!!

Yeah, I'm starting to freak out!! A little over an hour until they drop the puck. Earlier I mentioned something about the lack of fans in the seats. Fargo, Manchester, it doesn't seem to matter. What gives?, where is everybody?/

I don't think that's DG holding the banner, but I'm not 100% sure about that. He and I both got on the TV a lot during the semifinal against UMD. Of course, DG and his friends were wearing togas during that game, so they were much easier to pick out from the crowd in that game.

I agree that 2004 regional against UND was a great game. I just remember all these waves of attacks by Parise & Company, but we somehow stood up to them until we got that memorable goal in the 3rd.

I'm nervous today, for sure. It was encouraging to read an article about Montgomery the other day, about how his teams inevitably peak during the post season. I hope that's the case! Should be some great hockey today. We need that first line to produce, or to at least put enough pressure on the talented BC defense so that our defensemen can find ways to get into the play up front. GO DU!!
