Skinner's team is based in Khabarovsk which is a mere 30 km from the chinese border it is 5000+ miles east of Moscow. Population is over 500,000.

Just hop on the Trans Siberian Railway to get there. Don't think Agatha Christie had Khabarovsk as a destination on The Orient Express. ;)

It looks like a very interesting city, considering where it is.

It's a little chilly in Winter - average high in Jan is about two degrees. Probably will feel just like Brandon, Manitoba or Grand Forks...

Should be a cool experience.

Games are at TD Garden in Boston and tickets are $5.00 each with the proceeds going to charity. Bruins season ticket holders get in for free. Games are at 7PM ET. These games were originally scheduled to be played in Shelton, CT.

Holy Cow!!! Thanks Swami for the links!! I doubt Brett in his wildest dreams saw this one coming!! I wonder if the league is competitive and his teammates are stud hockey players? I mean, what level are we talking about here?, would they school a team like DU?, or would it be comparable?

The Kontinental League is the second best hockey league in the world right now, IMHO, just below the NHL. This league pays about twice as much as the AHL on average, and some of the guys are getting big bucks. It's funded by some rich russian Oligarchs. Team Payrolls are about $50 million at the the top end and $12 million at the bottom. Skinner's team payroll is about $17 million.

Even the lower end of this league would likely handle a DU team by several goals. DU last played a Russian League team in 1989 (Moscow Dynamo), and got taken to the woodshed on home ice.

From Hockey's Future

17. (15) Marc Cheverie, G, 23
Acquired 7th round, 193rd overall, 2006

The Panthers clearly have a ton of depth at the goaltending position because Cheverie is another prospect who could very well play in the NHL one day.

Cheverie had another very strong season, statistically even better than the season before. He posted a save percentage of .932 and a goals against average of 2.08 playing for the University of Denver. He also won 24 of 35 games. He's a quick, athletic goalie with very good reflexes, especially considering how tall he is. He also likes to come out and aggressively challenge the opposition.

Unless a trade occurs, Cheverie may find himself starting the season in the ECHL simply because he'll have to compete with Markstrom and Salak for playing time.

They also list Drew Shore at #15 noting that he needs to step it up this coming season.

Guys, this is All Things Denver. I am surprised that nobody noticed that recent DU grad Stephanie Sherlock has reached the semi-final round of the 2010 USGA Woman's Amateur Golf Championships. I graduated in 1972 with Debbie Massey who went on to win 2 USGA Amateur Championships.

Stephanie should be teeing off about now in hot, humid South Carolina. She is playing against 17 year old Korda who had the best round in yesterday's quarterfinals.

"Probably not as much as if we were to win something in hockey,” said Sherlock when asked whether a Canadian winning the Women’s Amateur would be big news in her home country. “But I think some people would start to pay more attention to golf. I think it would shed some light on the women’s game up there for sure.”

Looks like scoring available on the site.

Update: Stephanie lost to 17 year old Korda who has had the hot hand the last 2 days.

It'd be interesting to see a team like Ska St. Pete play the Hershey Bears to get a feel for how the AHL stacks up against the KHL. I guess we'll get a little look when the Canes play them in St. Pete in October, though i'd put last year's Hershey team against Carolina any day :)

Ska St. Petersburg has about 15 ex (mostly Russian) NHL players on its roster (Yahshin, Nabokov, Zubov, Afinegenov, Brylin etc.), many of whom could still be playing at the NHL level, but have nice contracts to stay closer to home. I expect they'll do very well against Carolina, who will be far from home and still in training camp mode. St. Petersburg will already have been playing for a month.

I remember the good-old days when my RPI countdown posts were often consecutive. Now we spend most of our time in the off-season speculating over players leaving early , and almost everyday the previous countdown post is over a page away.

Think most are taking the weekends off :D

Since we lost to RIT, the depression has been pretty deep. Recovery is taking longer than expected. But at least there is light at the end of the tunnel--please no more oncoming trains. :D

I'm still depressed about that loss :(

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Disappointed? Yes. Depressed? No.

DU won the WCHA and had an awesome season that just ended too early. We all had tons of fun until the very last day. Such is is the nature of sports, and in a one-and-done scenario, the best team doesn't always win. Yeah, I was ticked at the time - it was a lost opportunity. That said, another 40+ teams didn't make it to the dance, and DU did win the toughest-to-win trophy in the college game.

If you want guaranteed endings, it's best to stick to opera.

In the meantime, enjoy the ride, even if you puke at the end.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Today was the first day of the DU pro camp.

Day 1 Wrap-Up

Some odds and ends about some former players.

Mannino recently got engaged to former DU volleyball player Alyta Baris. Colborne crashed hard into Mannino during the neutral zone transition game drill. Mannino signed a two-year deal with the Atlanta Thrashers this summer. Stastny plans to use Easton sticks for the 2010-11 season. Gauthier has been living in Denver this summer with his wife, Tammy, and daughter, Brooke. Gauthier, Dingle, Paukovich, Corbin and Testwuide are free agents. Corbin married Annie Laatsch this summer. May signed a one-year deal to play in Norway, while Vossberg signed with the ECHL's Alaska Aces last week. Glasser is close to a deal with the CHL's Colorado Eagles. Former Pioneers Brett Skinner and Brock Trotter will be playing in Latvia next season, while Ryan Caldwell and Adrian Veideman are returning to Germany. Former DU goaltenders Adam Berkhoel and Glenn Fisher have officially retired from hockey. Berkhoel is working full-time with Vaughn Sports. Berkhoel played six seasons of professional hockey. Matt Laatsch married the former Jill McMillan this summer in Texas.
