All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Just for the sake of discussion, let's say the U.S. men's hockey team wins a medal [pick a medal, any medal] in Vancouver.

Denver will play home games on Friday March 5th, Friday March 12th, Saturday March 13th and Sunday March 14th [if necessary].

The Colorado Avs play at Phoenix on Thursday March 4th, would fly home that night and be in Denver Friday March 5th before playing at home on Saturday March 6th against Saint Louis. The Avs play at home on Thursday March 11th against Florida. The Avs would be in Denver on Friday March 12th before flying to Dallas on Saturday the 13th to play the Stars on Sunday the 14th.

Again, the Avs would be in Denver on both Friday March 5th and Friday March 12th. On the first date Denver plays CC and on the second date Denver plays its first round opponent in the WCHA playoffs.

Pick a date, either date. Here's a possible scenario. The teams skate on to the ice for pre-game introductions. The players' names are announced over the public address system. The national anthem is played and/or sung by that evening's performers. While the lights remain dimmed, an announcement is made directing all fans to turn their attention to the Northeast corner of the ice surface, to the doors through which the Zambonis enter and leave the ice surface. The doors swing open, and a figure wearing his U.S.A. men's Olympic hockey jersey, with his recently won gold/silver/bronze medal around his neck, skates on to the ice while the public address announcers asks the crowd to give a warm welcome to former Denver Pioneer star and recent gold/silver/bronze medal winner: Paul Stastny. As I say it's just one possible scenario.

Works for me!

Getting chills just thinking about it! :) :) :)

Any inside word on him? He appears to be really small for a D-Man!

His stat line makes one a bit wary, but its hard not to trust "Killer" at this point.

Why would a d-man's stats worry you?

DU hasn't done much solid recruiting of players from that area since John Harrington -- if really even then. I personally like this development, I think our last recruit from Edina was Jay Moore about 20 years ago.

Current DU junior d-man Joey Brehm is from Edina. Although he's never played in a non-exhibition game. :)

True. I think it was last season's exhibition game where Brehm took maybe 5 or 6 shifts and took about 3 or 4 penalties.

We mostly have had role players (Vossberg/May types) from around the Twin Cities the past 20 years -- except for Berkhoel, Chris Kenady and Jay Moore. I fully welcome this development of us getting a potential impact player from up there.

EDIT: Bryan Schoen could have been a top one, if he hadn't played on DU's worst-ever teams...

EDIT 2: http://www.collegehockeystats.net/0809/boxes/malbden1.o04 -- Brehm did indeed take 3 penalties (all lazy holding and hooking penalties) by about halfway through that game and I'm pretty sure he didn't take another shift after that 3rd penalty. No surprise we haven't seen him in a non-exhibition game.

Van Vooris just turned 17 last month so he still has time to grow. Bozak was 5'7" when he was 18 and ended up 6'1 when he arrived at DU three years later.

The most valuable commodity in college hockey these days are puck moving defensemen. Look at DU on Saturday night, goals by Wiercioch & Donovan moving through Tech's defense untouched.

In the modern era of college hockey, even strength goals have become a rarity and the reason why is that defenses are packed in and the goaltenders spread out in the butterfly all game long. A defenseman who can deliver a flat puck and/or skate through the neutral zone opens up all sorts of easy goals.

According to USHR this kid is an "excellent skater and puck handler with great mobility."

He is going to tear things up in the college game.

Voorhis had a lot of big time schools after him including UND, BC, Vermont and Notre Dame.

Two things: Where did you find "killer?" and what about this -14 stat?

Be careful with thoses stats. Those are only his stats in the USHL with the U-17 team, the youngest team in the league. It does not reflect any international or non-USHL games the U-17 team plays. The USHL teams typically have older 18 to 20 year old players. The U-18 team is also in the USHL and is significantly more successful.

Those aren't his complete stats. He's also played dozens of other games against US colleges and international games. He and his teammates are 16-17 years old or playing against 17-21 year olds in the USHL.

This is the first year the USNDT-Under 17 have played in the USHL and its pretty obvious they are completely overmatched. That being said, playing against older players usually pays off down the road in hockey.

Killer is DU's recruiting coordinator Steve Miller's nickname.

Pretty stats are nice to look at, but those pretty stats are not necessarily part of the NTDP's objective. For reference, check this out: http://hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=67805

Pretty sure this guy was an above average player for us.
Also, pretty sure that this Van Vooris' stats at the same age in the same program are roughly equivalent (though +/- is not listed). :)

There is really nothing that should be concerning us right about now.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Our coaches' track record is pretty great in the recruiting dept.

Chances are if they've offered a scholie to a prospect, the kid is projected to be an elite college player.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Peter Mannino recalled by Atlanta from Chicago(AHL) his line 18-3,1.97 GAA and a .934 save percentage.

Ok, Ok, sorry, sorry, sorry!! I stand corrected. I'm just really focused on the +/- stat. I'm told it is one of the most important stats, but I can see that was only a glimpse of his career so far. Mybad!

No big deal.

The +/- stat is one of the least important stats when looking at recruits. These junior leagues (USHL, NAHL, BCHL & AJHL) have wide disparities in team talent and guys on a poor team can be -30 and it means nothing.

Case in point, Chris Knowlton was Captain of the Des Moines Buccaneers last season. He had 13 goals, 11 assists. Des Moines was 12-43-5 and had the 2nd worst record in the league. Knowlton was -21 on the season.

Knowlton is easily the biggest surprise on the Pioneer team this year.

Here's all you need to know about DU recruiting. Each season DU has three to six scholarships to hand out. These scholies are worth $200,000 and Gwoz and staff would rather eat glass than hand $200,000 over to some kid who can't play.

From Chambers blog today - Wrenn and Martin will play this weekend and Nutini will not. Gwoz will dress 7 D and 11 forwards again this weekend. He has been using the 7-11 "Slurpee" combination the last few weeks. He likes being able to rotate the 7 D as it keeps them fresher and he typically rolls 3 lines with the 4th line getting occasional shifts.

I like the 7 d-men. The truck (Ryder) gets to add to his hits.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

bump!! Great game last night against the Swiss! I had no idea the Swiss were that strong! Stastny had a good game, one assist! Didn't he and Parise face each other in the 2005 final?
