All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

I will be married 25 years this coming summer and my wife has 0% interest in hockey. She has gone to some Islander games but prefers to go to a movie or the theater. Being on the east coast with the DU games generally starting at 9 or 9:30 my time, it is possible to go out for dinner or even take in a movie before the game. Thankfully, we have 6 TVs and anywhere between 3 and 5 computers in the house so being able to watch or listen to a game is generally no problem. With my kids in high school and college sometimes they will watch with me. Most times they have plans on the weekend and aren't home. Tonight I will be watching on Pioneer Vision as we are expecting a significant snowstorm starting later tonight into tomorrow. GO DU!!!

I`m happily unmarried, and I just don`t make dates on Fridays or Saturdays during the hockey season. Unless she wants to go to the game (very likely) or watch it on TV (not as likely) or watch or listen on the computer (very unlikely).

Usually I can`t read these boards on Friday afternoon as I`m traveling to Denver, but today I`m a passenger thanks to my buddy Justin who is driving this weekend. I`m typing this as we cross Vail Pass, the Verizon aircard works great in the car!

I`m hoping Murray gets the start tonight, not only for himself, but I think it will raise the level of urgency for the rest of the team, who certainly would like to see Adam get a win. It might negate any lettdown after last weekend`s excitement.

The NCAA can't do anything about this. If a 13 year old kid wants to verbally commit to a school, how is the NCAA supposed to stop him? Tell him he can't go to college? The coaches still aren't allowed to comment on the player until he signs a NLI and that can't happen until their senior(?) year.

I would have figured that a ND fan would have learned by now the NC$$ can do whatever it d**m pleases.

Getting a commitment from a 13-year old is luncacy, of course, for all of the obvious reasons. The liklihood that this kid's talent level will remain as advanced over his peers over the next five years as it is now is practically zero. I doubt he'll even be as successful as Todd Marinovich.

In hockey, I recall when Boston used to finish last in the 6 team NHL, Bruins fans and media would console themselves that things would be better when Bobby Orr came up. Orr was 14 at the time!

So we'll see.

Just in case the ultra-sieve gets a start in net tonight, I'm shelving my typical DU sweater in favor of a hopefully karma giving one. Those in attendance at section 18 certainly will notice. :)

The UAA sweater?

That didn't work out so well the last time Murray faced UAA....

Murray's got the Bird Turd on his goalie mask & no Boone. Talk about bad Karma.:D

Every spouse has a different tolerance level when it comes to hockey. I've been married for 16 years now, and there are always new trade-offs to be generated when it comes to hockey season. Mrs. Swami is very good compared to some spouses. She comes to about half the DU games with me, and has been known to make few hockey road trips every now and again, but there are limits as to how much hockey she can take, especially when there are 'competing events' that are important to her that she wants me to attend. Or when I occasionally break things or scare the dog after meltdowns, as happened during the great Mankato meltdown of 2003-2004.

In general, it's really important to bank as many off-season karma points as you can. Sometimes, also giving up a non-league game to go to her dinner party will serve you well when you need to take that trip to Madison or when the WCHA playoff goes to a third night in a row....

Good luck

Thanks Swami for the pearls of wisdom!! She has no interest in viewing sports, period!! She is a Denver native, a former Breckenridge Ski instructor, and loves to skate. She even played in the women's league one season!!! Still, nothing. Oh well. Old Pio, I was kinda hoping for your perspective too!! Any thoughts?

Well, as a single guy I can't add anything personal. But I would be inclined to have a divorce lawyer on speed dial in the event I had a spouse who got between me and my Pioneers. :D

However, in the interest of comity, DU hockey fans need to make it clear to prospective spouses before the nuptuals what the deal is. There may need to be some negotiating, sort of a Pioneer pre-nup. Hockey guys might have to agree to be interested in figure skating, and to show enthusiasm for the silver lame costume of whatever latent heterosexual is cavorting on the screen (Olympics are exempted here, because, well, they're the Olympics).

Pioneer fans might have to be willing to take their spouses to a performance of Iolanthe, or some snooty art exhibition or God forbid, the ballet. But it's all in a noble cause, right? :D

Watching Devils/Leafs before the DU game and it is tied at 1 early in the 2nd. Tyler Bozak has an assist on the Leafs goal.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

I guess getting 4 points in a game and leading the team in scoring can earn you a call-up. You going to the DU game tonight?

Leafs leading Devils 3-1 end 2nd, Bozak still with 1 assist.

It is obvious that the Habs were jealous of all the attention DU posters were giving their arch rivals, Leafs. So once Trotter's name was mentioned they had no choice--they had to call him up. :D

Hope Brock gets to stay awhile!
