All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

They were suspended for the leaving the bench as the fight broke out at the end of the game. Two players from UAA left their bench first so Wrenn and Ryder hopped over the boards. Leaving the bench during a fight is an automatic suspension.

Minimal impact on Friday as Donovan and Nutini will return to DU's line-up. Donovan was at the WJC and Nutini had been hurt. Will be interesting to see if Gwoz rotates two d-men out for Saturday to put Ryder and Wrenn in. Like Wisconsin, DU is deep at D and Ryder, Nutini and Wrenn have been in and out of the line-up all season. Donovan will play both games.

Thanks! Looking forward to a good series.

"The youth movement may not determine whether or not the Toronto Maple Leafs make the playoffs this season or not, but they are the foundation upon which Brian Burke and Dave Nonis are counting on to build this team.

The vast majority of college free agents in hockey rarely translate their skills into the NHL but there’s reason for promise with Tyler Bozak. While Viktor Stalberg and Christian Hanson have yet to make their present felt in call-ups to the big club from the Marlies, Bozak has breathed some life into the previously moribund first line. He’s established some chemistry with Nikolai Kulemin and Phil Kessel, although the sniper remains mired in that horrific scoring slump.

The Leafs don’t have a true number 1 centre and perhaps Nazem Kadri can be that guy starting next season but for now Bozak’s speed, hockey vision and crafty instincts will hopefully ensure a longer stay with the Leafs than his college counterparts."

He has 5 points in 6 games, not bad for a rookie.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Last Friday at the game I saw Francois Giguerre. He was sporting a Bruins notebook as he is apparently doing some scouting for them. With their struggles, I am wondering if they think it is time for him to move.

As a Bruins fan I have seen his name added in a lot of "what it would take to get Kovalchuk" discussions. You have to wonder if him going to Atlanta would hasten his departure from Denver?

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

In the 2008-2009 season Tyler Ruegsegger had 26 points.
So far this season Ruegs has 27 points.

And that's a bump.

I assume you are talking about Colborne. The big question is can the Bruins absorb the cap hit that Kovalchuk will bring? He is making $7.5 million this season and Kessel is only making $4.5 million. They traded Kessel because they couldn't afford him. Do they want to put all their eggs in one basket and give up some more of their young prospects and players. He and Chara would be making $15 million between the two of them.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Boston needs to win now. Their willingness to part with Kessel signaled that pretty clearly.

Colborne's stats are better than you'd think at 8 goals & 13 assists in 20 games. But 5 of the goals came via the power play. Clearly he's not getting things done 5 on 5 at this point in his career. Add to the mix that with his current build he can't be an NHL 3rd or 4th liner, which is what held him off Team Canada.

If DU is going to win the National Championship they need Rakhshani-Ruegsegger-Colborne to be unstoppable 5 on 5. They need to make opposing coaches fear them so much, they have to commit their best players to matching up every shift.

From here on out Colborne needs to be a goal a game player for DU to win some hardware.

I'm hoping Colborne's broken finger slowed him down and he will be coming on in the 2nd half as he did last year.

I know both he and Wiercioch were reported to have gained about 15 lbs from last year, but I think they must have weighed them in full uniform including skates--last year for sure and this year maybe. :D

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Joe has shown the ability to score big goals when his team needs him to score, and he's good in the corners with that long reach. He is still growing into his body, too. I think we'd all like to see him up his physical presence, which is better than it was last year. He's developing well, but I think Damien is right that if he wants to make the jump to pro hockey, there is another more dominant level of college hockey that we all would like to see him get to - he's close to getting there, but not there yet.

Colborne and Wiercioch have made no secret of the desire to play in the NHL. I agree with Swami they both have to grow into their bodies. Colborne will turn 20 at the end of this month and Wiercioch doesn't turn 20 until September of this year. They both have some filling out to do. Other than a few super stars, they would still be on the young side for the NHL after this year.

Of all the DU players that left early in the last 15 or so years, I can only think of two that have had any sustained presence in the NHL (Can't remember if Rycroft and Laaksonen left early), and that's Pettinger and Carle.

Butler has been miserable this year on a good team. Colborne and Wiercioch are in such a hurry, they might end up burying themselves in the AHL like Paukovich, Dingle, Skinner, etc...Colborne and Wiercioch are not strong enough.

Paul Stasnty joined the Colorado Avs after playing two seasons as a Pioneer. He's averaged nearly a point a game in the NHL now well into his fourth season. He's likely going to be a prominent part of the US Olympic team in Vancouver as well. I'd call that a "sustained presence."

Besides some of his late game heroics, which have been great, I have to say that I have been a little disappointed in Colborne. First round, #16 overall, huge in stature and brains, great kid etc.., in my mind has just not been that impressive  sorry, sorry, sorry!!!. He has a tendency to cough it up during the break out, he sometimes seems lost, awkward and is just not what I expected. However, two weeks ago against Anchorage, he was bringing the puck up the left side and completely lost the "pillar" of a defenseman without losing stride and took it to the net. He didn't score, but, oh so close. Had he made that shot it would have been a youtube sensation! I for one would love to see more of that. And by the way, no disrespect intended!!!

Laaksonen stayed all four years. I think Rycroft left in the middle of his junior season, if memory serves.

I was bummed when Rycroft left. He was a dynamic player, fun to watch, and a clutch goal scorer. But I'm glad for the success he had in the NHL. It's also cool that he's stayed very connected to the Pioneer hockey program.

Watching USA hockey compete in the Olympics is always on the top of the schedule, but having a DU player on the team is really something special.

USA! USA! USA!

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Does anyone know if Laaksonen ever played for the Finnish Olympic team?

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Hockey DB does not show him as ever having played for the Finnish National Team.

IIRC, he was on that Silver medal winning Finnish team in 2006

BTW, on your recent post on the "Bring out your dead" thread you mentioned Bill Jennings. His son Jeff was at DU when I was. He was always in the next booth over in the press box. At the FF in '66, Jeff brought along some Stanley Cup highlight film. In it, Glenn Hall made a particularly spectacular save, on his back, reaching up to snare the thing on the way in. Buddy Blom freaked out. And had 'em replay the save over and over and over again.
