Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Big article today in the Denver Post by Irv Moss on one of DU's all time greats; defenseman Greg Woods. Check out the picture with his original home jersey with Denver Boone on the front. As someone who I knew very well at DU, Greg was one of the most gifted offensive d-men in DU history. I still scratch my head as to why Greg didn't make the 1980 Olympic Team. I was at all of the training camps in Colorado Springs and he was one of the best d-men there. I know he is very proud of his career at DU including being part of the outstanding 1977/78 team which went 33-6-1 and was ranked #1 almost the whole year. The players on that team always wanted the chance to go to the NCAAs but the team was on probation by the NCAA and denied from going by the federal courts. DU was still ranked #1 by The Hockey News even after BU won the national title. Last summer when I saw Greg he pointed that out to me again. Nice article by Irv.

From Gwoz's press conference this afternoon, Beau Bennett and Chris Knowlton are doubtful this weekend due to injuries.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Beau Bennett's brother is coming to DU. Looks like a non-scholarship player....

I'm not so sure about the non-scholie part. Factor in Wrenn's departure & Van Voorhis' deferral and there is certainly scholie money available. You keep Beau Bennett around for an extra year or two and factor in Salazar & Nutini's strong play. With two goals in 8 games its certainly plausible that they gave him a scholie or at least a partial.

A few interesting tidbits: Despite what the article says, Wade is actually the older brother of Beau. He switched from forward to defense recently which explains why his hockey development was behind Beau's.

He also played for the Trail Smoke Eaters in the BCHL last season before switching to the NAHL. He had 3 goals and 25 assists.

Bruce Ciskie has posted WCHA Mid-Season Awards and the All Rookie Team was some familiar names--Zucker, Makowski and Brittain.

All WCHA
2nd Team Drew Shore and Sam Brittain
3rd Team Matt Donovan

Rhett was injured in last night's Islander game. He suffered a concussion. Here is from the Isles' Newsday blog talking about who practiced today.

Recent call-up Rhett Rakhshani is not; he suffered a concussion in last night's game but, because of inclement weather, the Islanders have not been able to get him to a specialist yet to assess the severity.

Rhett played on the 3rd line last night with Josh Bailey and Jeremy Colliton.

That's too bad. And unexpected as he was listed on the depth chart on one of the Islander blogsthis morning.
Hope it won't keep him off the ice too long.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Any update on Rhett Rakhshani's status? Or is he still snow bound on Long Island?

Since he was injured while playing with the NHL team, does he stay on their roster or get sent back to the AHL?

Nothing new on Rhett, I assume he is going to see a doctor today if he already hasn't. He stays on Long Island as the injury happened in the NHL.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

In depth article from Inside Lacrosse on how the upcoming DU/Duke lacrosse game in Long Island was put together. Duke gave up a home date with DU to play this neutral site game. Tierney gives his insight in the following quote.

Tierney also sees this as a great opportunity for a variety of reason:. “This is a great thing for Denver lacrosse. We are a growing program and are very proud of what we have accomplished, and to play against a fantastic coach like John Danowski and his defending national champions in this environment is a great challenge.

“We need to continue to establish a presence on Long Island. One aspect that I am really looking forward to on April 9 is the opportunity to, in a way, introduce people to the lacrosse movement out West, to see what Denver lacrosse is all about. We are very excited to have the chance to play in front of Long Island fans.”

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

No new info on Rakhshani. He has a concussion and will be evaluated this week is the only thing I was able to confirm last night on the Islanders' live game blog that originates from the press box much like DU's live game blog.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

The Pioneers are probably going to be a little rusty for the first period or two tonight, due to the bye-week layoff and players integrating themselves back into the lineup after a month away from college game play (Zucker, Shore and Bennett if he plays). The key is going to be Brittain and the defense holding firm early and not getting into a hole.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Bump! DU steals a point, we are one point out of first place, CC lost, UND lost, UNO tied, all is well in the world. Oh and I stayed awake 'till the end!!

Hey, did Bennett play?
