Re: ALL THINGS DENVER--XL--This one's for Old Pio

I was following your game with Ferris State and when I looked over your starters for that game I was amazed at how small (relative) your team was and especially your defensive starters. Was I reading your lineup correctly? Gives hope for us ECAC folks who are recruiting smaller and smaller on defense. We have big teams in the ECAC like Cornell who we affectionately call the skating Pylons (Thank you Harvard) where everyone needs to be 6'4". You seem to be doing quite well with small and fast rather than big and slow. Am I correct on this?

Yes, you're correct. Overall, we are not a very tall team (I think the average is 5/11) Our coach is big on having D men that can move quickly (and have good stick handling/shooting skills) and contribute at both ends of the ice. Zajak (a former winger) and Butcher are the strongest examples. I think this is a trend that is gaining around the country. You also see forwards getting bigger which is interesting. I think of the current BC team (a very different look than in past years).

This seems very similar to the way Quinnipiac builds their team. We are not overly big but are skilled up front and the D can move the puck quickly in transition. I'd say even for a smaller team Quinnipiac is willing to throw the body around and block tons of shots and take teams space away.

Of the 6 starting D-men:
1 @ 5'7"
2 over 6"
3 @ 5'9" to 5'11'
More importantly , average weight is 180--none at 200 or more. Pretty light for a defensive corps. At times that may be a problem.

Incoming freshmen are both over 6'--1 at 6'5" This is unusual for sure.
In the next 3 classes looks like one over and 1 under 6'.

speaking of size:
team averages
BC 6'0" 187 lbs.
UND 6'0" 193 lbs
QU 5'11 3/4" 185 lbs.
DU 5'11 1/2" 182 lbs.

Re: ALL THINGS DENVER--XL--This one's for Old Pio

According to SBN, betting odds are:
UND 7-5
Quinnipiac 12-5
BC 14-5
DU 7-2

Are you saying that you have two six-inch GI Joe figures playing defense for DU? You'd think I would've noticed that before now, but here we are.

97 F Henrik Borgström (HIFK U20) commits to Denver. Big pick-up from Finland, 6'3 F paced his team w/ 55 pts, notable re-entry draft look

It's part of Monty's secret attack strategy.

Pios leaving for Tampa today.-- About 53 hours until puck drop.
DU website keeping track of Pio stories in the media. Nice to see hockey getting more coverage.

Viz. Are you making the trip? Also wondering if Swami is headed down.

I wonder if a banner for the Pios would be enough reason for Swami to come back, if only for a few celebratory comments. If they do beat UND and go on to win it all, that would take some of the sting out of it, at least. A very small some.

Go Pios! Should have traveled down from Green Bay with my neighbor to watch her son.

Wish I could have but have a commitment I can't defer here in Cali.

Prepare to be disappointed on both fronts ;)

Heinan won some national poty award, never heard of it before: http://americansportsnet.com/frozen...en-earns-first-asn-player-of-the-year-trophy/

r
First time award was ever given. It's from the network NCHC added this year.

When I first saw this on Twitter, thought it was a little early for this sentiment. And not to jinx the prospect, wouldn't use it. But since the Regionals ,I say

#SkateforEight

Pedal to the Metal Pios!l

Re: ALL THINGS DENVER--XL--This one's for Old Pio

Proud of our Pios. They never gave up and they played with class.

Now let me just say I'll be cheering for Quinnipiac. Don't want fka Sioux to get ahead of our Pios in Nattys.
Go Bobcats!

Re: ALL THINGS DENVER--XL--This one's for Old Pio

Hats off to Denver for a great season. They were obviously UND's equal tonight. Great to see two NCHC teams in the FF.
