Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

Happy New Year, Nanook Nation.

For the hell of it, here are my top 5 favorite Nanook hockey moments from 2013:

5. Winning the Brice. In particular, the OT win against Denver. It was nice to rub sand in the face against a couple of NCHC programs.

4. Sweeping January. I don't care how bad michigan was last year, sweeping them at Yost and Notre Dame in their fancy new barn on back to back weekends was a big deal.

3. Dropping the puck against NMU in our first WCHA conference series. As much flak as the WCHA and McLeod have gotten lately, they gave our team a new home when it was otherwise left in the cold. The WCHA represents a new era for us as a D1 program.

2. The Carlson Center renovation and locker room unveiling. It represented the first upgrade in Nanook athletic facilities in many, many years.

1. Cody Kunyk's OT winner against UAA in March. It was beautiful.

#5. Sitting at home with a cold brewski, reflecting back to 4 years ago watching the Nooks win the 2009-10 Governor’s Cup.
#4. Sitting at home with a cold brewski, reflecting back to 3 years ago watching the Nooks win the 2010-11 Governor’s Cup.
#3. Sitting at home with a cold brewski, reflecting back to 2 years ago watching the Nooks win the 2011-12 Governor’s Cup.
#2. Sitting at home with a cold brewski, reflecting back to last year watching the Nooks win the 2012-13 Governor’s Cup.

And the #1 favorite moment from 2012-13 …Sitting at home with a cold brewski, looking forward to watching the Nooks win the 2013-14 Governor’s Cup.

Two themes going on here. Cold brewskies and winning the Cup. It’s a great day to be a Nanook Fan. :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

We host Minnesota State this weekend. This is a very important series IMHO, even tho it’s the first weekend in January. I’m still optimistic that we can get the last spot for home ice. If we get swept, we may be scrambling just to make the conference playoffs. If we can take 3 of 4 points, I think things may fall into place.

From what I have seen on AmericaOne, they are a good skating club like the Nooks. MSU plays on big ice so this should be an entertaining series. I was kind of hoping for -45 temps just to distract the Maverick’s focus, but it’s going to be somewhat pleasant by Fairbanks standards.

I’m guessing that Larson is back this weekend. Curious how much playing time he gets and where he will fit into the Nook lineup. I’m sure he’ll have to work his way back into game shape. And I would have to think that Jones gets the nod in goal for the Nooks Friday night. Someone has to emerge as our go to guy in the second half.

Would expect some small crowds this series. Students are not around and this place (students and the townies) probably empties out more than most over break. Promises of getting out of here mid-winter is the only way many spouses ever agree to come to this winter wonderland (and the permanent fund dividend of course).

Here’s a quick excel snip of info. Not my numbers, so I won’t take it personally if you trash them…but I won’t go to the trouble of changing them either.

It's actually 15 degrees warmer in FBX than it is in Mankato right now. Maybe they'll pack the swimsuits.

Go Nooks!

We used to play on big ice. Added seats this year and reduced the rink to 90 feet wide. I'm still not sure whether that helps or hurts, but I think the long-term hope was to be more "NHL-friendly."

Still, I would agree that it's 2 good skating clubs, and should be an entertaining series. We're missing Zach Stepan, who's off at the World Junior championships, but Casey Nelson, a defenseman, should be back.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

Hopefully the guys aren't too rusty after the break. With the two week roadie coming up, we need points and to build off the success we had against UAA and Bemidji.

Go Nooks!

Smashmouth is at the blue loon tomorrow too so that might take away from any potential crowd. Will be filled with a lot of kids tho since kids under 12 get in for free.

With a multi-platinum record selling band like Smash Mouth, I would consider it a "win" if your attendance breaks 1,000 tomorrow night.

I love the great excuses you guys come up with. LMFAO!

So your saying the kids will be unsupervised, since all their parents will be at the Loon?

Soooo what's your excuse considering the Anchorage population is so much larger than Fairbanks' is? We can still pull more in attendance than UAA does. Oh wait, I know it's the "parking issues" the Sullivan has right? Or that more people would rather buy season tickets for the Aces than the Seapups?

At least UAA loses fans to a successful PRO team, not a team in the junior leagues. ;) And don't argue that they don't because mmf has already told me that was the case. (Sorry to drag you into this mmf).
