Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

I'll pop the question to butter bean at the luncheon on Friday on your behalf ;)

It would be an interesting question. I haven't looked at stats compared to years past, but we aren't good defensively right now. Goaltending isn't stellar either, but considering how often we've left the goalies out to dry that's a bit understandable.

Part of NCAA Rule 67.3
Spectators are not permitted to use artificial noisemakers, air horns or
electronic amplifiers while the game is in progress.
The band(s) shall not be allowed to play while the game is in progress.
PENALTIES—Warning or bench minor against offending fans’ team
for delay of game.
It is the referee’s discretion, depending on the severity of the action,
whether or not a warning is necessary.

So they can be used at a whistle until the puck is dropped?????

Yes. See the use of cowbells at Mississippi State as a prime example. As soon as the play has died, you will hear a cacophony of them at Scott Field.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

What’s the status on the arrival of our new HD video equipment? I hope we bought a set up that can zoom out or I hope the camera guys watch another broadcast as a learning tool. Seriously, I know the video quality is bad, but is our current setup not able to shoot wide enough to keep the goaltender and the blue line all in frame. I watched a little of the streaming replay against NMU and it’s impossible to follow the play, and the cameraman trying to follow the puck/play while zoomed in makes it extremely jerky.

One of the things I dislike about taking photos at a hockey game with my DSLR is that I have to zoom in and so I miss much of the game action. I would think the same drawback applies to video if you zoom in too much. Watch last weekends AmericaOne’s video of Bemidji and MSU. The camera follows the play down the ice…but at either end the goalie and blue is in frame, and the whole neutral zone and both blue lines when in transition. They rarely zoom in except for after the whistle.

Maybe Methodical can jump in here give us the low down.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner.

The video project is underway. I am not involved in it, but the people that are, are highly competent. There are a lot of changes coming, including, obviously, HD. The production will, I believe, be student run, so they'll take a while to get up to speed, but I have high hopes that the quality of both in-house and the external-feed will improve as the workload is spread to more people.

One of the reasons coverage in the carlson is such a problem is actually the angles involved. The main camera must be positioned either on the 2nd floor balcony, or the first floor behind the seats. Both locations are very close to the ice, forcing the camera operator to make extreme angle changes to go from net-to-net. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is very difficult and extremely tiring to an operator, as the operator must physically move to manage the angles properly. I have done this a few times and was myself surprised. I've also shot in the sullivan higher in the seats, which is MUCH easier to pan net-to-net because the angles aren't nearly as sharp. That's not to say that a competent shot isn't possible, but it requires more skill than average, and importantly, the operator can't be lazy as it'll show.

The new equipment coming is state of the art. The only thing I'm not sure about is they've only got 3 cameras initially, and I don't know if they'll have 2 co-located up top. To me, that's extremely important as you don't want cam1 (the main cam) deciding to go tight at the wrong time. In typical hockey productions, cam1 is wide, cam2 is tight. Cam1 concentrates on keeping a good wide shot at all times so that "adventurous" shots on 2 and the side-cams can be taken with the ability to back to 1 on a moments notice, without informing the operator that they need to arrange a shot.

We shoot from the seats in the upper bowl about 2/3 up for that very reason.

Looks like Butterbean had some luck out at the dump
Seems to have found some defense
Maybe somebody will drop a goalie off for him next week

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

Cahill did all you could ask for tonight. He was pretty solid against Tech also. If he gets the nod at Bemidji, hopefully he can come out with a solid performance and then go on with a few good back-to-back games. We have three goaltenders that can put in a solid performance, but we’ve been lacking consistency. Maybe we have turned that corner.

Go Nooks!

That he did. Four goals allowed isn't great, but on a couple of those he couldn't have done anything, including the one where his helmet got knocked off (gee, wonder how that happened). But he also made some great saves, especially one in the 2nd during a UAA PP where he absolutely robbed UAA...it was the one where the whole crowd started cheering thinking they had scored. It feels good to get a solid goalie performance again.

Amazing save that was! I partially think someone was working magic to create an invisible force field cause UAA fans weren't the only ones who thought they scored.

Sounds like Kunyk made a nice play on Saturday. Anyone have video?

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

watching the game right now. The announcers for bemidji don't realize there are two alaska teams, apparently. They continually refer to us as alaska-anchorage. Awesome, they don't even know what team they are playing against...

They should know who we are now after that beat down. We should have swept, but I'll take a win and a tie on the road pretty much anytime.

That win in Anchorage was huge. We have our swagger back. Considering we are at home most of the 2nd half, we should be able to make a push in the standings.
