Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

Always look forward to Labor Day. The boyz are back, hockey is in the air, and pontifications, prognostications, and outright delusional premonitions can begin in earnest.

I see where some fan bases have tossed out predictions on how the conference might shake out. The rest of our team threads have been pretty quite. Below are last year’s stats for nWCHA teams. Not that last year means much, but it’s a start.

After careful scrutiny of who and how many points each team lost, goaltender status, offensive and defensive systems and how teams match up, and what new recruits are coming in…yeah right, who are we kidding, I just guessed. My pre-season guesses are on the left.

You guessed? You got to be kidding me. You didn’t go to the North Pole for some help?

I’m not knocking you or St. Nick. You’re both tops in my book.
And I’m not exactly svelte so I have to tread lightly here.

I was curious as to who played who two times vs. four times, and who might have the more favorable schedule. Based on “my rankings”, NMU probably has the toughest schedule and MSU the most favorable schedule.

But we all know that this stuff doesn’t mean squat. Let the games begin.

Via Twitter, the News Miner has a new sports writer, Tim O'Donnell. Based on that tweet, it sounds like he will be taking over the Nanook hockey coverage from Danny Martin.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

I’ve been told there all a few NCAA technicalities on when you can and cannot list a player on your roster. That usually ends when classes start. So does anybody know why our third goalie (freshman) isn’t showing up on the roster? Is there something to worry about or did he just get lost in all the construction mess on campus?

I've seen a couple cases where there were delays with NCAA clearinghouse documentation. If I understand it correctly, that one final hurdle in a player being eligible and thus able to be on roster.

Considering the past issues for which we are now paying for, I hope they're taking their time dotting the i's and crossing the t's.

Our freshman goalie is now on the roster, bringing the total to 27. We have a good mix and competition for playing time should be kicked up a notch. Work ethic in the classroom, weight room, and in practice will be at a premium. Now the boys just need to work harder than the other teams. It’s not that complicated.

With the Nanooks being in a league that has women’s hockey, what are the chances of the Lady Nooks club team making the jump? They have been pretty successful, and seem to be well supported.

Practice starts Monday. Time to get this show on the road.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

Dropped by the Patty and watched a little bit of practice today. They looked fairly quick. It seemed most everyone had quick hands and feet. That’s good to see, especially after reading this morning’s Newsminer article on WCHA rule changes.

…During the WCHA teleconference Wednesday, the league announced new rule changes for the season. One of the biggest changes is players are no longer allowed to pin the puck carrier against the boards.

“They want us to enforce where we let the puck carrier skate instead of trying to hold him or pinning with your knee, your arm, or your stick,” WCHA Supervisor of Officials Greg Shepard said. “They want them to play.”

There also is a change in the interference penalty. The penalty now more closely resembles the NHL penalty.

“If a puck carrier dumps the puck into the zone, you can hit them right away,” Shepard said. “But if you don’t hit him right away and he starts making a move and you hold him up, it going to be a penalty. The defenseman has to turn and go.”

They’re putting a premium on quickness and speed, which I hope bodes well for us. D-men will have to be on their toes. Can’t wait to see if the team can put it altogether on the ice. Drop the puck.

Go Nooks!

Went to tune in to watch the blue/gold game, and they wanted 8 bucks for a mobile pass. Are they kidding? No way for a intrasquad run time exhibition game....

Ditto. I thought it was free to stream, but screw that. Save the money for when it counts.
Like the initial beer you buy at the arena, it will be in close proximity to the apex of the list. I believe.

I probably shouldn't have gone for it. First half was fine, halfway through the skills contest video went down, and now I'm not even getting audio. Hopefully they work the kinks out before the Mercyhurst series :p
