Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

This thread has less interest than facebook has satisfied investors.

But I did notice that UAF posted a vacancy announcement for Assistant Men's Ice Hockey Coach today. Anybody know anything?

Interesting. As I recall one of the assistants had expressed some interest in relocating back to the states last year, can't remember which one though.

Seems like it's been a flat-calm offseason.

Can anyone see the possibility that I see........

I guess we are also looking for a new AD.
To save money I'm sure we'll consider a combination AD/assistant hockey coach...and if we're lucky maybe we can find one who drives a zamboni.

Just make it part of Dallas' job description and bump his pay up 20 grand.

Kidding aside, I wish Forrest nothing but the best.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Wow-- thanks for posting, MMF. It was Brian Meisner who was a finalist last year for the assistant coach at Minnesota-Duluth. Seems likely that he's the one leaving, especially since he was dealing with health issues the last part of the season. (Plus, Lance West's wife is about to have a baby, which is an awkward time to move.} But who knows . . . I don't see anything showing up online about either Meisner or West accepting jobs elsewhere. I'm not on campus much this time of year but I'll ask around at the rink on Monday.

As for a replacement . . . I wonder if they'll be looking at Ryan Reinheller, since he's been a volunteer coach for several years. Also, Chris Sislo, the director of hockey operations, just finished his grad program at UAF and had been planning to leave Alaska. He also has a coaching background and worked with the team.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

One more thing -- the job posting is only open for a week. I'd say they know who they want to hire.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Scott Jerome (XC and Ski coach) will be interim AD until a permanent replacement is found.

If he's anything like he was during the banquet in May we should at least be in for a few good one-liners.

You cannot overstate the importance of having a good sense of humor if you are involved with UAF athletics...
...just saying.

Good luck Coach Jerome.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Wow.

So help me think through this. The nWCHA will have a 28 game conference schedule. That leaves us with 6 non-conference match-ups. I hope the Kendal and the Brice continue, so that eats up 4 of those. Our current two game Governor's Cup series eats up the other two (if they continue). I would assume we always play Anchorage 4 conference games.

The buzz is that the season nWCHA champ gets a bye, and the other 8 play off with the four winners going to the conference tourney along with the champ. The first round playoff series are seeded, except that the Alaska schools always play each other the first round unless one us is the season champ.

So we only have to be better than Anchorage to get to the conference tourney, even if we are 8 and 9. Or if we both end up in the top five, then a top half team is "guaranteed" not to make the tourney.

And just how many times will we play UAA? 4 conference, 2 Governor's Cup, 3 tourney? Are we really playing UAA maybe 9 times in a season? Or are we dropping the extra 2 non-conference games and looking for another tourney or series? Are nWCHA playoffs best two of three?

I like a four game rivalry, but 9 games would get old quick. Maybe we are doing this in lieu of buying so many tickets for visiting teams during the season. It will interesting how open the U is with disclosing terms of conference membership.

Of course, it will be fun going to the tourney every year. :)

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

I'd think the Governor's Cup would just be awarded to the winner of the 4 conference games.

This idea of of both Alaska schools playing each other in the playoffs regardless of league finish is p.u.s.s.i.f.i.e.d. Once again we look like we'll have a situation where the geographic majority impose themselves on the minority. It's full on c.h.i.c.k.e.n-s.h.i.t.

I don't have time but I'll have an unequivocal negative post on my blog about this BS within the next two days.

I have a hard time saying this but I agree with you, this will be the first and last time we ever agree.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Calling all Nanook fans!

Does anyone know where I can find the game-by-game results for UA for their tenure as a D-I team?

I'm doing research for a D-II Play-up Belt (Championship Belts are awesome and you should read up on them if you're not familiar.) and Alaska is one of the schools where I couldn't find that information. alaskananooks.com was utterly useless.

A link would be appreciated or you could send me an email at [username] (shift-2) gmail dot com. Thank you!

USCHO has that data going back to 1999 on the UAF team page. Not sure where you can find anything past that, though. We've been playing hockey since the 1920's so it may be around in some form, but I'm not sure where you would find it.

You might try emailing the athletic department and seeing if they have any records dating that far back.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

The new roster is up. Matthew Gates, Michael Hill and Robert Monfore are not on it. Nothing surprising about Hill or Monfore, but I wonder what the story is for Gates.

I am surprised that we're still without a new assistant coach. So much for my theory that the team had someone in mind. I thought the most likely candidate was Ryan Reinheller, but it sounds as though he didn't apply. Anyone know the status of things?

Were those players all freshmen? Any word on why they aren't coming back? Not enough playing time or what?

Totally agree about the uselessness of alaskananooks.com. It's crap.

I long for the days when Eric Carlson was keeper of the Nanook Web Site and an active blogger. Mr. Peabody and his way-back machine had nothing on Eric. Lots of good stuff. I wonder if there is any current link to the information he use to reference? Anybody know?

I'm also surprised we haven't named a new assistant coach. Either we had a boatload of applicants to weed through, nobody applied, or the budget office is trying to save a few bucks. I also thought that the initial opening period of one week was probably about six days longer than they really needed. Guess not. Maybe good coaches willing to work for minimum wage are hard to find. :)

Here is my take on the players. Michael Hill was a promising freshman forward (ALL NAHL in in 2010-11), but due to a bad injury never saw action for Nooks in 2011-12. Tough loss for the Nooks and probably even a tougher loss for Michael. Not sure if his playing career is ended or not.

I believe Robert Monfore was the freshmen D-man from Wasilla living in the dorms, invited to walk on mid-way into the season when our d-corp started dropping like flies from injury. Stats says he was in 3 games, but I can't remember seeing him take a shift. Kuddos to the young man. I'm sure he worked his butt off in practice knowing he wouldn't see much or any game action.

Not sure about Matthew Gates. Freshman center last year, played 17 games, with a 0-0-0 scoring line...at least that’s what I found on-line, but I thought he contributed a point or two. I think there may be a little back story on this one but let sleeping dogs lie. We wish him well.

So...no drama here with players leaving...as far as I know.

You are so correct! The Nanooks current webmaster knows they are currently putting out and inferior product. They should reach out to Eric and ask for some pointer!
