First the weather forces a cancellation and now the government. Maybe we need another option next , five bonus points for picking postponed games!

Re: >> AHC Pick'em 2017-2018 <<

I'm still trying to figure out why Air Force was able to play both home and away games during the last shutdown in October 2013. Maybe different rules back then?

Guessing it all has to do with funding. Perhaps it changed since then? I saw that Army was allowed to play this past weekend because they use non-DoD funds, whereas Air Force does.

Let me gts that for you....https://washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2018/01/20/air-force-cancels-athletic-schedule-amid-government-shutdown-navy-to-continue/. 😊

Blaze my question was SPECIFICALLY about the October 2013 shutdown.

That shutdown was between October 1st 2013 and October 17th 2013.

During that time the Air Force Academy played hockey games against Alaska on October 11th and Alaska-Anchorage on October 12th.

Both of these two games were played during the shutdown.

Hopefully Air Force looks back to October 2013 and what rules they followed then that allowed them to play during that shutdown if they are faced with another government shutdown in the coming weeks.

if it was based on where funding came from, I think it may be too late this season to change anything...

Hey Downstate,

I looked all over the place and only info I found was that it was a partial shutdown in 2013 and their games were away games. They started an athletic association in the same year so maybe they had some funds to help out. This year was a full shutdown and the games were home and the federal employees weren't allowed to work so therefore, they couldn't host the games. Just my thoughts on what I read. In 2013, the football team got a grant from USAA to play one game during this time as well. As far as the Alaska tourny, they were able to get free tickets on Alaska Airways (11 tickets I'm told) so that helped.

Hi Blaze,

Thanks for doing additional research on the games Air Force played against the two Alaskan schools during the 17 day government shutdown in 2013. Whatever the future brings I hope Air Force is looking at ways to continue to play the rest of their season and post season should there be another shutdown. For Air Force to have to forfeit games would wreak havoc on Atlantic Hockey. Anyway, as they say, water under the bridge, I hope, I still have to make this weeks picks.. Don’t know if I can catch you. :)

Re: >> AHC Pick'em 2017-2018 <<

FWIW, this year AFA said all home *and* away games were cancelled.

Some info from this article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...down-navy-to-continue/?utm_term=.27d3e9c887ba
Navy uses non-appropriated funds, some coaches who are government workers (because they also teach) wouldn't be able to coach under the shutdown.
Army has a "contingency plan" to cover the lapse in appropriations. Athletic Dept is mostly non-appropriated funds and contracted personnel.
"All three athletic departments operate as separate, private entities from the government-run academies. The Naval Academy Athletic Association was founded in 1891 as a nonprofit organization to “promote, influence and assist in financing the athletic contests of the midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy.” The Air Force Academy Athletic Corporation began operation in 2013, and the Army West Point Athletic Association began in 2017."

So I guess I'm not sure why AFA is different.

I tied Chris Lerch this week after picking up 7 points (could have had 9 but called the RMU/AIC split the wrong way!). My late season comeback starts now. Chris Lerch has overtaken first place. Do you guys want to continue seeing Chris and Dan on the standings list, or should I keep them separate?

Re: >> AHC Pick'em 2017-2018 <<

Very impressive that the USCHO guys who cover the AHC know the teams so well. The guys who cover the WCHA teams can't pick winners for *****.
