Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

I'm not going to argue that truckers should be riskier etc. and there are instances of truckers who were tired causing accidents...but it seems they get a disproportionate amount of 'feedback' on this type of issue...they haven't outlawed driving with a dog on your lap, being < 21 yo, eating a big mac, arguing with your wife or being distracted by kids in the backseat. Those all cause accidents too; reducing the efficiency of all truck transport in the country to avoid X amount of accidents (that aren't the majority of accidents) because said accidents are noteworthy is a bit of over reaction against a small part of the population because it would be "too hard" to address the other factors.

Nobody wants to see an 18 wheeler cause a fatality...that we were all able to gang up on truckers and force changes upon "them" doesn't mean we've made roads safe. We probably have more controls on truckers than gun owners at this point.
It seems to me that there needs to be more flexibility in things for truckers then there is now but the idea of making them stop for an extended period of time to rest is a good idea...

Rest is a decent idea, especially when you've had the experience of driving from Omaha (yes, I took a side trip, I know we played vs. St. Cloud) to Troy NY in a day and a half. I had to get an hour of shut-eye along I-86 for an hour because the few hours at the truck stop in Kingsville OH wasn't enough.

Trucks get bad reps because of the size and the fuel. Take a town like Skaneateles NY which has been trying to ban truck traffic on US 20, and coerced the village cops into being basically abusive to truckers (but hey, I wouldn't want to pay the tolls, either).

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

This is why? Because every now and then they don't work like they're supposed to? I guess you shouldn't use a car then either.
especially when I'm guessing Flagdude isn't driving a semi...

I've driven a truck before. However, jmh missed the point. It makes me wonder if these drivers are really paying attention to their surroundings and not to that electronic gadget. When the guy saw the sign for actual height (which was clearly notated), did it not come into mind to go to a safe area, pull over, and discover an alternate route? Maybe it's just me, but before I drive somewhere, I closely examine a map to determine not only the best route, but any possible contingent routes that I may need to consider.

So....what you're really against is idiots using GPS devices.

I can get on board with that. But then I've believed for years that there should be stricter requirements for people to get a driver's license.

No, I'm still against GPS devices, and will return any sort of GPS device that someone tries to present to me. There's a certain charm about driving a vehicle to a remote and typically unknown location, while using orienteering skills. However, I don't like idiots that use them, either.

They conveniently have on/off buttons.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

I certainly hate people like meaniegirl who drive around completely unaware of where they are only following the GPS. I like have the GPS for new places and knowing a potential ETA but I certainly know where I am alternate routes, etc. I don't use them much but they certainly are nice to have in certain situations, especially to find something when you need something now...

GPS is great for some situations. Such as both my fiancee and I being new to the city we live in. Without GPS, getting around for the first year would have been terrible. Especially since the street layout here makes no sense whatsoever.

Pittsburgh is like St. Paul?

My mother-in-law is like that. I try to explain to her the best way to drive from point A to point B and she doesn't want to hear it, just wants to let the GPS direct her. It leads to turning your brain off while you're driving and that's never a good thing. That being said, if you're trying to dynamically reroute in an area you're unfamiliar with, it can be awfully useful.

Also: JF moved to Pittsburgh?

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

I moved to Pittsburgh on July 1, 2012. Pretty sure I mentioned it more than once. ;)
Well excuse me for not paying attention. :p

Probably should've noticed you saying something to that effect in the Frozen Four thread, if nothing else, though!
