Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

You really are a wuss like soh said. Cabo San Lucas was amazing. I'd go again in a heart beat.

I'd like to go to Jamaica. A few friends have gone, and they loved it. I never had any interest in Mexico, ever.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

It's too hot in Mexico. I went there once in April and it was like 100 degrees out. Not right at all.
The amazing part about Cabo San Lucas was the fact that the highs were in the 90s while I was there and I was more comfortable there with the breeze and dry air than the 78 degrees and high humidity when we got back to Minnesota. I was pretty shocked at how comfortable I was down there...

Low humidity does that. That's why here in Arizona you can have a 100 degree day and it doesn't really feel that hot if you have like 10 percent humidity.

yeah, but Arizona sucks :P The desert weather is nice and all but Cabo is near the ocean and on the sea. Fishing is amazing down there.

So the guy wants to emulate the whole of Mother Russia, but without the cool, fiery crashes?

I guess there's a lot of people who do this. I saw a video of a guy who did it for I-90. And I mean the whole gosh darn thing (minus a few feet between several interchanges).

I had heard about these guys who do it domestically, but I'm not sure I understand the thrill or interest in it. It's the highway.

As for the Russian videos, those people just have theirs running as part of the insurance/proof of fault thing, because they have some crazy drivers over there, and a lot of insurance issues.

As someone who enjoys this sort of thing, it's a nice way to experience the open road without having to purchase the fuel. I don't have a camera or else I'd do something similar. Road trips make for a happy FlagDUDE08. It's all about the journey and seeing the country. Mobility is nicer than being stuck in one place. I'm not sure that I'd full-time travel yet, but who knows.

I spent a long weekend in Jamaica for a friend's wedding back in December and had a fun time. That being said, even if you're planning to stay at a resort and not really leave its grounds, be prepared to see some poverty on your way from and back to the airport. If you'll forgive the cliche, it's a different world.

Yes, I've been told that. Quite the change.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Cross-posting from the MLB Ballpark Roadtrip thread.

I'm going to the stadiums of Miami (Sat 6/29), Tampa (Sun 6/30), Atlanta (Tue 7/2), Houston (Thu 7/4), and Arlington (Fri 7/5) and staying in hotels in Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, St. Petersburg, Forsyth, GA, and Houston along the way.

But, we don't have anything to do yet in Atlanta or Tampa (the two cities where we'll have some extra time to spend) and we'll be driving through Louisiana (especially Baton Roughe) on 7/3. Sights to see, restaurants to eat at, things to do in any of the aforementioned cities would be awesome.

Thanks!

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

While we were in Tampa for the Frozen Four last year, friends and I went to a restaurant called The Refinery. We had a really good meal there, reasonably priced in my (NYC-accustomed) view with entrees on their current menu (it changes every week) in the $13-$21 range. Fun vibe too. Highly recommended.

If you're beer fans, try to drink some Cigar City (local microbrewery) while you're there.

Enjoy!

North Carolina's bid to increase the highway speed limit to 75 MPH pending speed studies has failed the house vote. http://www.wlos.com/shared/news/fea...s/wlos_speed-limit-increase-fails-12261.shtml

Meanwhile, Ohio is up to 70 on most interstates (not just the pike), and NH's governor has approved I-93 north of Concord (minus Franconia Notch) to go up to 70. IL's governor is still considering 70 MPH.
Meanwhile, the State of New Jersey still does not have an enforced speed limit on the Turnpike.... :)

Never been on it, so I wouldn't know. I was on the Garden State Parkway in 2008 before they doubled the price...

Illinois's speed limits on the freeways are interesting. It's been a while, but when I was driving through the state with my buddy, on the way to St. Louis for the Frozen 4, their speed limit signs had two values. First listed was 65 MPH for normal vehicles, and then there was 60 MPH for the commercial vehicles, aimed at tractor-trailers, my friend told me. This action taken by the state, by default, makes the effective limit 60 MPH for all traffic as that state has a large number of haulers on their highways. It was wee bit frustrating during that part of the trip.

Add it to the list of why Illinois sucks.
