Re: A Thread for prayers, good vibes and what have you
Dunno if you want to relocate, but USDA - Agricultural Research Service has an aquaculture program - most of it is down South, but it's the government. Pay is ok, but some of the bennies are pretty good.My thoughts with Shirtless and others who are suffereing from loss.
I could use a few good thoughts and vibes myself. I am currently in the midst of a job hunt as the money that has been paying my way to stay at SIU as a technician will run out at the end of the year. I have a masters and had started a PhD (my work has been in aquaculture) when I decided that I wanted to change course and being pursuing a job/career rather than finish the phd. Its not that I feel I wasnt smart enough or anything to do a phd, I just felt I could play to my strengths this way and was ready to not be a student anymore. I had full support of my advisor in making that choice. Anywho, I have been looking and its been tough. I have some applications out there and I heard about the first one today and was told by someone in the personnel deparment of this particular state that I dont meet the qualifications for experience. I needed 2 years total the 2 years I spent doing a masters counted as 1 year of experience and I guess the 2 towards a phd did not count for squat. Though I did spend 4 months working for the DNR in another state and have been a technician for 5 months so bascially I am like 3 months short. I am contacting the guy at the hatchery who is actually doing the hiring, maybe if he likes my CV and me enough he can override this.
But it is quite frustrating. In this field it seems like so many of the jobs want you to have X years experience and only count schooling for a very small portion of that (no matter how much experience you actually gained). Yet you can't get any jobs to gain experience because they all require prior experience. I know this can be a problem in a lot of fields actually. I am stressing a little though and it has made it tough to focus on the work I am still doing.
