A Thread for prayers, good vibes and what have you

Re: A Thread for prayers, good vibes and what have you

My thoughts with Shirtless and others who are suffereing from loss.

I could use a few good thoughts and vibes myself. I am currently in the midst of a job hunt as the money that has been paying my way to stay at SIU as a technician will run out at the end of the year. I have a masters and had started a PhD (my work has been in aquaculture) when I decided that I wanted to change course and being pursuing a job/career rather than finish the phd. Its not that I feel I wasnt smart enough or anything to do a phd, I just felt I could play to my strengths this way and was ready to not be a student anymore. I had full support of my advisor in making that choice. Anywho, I have been looking and its been tough. I have some applications out there and I heard about the first one today and was told by someone in the personnel deparment of this particular state that I dont meet the qualifications for experience. I needed 2 years total the 2 years I spent doing a masters counted as 1 year of experience and I guess the 2 towards a phd did not count for squat. Though I did spend 4 months working for the DNR in another state and have been a technician for 5 months so bascially I am like 3 months short. I am contacting the guy at the hatchery who is actually doing the hiring, maybe if he likes my CV and me enough he can override this.

But it is quite frustrating. In this field it seems like so many of the jobs want you to have X years experience and only count schooling for a very small portion of that (no matter how much experience you actually gained). Yet you can't get any jobs to gain experience because they all require prior experience. I know this can be a problem in a lot of fields actually. I am stressing a little though and it has made it tough to focus on the work I am still doing.
Dunno if you want to relocate, but USDA - Agricultural Research Service has an aquaculture program - most of it is down South, but it's the government. Pay is ok, but some of the bennies are pretty good.

Oh I will relocate, but when I checked the USDA's listings earlier this they did not have anything open at the time.

My daughter's boy friend was riding his motorcycle and was run over by an SUV that was doing an illegal U turn, pinning him under the vehicle. He died at the hospital three hours later. So prayers for his family.

Prayers for you Proud. It is so hard to get through the door - hopefully an opening comes soon.

This is so awful :(:( Prayers for his family and yours too. There aren't words for this kind of stuff.

May angels lead him into paradise
Upon his arrival, may the martyrs receive him and lead him to the holy city of Jerusalem.
May the ranks of angels receive him, and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may he have eternal rest.

:(

Funeral on Saturday was good; it was a way to pay final respects to Dad. One thing the pastor at my Dad's church said while we were setting up the funeral struck a chord with me. He said that right now, there's a pretty big hole left by my father's death, but over time, you move away from the hole, which makes it seem smaller with time. Two years ago, I went through this same process with Mom, and now I have to go through it with my father...

And I got an answer as to the cause of the cirrhosis: Wilson's disease. Doesn't make it any easier, but at least I know the cause of death...

Just got back to AZ. My stepmom is still hanging in there, though it's now probably a matter of hours or a day or two. She hasn't eaten in ten days and as of yesterday she had basically stopped taking in water. I felt like I needed to get back home yesterday to help my wife with our little one, but will probably turn around and make another trip back to MN sometime in the next week for the funeral. Didn't even interact much with my stepmom while I was there, as she slept mostly, but it was nice to be there for my dad.

My friend who had the manic episode is out of the hospital and is doing well. She tried to apologize to me for her incident, saying "I'm sorry you had to see that side of me," but I told her not to worry... she's human, not perfect.

Needing some prayers. Having a tough go with a family situation- the last yr has really upped the ante as far as how it affects me and my family. I should be old enough to know life isn't fair but I can't seem to find a way to be Christian enough to let things go. Any positive vibes/prayers would be welcome.

Prayers for you. Family dealings can be real challenging. Got some of those going on with my stepmom passing. She went friday night and I head back to MN tomorrow for the funeral Wednesday.

:( Prayers your way.

Starting now and by the end of 2014, I want to be as close to debt-free as possible. Debt runs in the family and I want out. The only thing I want left on the ledger by 12/31/14 is my student loans, which I want paid off by 2020. I need all the support I can get, because I'm not very disciplined when it comes to this stuff...

Re: A Thread for prayers, good vibes and what have you

I'm sort of trusting that no one here actually knows me (a few of my college friends read the boards, but only the UW threads on D-I, so I think I'm safe here...), as this is private and I want it to stay that way. I'm really anxious and worried right now, which is why I'm posting it, but I'd prefer it not leave this thread.

The short version is that Mrs. EoDS is 20 weeks along, and our "high risk" pregnancy doc is telling us that there's a chance Mrs. EoDS might have a specific condition that has a 10% mortality rate among women in labor. (It should be noted, his basis for this is from information he has in a test that my wife did over a year ago... and my wife was asking her OB about risks for pregnancy months before we even started trying... this should've been looked into a year ago...)

In order to rule it out, high risk doc had us do a new version of the same test taken a year ago, which comes back inconclusive (we waited until the end of a vacation to meet with him about that, because he said he didn't want to talk over the phone about it... why you can't say a test was inconclusive over the phone, I have no idea). Now, high risk doc is referring us to a specialist, the referral was in on Tuesday afternoon and I still don't have an appointment.

10% is a scary number to me, and I don't really like either of the two options we have to deal with that (one of which legally stops being an option in our state in less than three weeks). The anxiety is really starting to get me.

Re: A Thread for prayers, good vibes and what have you

Yikes. Sounds as if they don't have a good test for this (wondering if the interpretation of the test has changed over the last yr) and they are going to defer to the specialist who may have more experience in that particular area to stratify the risk. Some of those specialists only work certain days of the week. I know we have a few here that work one day at a facility and are incommunicado the rest of the week. Drives us crazy. After 25 yrs I still haven't found a thing to say that helps when they put you in a holding pattern. Hurryup and wait sux. Saying a prayer for you both!
