A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

Although this is a small part of the situation that only effects a small portion of the US population, it's something that hits home for me... There are vast stretches of parks and recreation areas that have become unsafe... There have been several instances of problems from border crossers on Falcon Lake and Lake Amistad in Texas... These are two of the best Bass fisheries in the United States... The lakes haven't been completely shut down due to issues, but it has become similar to navigating neighborhoods in a big city... There are "good" areas to fish in and there are "bad" areas that you are ok passing through quickly, but you don't want to do the wrong thing in these areas or spend more time than you have to there... To me, it's just something that peeves me off... We have enough time gaining access to the resources we have available to us... Border problems are not a welcome contributer to this...
Agreed. Organ Pipe is just one example of many such situations.

Article about a Mesa mom writing a letter to Obama on immigration after her police sergeant son was killed by an illegal immigrant drunk driver. Hopefully he'll pay attention.

Agreed on this point. I never bought the "oh illegals do the work Americans won't" schtick with one exception, agriculture. Its been tried already and the US can't find enough Americans to pick veggies in the field all day. That's why my proposal specifically creates a seasonal visa for these people, but with a provision their money gets wired back home so that they go back when the season is done.
well, I think Americans would do that work - but you'd have to offer $20 per hour (no piecework for us!), health benefits, etc. Everybody has a price.

Btw, I do think your plan is measured, fair, and practical - sign me up.

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

In typical GOP fashion the Bone Man piped up about the immigration issue.

1. It's Obama's fault.
2. No, you can't have any money, we have that earmarked for petroleum companies.
Boehner Slams Obama on Border Crisis

A visibly frustrated House Speaker John Boehner slammed President Barack Obama's handling of the border crisis Thursday, saying that the commander in chief should take responsibility for the problem.

“This is a problem of the president’s own making,” he said. “He’s been president for five and a half years! When's he going to take responsibility for something?"

Boehner also indicated that House Republicans won’t give the president a “blank check” to deal with the issue. But, he added, he does believe that Congress should act this month to address the influx of unaccompanied minors from Central America.

“I’ll tell you this, we’re not giving the president a blank check,” he said of Obama’s request for a $3.7 billion emergency fund for the humanitarian crisis. “Beyond that, we will await further discussions with our members before we make any final decisions."

What a leader.

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

Occupy Mexico. Construct new wall at former Mexican border.Recall Middle Eastern troops to deal with cartels.

Short of that, I don't see an easy answer.

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

I've mentioned this before, but I'll reiterate:

For those who came here prior to 2008:

1) If you joined the military and got honorably discharged, you're in. Walk down to city hall and take the oath. You're a citizen, no lines, no waiting.
2) If you were brought here as a kid and got a degree in an area of need (medicine, engineering, etc etc) you get to cut in line as we need your skills. Permanent resident provided no criminal record and work towards citizenship.
3) If you were brought here as a kid and have no college education, but you are gainfully employed, have no criminal record, and your employer will sponser you, get to the back of the line but you have a green card.
4) If you work in agriculture, you may get a temporary seasonal visa whenever you're needed. You must go home and pay should be wired back home to give people and incentive to leave and come back
5) If you don't fit any of these categories, you're here illegally so you have to go. My guess is that this policy particularly the AG part captures a lot of the roughly 10M or so illegals.

Still is about as practical and effective of a policy that anyone anywhere has come up with, at least in terms of components that would have a reasonable chance of actually getting implemented.

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

Thanks. I often get the politics of opposition even if I don't agree with it. Dems and Repubs have different views on the budget for example, or health care. This one I don't get. Lets say you want to avoid an omnibus bill and take them one at a time. Okay, so who exactly is against veterans becoming citizens? Who doesn't want a scientist or doctor to remain in the US? Who opposes a mechanism where AG workers can be here when needed but need to go home to get their earnings?

I get that you don't want to suddenly legalize 10M people, but nobody is actually proposing that to the best of my knowledge so its a nonsensical argument.

I think your plan is quite reasonable, as I believe I've indicated when you've posted it in the past.

But I do believe there are a good number of folks on the Dem side that want a path to citizenship for most if not all the illegals who are already here.

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

So instead of responding to the point I was making (unless it wasn't clear?), you just decided to spew out another epic strawman?
Maybe because you said it was ridiculous for a mother who lost her policeman son to a illegal drunk driver to write the President. Not exactly substantive commentary from you. Sure, she's not an expert, but if half of what the article says is true, the illegal who killed her son should have been long gone from the U.S.

I did nothing of the sort. I was pointing out the irrationality of pleading with the president to address crime A because your son was a victim of crime B committed by someone who also happens to be guilty of crime A. That being said, grieving mothers aren't required to be rational--my  isn't directed at her--it's directed at the media...and you.
