L'Esperance has some great hands. Lots of oohs and ahhs. He could easily have had a hat trick last night. Baltus and Gould made some pretty clever moves looking two passes ahead. Lots of talent on this team. Once they start clicking they will rattle off some big wins.

I guess it's too much to ask for us to sweep anyone who's worth a ****.

20 minutes to decide it.
Gould looking great this weekend.

What a complete and utter load of BS on that call, the rules say DEFINITIVE EVIDENCE, there absolutely was NOT definitive evidence, we seriously got screwed.

That officiating crew should be suspended, seriously one of the worst calls I've seen.

Re: 95th Season of Hockey- Michigan Tech Huskies 2015-2016 - Thread #1

I didn't go back and watch but in realtime it looked to me like he "slashed" the BG player in the groin well after the play was over.

Thank you Mel!!

"It was a horseshit call."

Overall we outplayed them and the team is looking much better than the first few weeks. You have to think that Lucchini is going to break out here soon, he has had some amazing moves and plays and has been so close. I also think L'Esperance is going to break out too, he has looked phenomenal and the only thing not happening is him finding the back of the net, he is seriously a beast. I do think if we can start clicking we will be a team to fear.

Rough night with 2 goals on Hanna's 5 min major and the goal being overturned.

Mel's postgame:
Look at review over and over, can't see puck, don't see how they can overturn without conclusive evidence
We played hard, better team at times, but we battled back
We have to be better, and play 5x5
Guys played hard and came back, not a good call, have to spin it positive
Every point is important, refs have to get it right
Jake Jackson hit from behind, will be revaluated Monday
Looks like 7 or 7:30 Sat for MSU

Well first, you can't take penalties like that, and the PK has to be better. It was middle of the road last year and so far middle of the road this year too.
Second, I thought we didn't do a good job back checking on the third goal. Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
Third, the non con games are huge. so let's look forward, MSU is very good.
I also would like to hear how recruiting for the next crop is going.

There needs to be a time limit on how long they can review a play.

I had it up on my 55 inch screen and couldn't see the puck in HD to determine if the play was offside, so, I have no idea how those four chuckleheads came up with this conclusion on a 20 inch monitor. There was no other angle shown that I could see over their shoulders, they kept looking at the same shot over and over. It's like watching the Challenger blow up over and over and expecting that one of these times it won't. They obviously WANTED to call it offside.

And the linesman who is squatting RIGHT ON THE LINE with no obstruction didn't call it offside. Thanks for apparently not asking the guy who had the best angle at it.

Certainly unfortunate, and down the line who knows, it will hurt us i'm sure.
For those guys that know the rules better than me: Does the puck have to cross only the leading edge of the blue line to be considered in, or the entire blue line. If it's the entire line, he looks off side, if it's the leading edge than I think he is on side. Though you have to guesstimate the pucks' position, if you assume it's in the mid point of the players stick, you can get pretty close.
And second, did the BG staff ask for a review?

BG initiated the replay.

The rule as I understand it is that the whole puck must cross the whole blue line. If a player is already fully across the whole line it's offside. There's no definitive way to tell exactly where the puck is from the given camera angle due to the position of Eick's body obscuring it. No matter what, the lino had the better view and he called it good.

Replay is not supposed to be "guesstimate", by rule it must be definitive. This most certainly was not.

The BGSU coach asked for the review of the play. Regarding the lines, the best way to describe it is that the full with of the line is considered part of the zone you are in / leaving (the width of the lines plus almost one puck width is considered the current zone of play). So in the case of an offsides call other players can't enter the offensive zone as soon as the puck touches the blue line, it has to completely enter the zone before any other player can be fully across the blue line*. In other words the edge of the blue line closest to the goal is really the determining point for entering the zone. It should be noted that ANY portion of the non-puck carrying player's body in contact with the blue line (dragging a skate behind you for example) allows you to still be considered in the neutral zone and onside EVEN IF YOU ARE AHEAD OF THE PUCK CARRIER OR THE PUCK. Contact must be maintained with the ice however because if the skate is ABOVE the ice in the exact same position the player is now considered to be in the offensive zone and is off sides.

Once the puck is in the O-zone, it must completely cross back into the neutral zone before it is considered to have left the O-zone. In this case the edge of the blue line closest to center ice is the determining point. You'll see this on power plays frequently when a player works across the blueline or tries to hold the puck in the zone. Even if 95% of the puck crosses the blueline back into the neutral zone, if ANY part of the puck is still touching the blueline, the puck is still considered in the O-zone and play remains on side. The same is true for scoring a goal. A goal is not scored until the entire puck completely crosses the backside goal line.

* Actually the player who possesses the puck can completely enter the offensive zone before the puck but I rarely see this allowed with any kind of room for error. In theory you can skate backwards down the ice and your body can enter the zone before the puck. However with most refs if there is anything less than complete control of the puck on the stick, they're going to call you offsides.
