We do take a stand. Ever hear of the Bundy ranch?

What does a deadbeat tax fraud have to do with governing?

Nobody doubts the skill the hard right has with laughably hyperbolic symbolism. The very point of my statement is that's their only skill.

Remember when the knucks said Obama was headed for a favorability less than Dubya's when he left office (29%). Funny story.

I remember a lot of crack analysis saying that an incumbent has to be @ 50% to have his party retain the WH for a 3rd straight term. This was declared when the O was under water. Now that he's hitting the mark I'm sure we'll see a NEW analysis that says, "yeah, but..."

The election is not until 2016, but the opening salvos have been fired. A lot can change in those months.

The election is not until 2016, but the opening salvos have been fired. A lot can change in those months.

I wonder, though. The last several elections have felt like nothing's changed at all throughout the election cycle. We may have reached a plateau where the 48/48 split keeps repeating itself, 2000, 04, 08, 12... again and again, and late breaks may not be possible anymore.

There is a precedent for this. Check out the elections from 1876 forward. Six consecutive elections were decided by less than 5 points, until urban immigration (and William Jennings Bryan being constantly nominated) opened up the Republicans' margin. Obama exceeded 5 points but we've still recently had 4 straight pretty close elections, and we may be locked in until demographics takes its inevitable toll on the GOP.

Plus, the 24 hour news cycle is so appallingly sensationalist that not even a real scandal can cut through the clutter anymore. Inertia seems much harder to overcome now -- we have settled into trench warfare.

Daily Show was awesome last night.

First the second segment was on pollen and it basically proved the existence of global warming in a scientific way that I've never heard before. It was pretty awesome TV.

Second, the interview was with the author of this book and how our government is turning our transportation system into a joke.

Is blackmail a crime?

Regardless - the question of the day. .

If gun-free zones are effective and border fences are ineffective, why is the border of the White House surrounded by a huge fence guarded by lots of Secret Service agents with guns?

Considering just about anybody can get in the White House or fly to it I find your assertion hilarious.

First, blackmail's only a crime if you get caught and someone convicts you.

Second, rules about weapons don't apply to the ruling class.

Third, do as they say, not as they do. ;)

Has someone suggested we build a 2000 mile long fence with white house level personnel coverage? If so, has someone suggested that this wouldn't be effective?

Depends on if the victim threatened Hastert with exposure if he didn't pay up. This whole thing is pretty odd, as $3.5M and counting is a lot of dough for a payoff. This leads to the question of 1) where does Hastert get all of this money as he wasn't rich when he got to Congress, and 2) what exactly does this person have on him?

Strom Thurmond supported his black illegitimate daughter somewhat throughout his life, but I've never heard that she blackmailed (no pun intended) him into it. Only Hastert can speak to his motivations, but if this is true he's going to go down in history and not in a good way.

Today in Republicanism:

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-...ay-gambit-goes-horribly-awry?CID=sm_fb_maddow

Rev. Franklin Graham is calling for a boycott of gay-friendly businesses, beginning by pulling his ministry’s accounts from Wells Fargo after the bank ran an ad featuring a gay couple.

Graham, son of the famed evangelical pastor Billy Graham, runs the church his father started, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, which had net assets of $295 million in 2014, according to the most recent data available on the ministry’s website.

Right Wing Watch explained that the evangelical pastor is moving his ministry’s accounts to BB&T, another North Carolina-based bank. Oops.

Graham may not have done much research, as BB&T has received an 80 percent score in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index and this year is the sponsor of the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade, along with the chief sponsor of Miami Beach Gay Pride’s “Legacy Couples” program, which celebrates same-sex couples in “committed relationships of 10 years or longer.”

A bank spokesman said the company hopes to “support the individuals and organizations that broaden our perspectives and strengthen the diverse fabric of our communities. That’s why BB&T is proud to be a part of this day of pride and celebration of the 2015 Legacy Couples.”

In fact, BB&T hosted a same-sex couple’s wedding reception earlier this year “in a makeshift chapel at event sponsor BB&T Bank South Beach branch.

I swear these people are brain dead.

He's not going to find a bank that can handle $295MM in deposits that supports his views. He'd have to find a small community bank that has only a branch or three if he wants one that's not gay friendly. Even then he'll have to pay close attention. Simply put, he's out of options.

ETA: Excuse me, he has $295MM in assets, which would likely give his org around $10-15MM in deposits. My point still stands.
