Re: 2nd Term Part VIII - The Thin Red Line

President Obama walked into the bank to cash a check.

As he approached the cashier he said, "Good morning Ma'am, could you
please cash this check for me?"

Cashier: "It would be my pleasure sir. Would you please show me your
ID?"

Obama: "Truthfully, I did not bring my ID with me as I didn't think
there was any need to. I am Barack Obama, the President of the United
States of AMERICA!!!!"

Cashier: "Yes sir, I know who you are, but with all the regulations and
monitoring of the banks because of impostors and forgers and
requirements of the Dodd-Frank legislation, etc., I must insist on
seeing your ID.

Obama: "Just ask anyone here at the bank who I am and they will tell
you. Everybody knows who I am."

Cashier: "I am sorry Mr. President but these are the bank rules and I
must follow them."

Obama: "I order you to cash this check!"

Cashier: "Look Mr. President, here is an example of what we can do.
One day, Tiger Woods came into the bank without ID. To prove he was
Tiger Woods he pulled out his putter and made a beautiful shot across
the bank into a cup. With that shot we knew him to be Tiger Woods and
cashed his check.

Another time, Andre Agassi came in without ID. He pulled out his tennis
racquet and made a fabulous shot whereas the tennis ball landed in my
cup. With that shot we cashed his check. So, Mr. President, what can
you do to prove that it is you, and only you, as the President of the
United States?"

Obama: Stands there thinking, and thinking, and finally says, "Honestly,
I can't think of a single thing. I don't have a clue what to do."

Cashier: "Will that be large or small bills, Mr. President?"

Whats even funnier is you couldn't let a joke about Obama slide without posting something about Bush, thats truly hilarious

You could put just about any president's name in there. It would have been just as lame if it was aimed at Reagan, Clinton or Carter.

The joke is so generic I'm sure it was originally written about some other president. Plus it's got the tedious quality of all those things that are constantly cycled between old people using AOL.

Under Bush II they would have said Sarbanes-Oxley, under Bush I or Clinton the Keating Five or Silverado...

Re: 2nd Term Part VIII - The Thin Red Line

I think these are contradictory statements. The base of the GOP is extreme. They are "the base" precisely because they can be counted on to turn out no matter what, because they're so far right the GOP nominee would be by definition incapable of offending them.

Mainstream conservatism is nowhere near as nutty as the anti-woman, anti-black numbnuts who make these statements. They probably are as pro-Jesus, pro-gun, anti-gay and anti-Mexican as the base, though.

I'm judging this anecdotally from my conservative co-workers, who lap up the RNC talking points but are very uncomfortable when the crazies start speaking their minds about blacks and women. These are people who have worked enough with accomplished black and woman co-workers and bosses that they're no longer ignorant about them.

Kep you're thinking of mainstream conservatism 30 years ago. Its dead. Let it go. All people need to recognize that whether they're liberals, cons, or moderates. King, Bachmann, Goehmert (sp?), etc - this is modern conservative thought. Most people to the left of that have already ditched the party which is why the GOP is at record low registration levels and record low popularity.

When Bush I and Dole depart the scene they'll be the last of their species, and both of these men are like 90 years old (about the age of Pio, walrus, Fishy, etc ;)). That shows you how long conservatism and the GOP has been taken over by kooks. When Rand Paul wins the nomination in 2016, it'll be the fitting bookend to a complete takeover by nutjobs.

When Rand Paul wins the nomination in 2016, it'll be the fitting bookend to a complete takeover by nutjobs.

If Paul were to win, that would rehabilitate conservatism in my eyes. The libertarian message is facile and callous, but it isn't insane. There's a reason most intelligent males go through a libertarian phase in their teens -- it seems to hang together and it seems just. Once you enter the real world, have a family, and start observing people as more than dots on a scatter plot the inanities of libertarianism become obvious, but when your life experience consists of math, science fiction, and a smattering of superficial social psychology, it looks like the most efficient solution to an engineering problem.

If only all conservatism were that benign. The virtues of the libertarian mindset, as distinct from the more malevolent brands of conservative thought, are: it leaves racism, sexism, and homophobia behind; it attempts to follow a "first, do no harm" principle (in reality it is lethal, but the people who follow it can't know that yet, they're too sheltered -- they're not monsters, they're just naive); it is an honest attempt to adhere to America's best instincts about the inherent equality of everyone.

Yes, it is irreparably infected by big money interests as well as a gender skew that ought to give pause to even its greatest adherents. Yes, it is yet another Utopian solution, which the world has had about enough of after the failure of the other Great Schemes. And yes, it in incredibly uncaring in the face of real world suffering, out of condescending True Believer bluster that the "great leap forward" always involves great pain (though, conveniently, not to them). But compared to the Neocons and the Theocons, it is the least poisonous form of current conservatism.

Yup, there is no hangup for any President comparable to people who are hung up on the latest Bush presidency. They'll be on their death bed and their last words will be blaming Bush for something. It's like there's a "whine about Bush" gene or something.

It's so unfair and so undeserved. Why aren't people good like they were back in the day?

From Dilbert:

Wally: The new guy is a huge weasel. Don't believe anything he says.

Pointy Haired Boss: You say that about everybody so they have no credibility when they complain about you.

Wally: I'll stop doing that when it stops working.

Now, picture yourself as the pointy haired boss and us libs as Wally! ;) We'll stop bringing up Bush when it stops working, which should be about 2040 give or take a few years. :D

It will never cease to amaze me how bad his Presidency was and how little he gets credit for it. Just remember you were around when EVERYONE BLAMED CLINTON for everything while Bush was President. Or, have you forgotten?

For a guy who Bob claims he never liked, he sure does spend a lot of time out here defending George W Bush! :D

The thing that amazes me most about how wildly this sentence misses the point is that it indicates that you honestly do not realize how damaging the Dubya presidency was to our country. From every possible aspect -- economic, military, moral -- his administration was our worst in a century, possibly even the worst since the Civil War, which given the late 19th century is a low bar. But just because he has an (R) after his name you will not only never accept that, but never even know it.

Yep, and it never ceases to amaze me how the man gets a free pass. History will not be kind to him and I hope I live long enough to see it.

Oh, I don't think he's getting a free pass. Look how the rest of the GOP treated him as if he didn't exist the last 6 years. Jeb, who otherwise would be one of the top couple contenders for the nomination, will have to fight those associations even to gain traction in his own party.

Except for some hangers on buried deep in the GOP belly fat, Dubya is already written off by anybody who lived through that disaster. History will judge him as a bad president with bad ideas who executed them badly.
