2026 Winter Olympics: Thread Title Under Construction

Oh yeah because every other country was a paragon of true amateurism.

I am absolutely willing to put us down there with East Germany and the Red Army. I don't root for them either.

I have rooted for US teams when they had Cornellians. School > ethnicity > nationality. And I'll always root for um but um tends to be Dutch, Estonian, Irish, or French. I'll even root for Masshole um, with the sound off.

Murphy follows Dump on IG, but doesn’t post anything that outs her from what I’ve heard.

That's not possible. Life is never that on the nose.

I would be willing to believe there are Russian men's figure skaters who are rabidly homophobic because Putin looms over everything and he is MAGAt with less drool.

I wasn’t just referring to the East Bloc shenanigans. Everyone was doing that bullshit in the 60’s and 70’s. Lasse Viren was a police officer? Toni Kukoc was an “amateur” basketball player who made more money playing in Italy than he did in his initial NBA contract. Likewise all those “amateur” hockey players from Sweden who were somehow full time hockey players.

The US didn’t do anything except make the rest of the world play on even terms.

Edit: I’d suggest reading up on people like Frank Shorter who really advocated against the bullshit “amateur” rules in the 70’s.

Shorter was a relentless self-promoter -- hardly a great source.

I know everybody cheated. We cheated just as much back then too -- our protestations of innocence were risible. Maybe the better solution was just to age limit the Olympics. Make the Village even more fun.

The transformation of a festival of white colonialist classism into a tawdry jingoist-consumerist dumpster fire is probably not worth crying about either way TBH. I withdraw the objection -- the old mendacity was just as repellent as the new vacuity.

Actually the AAU did far more to hold things back in the US than other countries. There’s a reason why Congress essentially killed it with the Amateur Sports Act.

You know why - because plinking paper targets with an Anschutz .22LR just doesn't have quite the same pelvic feeling as waving your .44 Mag or M4 lookalike around.
It is funny once you realize the lack of common sense of the average newscaster. I’ve been pruning fruit trees and weening cattle the last few days, and realized, “Oh, these people wouldn’t know what I’m doing if I educated them for 4 weeks.” I could say the same about a rifle.

And then it’s always funny once you get people on here pretending they have ANY idea what that’s all about. Ummmm, no, you don’t. That goes for the shooting thing as well.

You are a really weird person. Not in a good way.

Did anyone catch the Ski Mountaineering races? Those are pretty fun. Ski uphill- that Norwegian would do well at this, take skis off- climb a little, put back on- go up more- take friction material off skis, and ski a moderate slalom back down.

Pretty cool race- that downhill is tough, as your legs have to be rubber by the time you reach the top, AND the skis lean more toward XC skis than downhill- so they are flexy. The sprint race is pretty short- done in a few min. Wonder what the non sprint will be.

The skis are basically modified telemarks. The heel can be freed for skinning up, then locked down for skiing down the traditional way. 20 years ago, this gear was hard to find or you basically had to ski telemark turns down. Now that every weekend warrior in the Rockies in doing it, the gear has become specialized and easier to find.

Oh yes, any substantial downhill on Nordic-style skis with no metal core to deaden the chatter when you turn is an exercise in controlling both speed and balance. Now, throw legs full of lactic acid into that.
