2026 Winter Olympics: Thread Title Under Construction

I think it’s a case where both calls were “technically correct”. Now it’s just a matter of seeing whether these standards will be consistently applied.

Although, I didn’t see an angle that conclusively demonstrated that the one play was offside.

you have all these US defensemen who are supremely mobile and fleet on their feet. and then there's Noah Hanifin.

for god sakes, where is Sanderson??? Lacombe would be better christ.
Are you crazy? We can't possibly win the gold with the best players available!?!?!!! We need some glue guys, with grit and favoritism.

(I hate this roster and low key hope it is a disaster.)

Between who and who else? Do you seriously expect the US team to get questionable calls in their favor? I very much don't.

Haven't some of this team come out in favor of the guy alienating the USA from the rest of the world? You know, the country who's VP was booed at the opening ceremony.

I mean, I’d wager most of the players in the NHL are at least Dump adjacent. Yes, even the foreign ones. Don’t hear of them speaking out much. Plenty of Canadians, Finns, Latvians etc. took that trip to the White House with the Panthers.

Yeah, as much as I don’t like the Tkafuck brothers there are players on Team USA I’d like to see win (like McAvoy).

Auston Matthews winning a gold medal would be fun for Toronto media meltdown alone.

I’d love to assume Hellebuyck isn’t derp due to his mother being a children’s book author and his advocacy for people with mental illnesses, but I’ve been surprised before.

At least some players are not so open about it, if they are. It would be hard to be a teammate with someone that wants people to suffer for the sake of it.

Most of the guys who make the NHL grew up as the best guy on their teams, being told how great and special they are for excelling in a sport that’s not accessible to most poor families. I would be surprised if more than 7 players on the team, and the NHL as a whole weren’t MAGA-friendly. They would need some very special parents to make those guys reflect on the struggles faced by world at large.

The game of the rich is getting worse- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y1moFmYKu4

Although, huge props to Minnesota for keeping hockey public. You guys are going to rule all of hockey in short order.

And there's no way that the people who have way more money than they could ever use in 5 lifetimes will ever give up their hoarding of resources in this country if we compare the US to Norway.

It's interesting to watch the speed skating events and translate them to T&F. The 10k speed skating is in the same time ballpark as the running 5k. Meaning that the relative effort is roughly the same- it's about how much energy can you put out over 12:30. The big difference between running and skating is pack running vs, it being a time trial. So T&F can kind of spread out the effort based on the pace of everyone around them.

But to translate that to the amateur- I don't think it's that important. If I skated a 10k, I bet I would take similar time as a 5k run. And I remember how hard it was training for 5k relative to 10k relative to half marathon (I broke in marathon training, so....)

And I get a good idea how the athletes are feeling when they are trying to gut out that finish, especially that they know how to push themselves harder than me (so not only are they in better shape and faster, they can push farther). Still, knowing how hard a 5k in my lungs.... That's a 10k speed skate is tough.

I do the inline skating marathon in Duluth every year. You're not far off that skating is roughly twice as fast as running. The male winners finish in around an hour, though the course record is around 50 minutes thanks to a decent tailwind that year.

I tend to finish around 1:45 (my PR is 1:37), which is about 50th percentile for the men, and would translate to a 3:30 running marathon time.
