2026 Elections: To the Midterms and Beyond!

Not to mention Jhina already backfilled quite a bit of what USAid was doing, so that might very well be a permanent loss.

I'm going to make a bold prediction that no matter what her biggest supporters think, AOC '28 is a pipe dream. I don't think she will even run (yet).

I would look at someone like Ossoff for '28. He's the right age while still having youthful energy and won big in a state that until recently was solid red. He is a great speaker and fits the mold of who the Dems should run at this time.
I do not believe any serious person believes AOC should or will run in 2028. Any pundit writing that is fishing for eyeballs.

Ossoff or Ossoff-adjacent is the way to go in 2028. White, male, youthful, energetic, center-left, and honest.

It would be ironic if we responded to our Dump-repudiation 2026 tsunami the way we responded to our Watergate-repudiation 1974 tsunami: a centrist from Georgia with a reputation for scrupulous honesty. We blew it in 1974 and got Reagan just 6 years later.

Ossoff is a good choice, but let's not do that again, mm 'kay? I want a Dem who will play hardball. Dump gave us an authoritarian presidency that can do anything. Let's disassemble it after we force through everything we have wanted the last 75 years.

If you elect me in 2028, I'll use every trick in the book to entrench our Fully Automated Gay Space Communist Utopia so deeply it cannot be uprooted for at least 50 years. I will keep notes, and then on Inauguration Day 2037 I'll turn all my records over to the DOJ and volunteer to go to jail and/or the chair for everything I did. We get our utopia and I accept accountability and set the precedent sic semper tyrannis. Deal?

Who is saying that? unofan is saying the exact opposite - that Democrats in those red states and red seats must be allowed to break with the party - and a lot of us are agreeing with him. I never hated Susan Collins because she lied about being bipartisan- I hated her because she was so good at faking it for her voters.

As for AES, he’s further left than Stevens. We’ll take it. Flanagan too. Among others. This was the time and place for candidates like them.
But said with a tone of negativity ... "vote blue when it matters and let them be "independent" when it doesn't" is hardly an endorsement of acknowledging this. (And then telling me to fuck off and calling me a moron when i pointed out that they will need to govern and advocate for their states as the centrists they ran as if they want to get re-elected - not just break away from the party when it doesn't matter).

And, I'm not sure your age or if you were around for it - but there was a time when Collins (and the other senator Olympia Snow) were for sure pretty bi-partisan. I agree that faded for Collins in recent years.

Missed among the excitement over AES and other significant D wins, the Dems also flipped MI-10 - John James' former district - which includes the southern (and most populous) part of Macomb County. Macomb is generally R+ 8-10 in most years, and the Republicans had nominated the son of popular Macomb County Sheriff Mike Bouchard to contest the seat, so for the kid to lose by 7 points has got to be a pretty big blow for Republicans.

In other words, AOC and Bernie are centrists. Medicare for all is a centrist view. I haven't heard them say anything that is "Extreme" left.
When you hear Medicare for all talked about from a maga rally by the people there, universal healthcare has become centrist and mainstream. A long way from when actor Regan called Medicare that was implemented communism.

In Alaska, the Division of Elections decided to change tactics this year are releasing the numbers for the counted votes ranked choices. Which sounds good right? Yay more data.

Except it’s created this false narrative of “Sullivan is going to win with the RCV tabulation!”. It’s false because there’s still around 60k votes left to count and most of those are expected to go to Peltola. It’s precisely why they weren’t released in the past. Unsurprisingly, the Republican led DoE is trying to create a false narrative.

For information purposes, the big drop of vote count is expected on the 10th. That’s usually when the DoE counts a good chunk of absentee ballots. Plus there’s still the ballots from the last weekend of early voting before Election Day.

Per AP, 33 House races yet to call, many with 99% reporting. Dems ahead in 13, GOP ahead in 20. If it stays like that, Congress will end up at 264-171 seats.

Dang.

That's a beatdown!

(Oops - as I typed that, one of the D leaders turned into a winner, so D's now have 252 wins + 12 leads)

I'll go on the record:

House: 235-210 D (net of 11 more flips for D than for R)
Senate 51-49 D (Dems flip 4 out of TX, OH, ME. AK, and IA)

If not now, with a crappy economy, a new forever war, and a historically unpopular president, then the Democrats should just close up shop.
So happy to have been so wrong. Never in my wildest dreams.... (but I did call 4 flips - and may get all 5)

I think if you had told any of us a week ago, let alone a month or even year ago, that the GOP would be fighting over votes in Mississippi and Alaska we’d think you’re crazy.

dunlap just conceded to lepage
Was just watching a piece on CNN saying part of why Jared Golden stepped down is because of how uncomfortable far left/DSA activists made his and his family’s life over his support of Israel.

Any idea if there is truth to that? If so, I sure hope they like Paul LePage.

Breaking things down to a social level, given the results, I have to wonder how awkward some of the conversations in MAGA households will be on Turkey Day.

MAGA's have to know that they likely know people who flipped. Does the cult ostracize them further or is empathy shown?
