2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

I'll repost this here in the 2024-25 Penn State thread:

Junior forward Lexi Bedier has entered the transfer portal - that's a bit of a surprise, to say the least.

I'm sure someone will pick her up based on the success of other transfers out of Penn State.

In Bedier's pre-college interviews, all she talked about was Ohio State, never any other school, so it was surprising that she even came to Penn State to begin with. Still, and maybe I'm too old school, I don't understand how jumping ship to take a chance at winning a national tournament one time, with teammates you don't even know, can look better than finishing your fourth year with the teammates you've bonded with. I know the landscape has changed with the transfer portal, but...ugh.

In the event of her leaving for OSU, I hope she has weighed up the pros and cons of such a decision. It's true that she'll have the opportunity to win a championship, but what role will she play on such a talented team? I agree with ZedLeppelin. With the Nittany Lions, she was one of the leaders and seemed to be appreciated by her teammates.

The pickings are slim compared to last year, but I’m guessing Muzzy is aiming higher than 7 goals in a 3 year career.

That's right! Interest is not always mutual. Muzzi is spoilt for choice! Most of the top prospects who gonna play for the USA and Canadian U18 national teams dream of playing for OSU.

That's what I thought, too - Muzerall took a pass on her three years ago for a reason. Bedier didn't light up the stats at Penn State, but her game has definitely improved since she was a freshman. Still, she's not Ohio State caliber, unless Muzerall has needs for a role player next season or something. Who knows? She better get picked up, though, because I'm betting her Penn State scholarship is over now.

If I remember correctly, OSU did not honor any of their verbal commitments to high school seniors that year, which was unheard of at the time, of course the counter would be that the times were unprecedented. So I would not read into that to much. I would not think she would be a glutton for punishment, so I doubt it is even a blip on her radar

No one said she was going to OSU, it's completely conjecture on someone's part.

The best of luck to her.

Doesn't really belong here, but there isn't a Delaware thread, and I'm too lazy to look for a CHA thread:
https://bluehens.com/news/2024/3/26/...key-head-coach

I am both happy for Allison to get an opportunity to be head coach and sad for Penn State. Former assistant/associate head coaches who have worked with Kampersal and are now head coaches: Cara Morey (Princeton), Celeste Brown (RIT), Lee-J Mirasolo (Stonehill) and Allison Coomey (Delaware). I am looking forward to Delaware joining the CHA!

congrats to Coomey! Bittersweet for Penn State.
I noticed in the Ohio State celebration pictures that there are some people wearing Blue Hens jerseys in the crowd. Kind of cool foreshadowing for NCAA women’s hockey future.

I hope that Bothun can get healthy enough to make a difference for Bemiji. Coomey's press release by Delaware was impressive. Id have to guess that Kampersal has some money he didn't expect to have to entice a couple of transfers. Would Boucher jump in division? That's a name that is jumping out to at least me.

Looking ahead to 2024-25, Penn State loses forwards Julie Gough, Maeve Connolly, and Carrie Byrnes, defenders Alva Johnsson and Maggie MacEachern, and goalie Josie Bothun. Three forwards, two defenders, and a goalie. Also, if forward Lexi Bedier doesn't get her transfer out, we'll see if she gets put in the dog house next season for unsuccessfully trying to bail.

Incoming for next season are two forwards (Abby Stonehouse and Grace Outwater) and two defenders (Taya Macdonald and Grace Tullock). On paper, it looks like holes are mostly plugged for next season, minus a forward, but the transfer portal has plenty of forwards available, too. Jeff Kampersal isn't against grabbing transfers, so we'll see if he finds anyone he likes.

Katie DeSa looked very solid in net after Josie Bothun went out with an injury, and Annie Spring is returning, too, so Penn State is good in net. The following year, two more goalies are coming (Lauren Hernick and Madison Campbell), so Penn State won't be short on goalies anytime soon.

Overall, Penn State doesn't really have any huge gaps to fill on the roster, so it isn't a scary off-season this summer.

Thank you for the updates. News is scarce up in very upstate New York on the Lady Lions... I'm glad in this day and age they haven't lost a whole lot to the portal.

Lexi Bedier made a "Thank you Penn State" post on Instagram shortly after she entered the portal -- based on some of the comments to that post, I think she's going to play somewhere in Canada (U Sports.) I agree that Penn State is in pretty good shape for next year but we could use a third goalie and 1-2 more forwards.

In other off-season Penn State Women's hockey news: Coach Kampersal now has his own namesake shake at the local restaurant, "The Field": https://www.facebook.com/reel/268543849663910

Going back to Play in Canada is not unheard of as a girl from UNH, Talli Warren, with eligibility for her fourth year did the same thing a couple of years ago. College is much more affordable in Canada. Katie Rankin from PSU also played another year of hockey in Canada.

There are lots of girls out there in the portal, but it takes two to tango.

Two Nittany award winners - Julie Gough - Ms Penn State and Carrie Byrnes gets the True Grit. Awesome for both young ladies.
