2022 World Juniors

1) Canada's in Edmonton.
2) Better than shutting *everything* down.

1. Nobody is making any money on this tournament, not even TSN and Hockey Canada. Attendance is already limited to half capacity and the first Canada game only had 4500 people in attendance. On Boxing Day. In Edmonton.

2. Pizzing off three of the Big Six, two of which are important commercial markets, is not a great idea for the IIHF. Doubly so if doing so just hands a tournament win to Canada.

Are either Sweden or the Russians an important commercial market for the IIHF?

But you're right, if there's not enough $$$ on the line they'll probably welcome a reason to kill it.

On the positive side, there isn’t relegation again this year, so even if Covid spreads and the team has to forfeit the rest of the way they won’t end up in Division I next year. If it is the goalies, not sure how the US continues the tournament given likely quarantine protocols for any roster updates, if they’re allowed at this point.

It looks like the women’s senior teams were supposed to play a couple games that coincide with the WJC in Edmonton and Red Deer? Both of those have been canceled due to positives on the Canadian side.

Always fun finding out about stuff after the s- hits the fan:

Apparently teams are staying at a hotel mixed in with the general public. No mini bubble or anything, just a normal hotel.

So essentially this tournament is going to be completely useless. Decided by who gets sick and who doesn't. Brilliant IIHF...

Ahem.

One player (one!) on Czechia tested positive and the whole team gets thrown into quarantine and they have to forfeit a game.

What a fucking joke of a tournament.

Also, it’s still up in the air whether the USA-Sweden game will be played. They’re still waiting on test results.

Seems to me that they didn't plan very well considering the pandemic. The NHL stupidly got rid of the taxi squads they had last year and now they're bringing them back. Too many morons thought this shit was over with too soon.

It is ridiculous that they have both these extremely stringent protocols and no measures to isolate them prior to a positive test. Baffling.

The IIHF and Hockey Canada fucked this one up real good. They forced all the teams to show up early so they could follow the mandatory quarantine, forced these rules where if one player tested positive then the whole team would have to quarantine and then didn’t isolate the teams and officials or leave openings in the schedule so teams could easily get sick and have to forfeit games.

But hey! TSN is getting their content and Canada keeps playing so who cares?!?
